Wind is the defining feature at White Mountain Road, a BLM dispersed area sitting atop a plateau above Green River, Wyoming. Reviewers mention it consistently, and not casually. As Kate G. puts it, "the wind beat the camper up all night." There is no tree cover up here, no windbreak of any kind, so campers who are sensitive to overnight gusts should factor that in before committing to a stay. What the exposure does provide, on the other side of that tradeoff, is an open sightline across a wide valley with the town and interstate visible far below.
The road in from the east is manageable for most rigs, though bumpy in sections. Big rigs up to 60 feet have made the trip, and a 33-foot travel trailer can reportedly reach six to eight spots without difficulty. One important warning: GPS routing from the east can send drivers onto a dirt road with a 27% grade. Stick to the main approach and verify your route before heading up. There is no signage at the camping area itself. Stone fire rings mark the spots.
Cell service is reliable. Multiple reviewers with T-Mobile and AT&T report three to four bars throughout the stay, which makes this a workable overnight stop for campers who need connectivity. ATVs and side-by-sides can be ridden directly from camp, with access to a large network of trails in the area. Campers have reported seeing wild horses nearby. White Mountain Road BLM Dispersed near Kanda sits just over a mile east for those who want to explore adjacent dispersed options along the same corridor.
The area is very dry, and at least one fire was reported in the vicinity shortly after a group departed. Use established fire rings and check current fire restrictions before building a campfire. Trash and broken glass have been noted at some spots, so a walk-around before setting up is worth the time. Wilkins Peak BLM Dispersed near Green River and the Green River Flaming Gorge Dispersed Site are nearby alternatives if this area is full or conditions are unfavorable. Bring extra stakes and guy lines if you're in a tent or a lighter trailer, and expect the wind to pick up after dark.
