    Emerald Forest Cabins & RV

    Redwood Pleasantries

This is a very lovely campground clean of trash with quaint with cabins and campsites tucked between redwoods and Douglas fir trees. Campground looks lush and loved.

They offer cabins, RV and tent sites.

Additionally there is a Video Arcade, Horseshoe pit, dog park, celebration hall with board games/puzzles, a mini mart, playground, gazebo, and multiple bath/shower houses and laundry facilities.

They periodically have special events during the weekends. We lucked out with live music and wine tastings.

Incredibly close to town but still immersed in the woods.

Only negative is that it’s close to 101 and car traffic can be heard at times. However, there are many song birds around camp to make your stay pleasant.

    Highly recommend!

Giant Redwoods RV & Cabin Destination

    Quiet Redwoods Getaway

This is a beautiful campground in Meyer’s Flat, CA. The area of Myers Flat is a little “sketchy” but the campground is very well kept and they close the gates at night which is nice. There are nice little cabins on site as well as RV sites. We stayed for 3 nights and it was very enjoyable. Driving and biking along Avenue of the Giants was the highlight of this area! There is a little dog park, volleyball court, playground, swimming area. (we didn’t swim due to the algae warning for northern CA) It’s along Eel River. There’s also a great market and coffee shop nearby that we took advantage of! (pricey but the only place around) The staff is so kind and Vicki was a great help while we made our reservation over the phone. Overall, we would stay again!

    Mattole Campground

Our favorite weekend getaway. Great sunsets.

We camp here as much as possible. Just good ol' pit toilets, but usually not crowded, and very quiet. As Humboldt locals, we like to be away from the crowds, in the most beautiful natural areas in California. This is the trail head to the famous Lost Coast Trail, and just a stunning beach campground. Dogs allowed on leash, pop your tent in the sand. Super nice.

No big stores nearby, so you should probably get groceries in Eureka or Fortuna before heading over the hill to Petrolia. There is a small store, but this is Humboldt so they could be closed at any given point, wouldn't depend on it.

Be careful in the summer, not really sandal appropriate. The native dune plants have lots of little prickers in the sand among the campsites.

Make sure to stroll along the beach north to where the Mattole river flows into the Pacific. You will almost always find a bunch of seals hanging out on the other side of the river spit and hunting in the estuary for fist.

    Benbow KOA & Golf Course

    Okay

It’s a ok place to stay. There are a lot of cats on property which got our dog riled up. Good location to see area attractions. Hookups we’re good. Seems like a lot of extended guests in cabins. If we stay again we’ll get a pull through site rather than back in. It didn’t help that we had a family with 2 ATVs staying in a cabin right by us and they’re kids (guessing ages 10-14) would drive around the camp for hours at a time. First time I’ve seen that at a koa.

Van Duzen County Park - Pamplin Grove

    Best place to camp!

Incredible views, quiet, easy river access, pet and kid friendly, showers, on site friendly hosts, and the best trails through old growth that you rarely get in a campground. It’s a magical place, and affordable. Worth sacrificing the cell signal, there’s a pay phone in the entry lot. I’ve been twice now, and can’t wait to go back.

    Riverwalk RV Park

    Great for Glamping

We live in Fortuna, had just bought our first rv trailer, and needed to practice "camping" before heading out on the road to get used to hooking up, and all the other tricks that come with a 25' trailer. We stayed across town at the Riverwalk RV Park, and had a fun time. Its definitely the opposite of roughing it, and only had a picnic table at our site - no outdoor fires, but all in all was a great experience with friendly staff, a pool (special rules to use during Covid), and it looked like some other fun things on the other side of the park that we didn't have time to explore. The Eel River is close by, with a lovely walking path alongside. We arrived after the office closed and all our paperwork was ready and waiting in the outside late-arrival box. I would definitely recommend this park to anyone needing a quiet, safe, overnight stay, or for folks that like a little more of the glamping style camping.

    Riverwalk RV Park

    Great little place

Friendly staff, clean bathrooms and free showers, outdoor cook kitchen near the tent sites and cabins.

We come to fortuna every year for a Martial arts tournament. This will be our regular place from now on.

Burlington Campground — Humboldt Redwoods State Park

    Quiet, peaceful, beautiful

There's nothing quite as special as camping amongst giants. Spots are spaced out and plenty big for rigs (24' for us). There are easy trails across the Avenue of the Giants, longer hikes in the area, and visitor info next door. Unfortunately, the closet town is Fortuna about half an hour away. It is a beautiful drive, though, and camping here is a must for anyone.

Guide to Fortuna

Fortuna offers convenient access to several campgrounds in Humboldt County, ranging from coastal locations to sites nestled among ancient redwoods. The area sits at the junction of the Eel River and Van Duzen River watersheds, creating diverse camping environments. Summer temperatures typically range from 50-75°F with cooler nights, while winter camping requires preparation for rainfall averaging 40 inches annually.

What to do

River swimming access: At Van Duzen County Park, known locally as Swimmers Delight, campers can enjoy clean, refreshing water activities. "The river is clean, and relaxing. Swimming here is so fun! Cold, but refreshing!" reports Andi M. The swimming areas are accessible via short trails from most campsites.

Redwood hiking: Humboldt Redwoods State Park offers multiple hiking options through ancient forests. "Plenty of hiking super close to the campground. We visited in Winter and had nearly the entire place to ourselves," notes Dani P. Rangers at the visitor center provide trail maps highlighting routes suitable for all skill levels.

Beach exploration: From Samoa Boat Ramp County Park, campers can access coastal areas. "Driving right up to the beach and water is something I didn't know I NEEDED to do," says Taylor. The beach areas provide opportunities for wildlife viewing and shell collecting along the shoreline.

What campers like

Shade coverage: The redwood canopy at Burlington Campground provides natural temperature regulation. "The entire campground is ALWAYS in the shade because of the tree density," notes Taryn S. This shade coverage keeps sites cool even during warmer summer days.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms at many locations. At Albee Creek Campground, "Great clean facilities. Coin operated showers. Clean. Quiet because its small," reports Marcus K. Most campgrounds offer shower facilities, though availability may be seasonal.

Wildlife viewing: Morning and evening animal sightings enhance the camping experience. "It's not uncommon to stroll the meadow early morning or in the evening and see the Black Bears up the fruit trees munching away on apples and the Deer eating what the bear drop," shares Tony G. about Albee Creek. Campers should maintain appropriate food storage in provided bear boxes.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Most campgrounds near Fortuna have minimal or no cell service. At Van Duzen County Park, one camper noted it has "no cell coverage (Verizon), and about a 35-45 minute drive from Eureka and about 15 from the nearest gas station." Plan communications accordingly.

Reservation timing: Popular sites fill quickly during peak season. "Get there early or make reservations in advance. This place fills up fast! I had to stay in the overflow," advises Ann N. about Albee Creek Campground. Most state park campgrounds accept reservations through Reserve California.

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds involves narrow, winding roads. The highway to Grizzly Creek Redwoods "is very curvy with lots of narrow areas and very few turn offs," cautions Stephanie. Larger RVs and trailers should research access routes before arrival.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming spots: Swimmers Delight at Van Duzen Park offers safe water access for children. "This is another one of my favorite campgrounds. It is open year round and only cost 25 dollars with clean bathrooms and showers. There are many great campgrounds, many right on the river," writes William M. The gradual entry points make it suitable for younger children.

Wildlife education: Humboldt County Fairgrounds serves as a good base for exploring regional nature areas. "Close to Ferndale, which is Must See. Short drive into Eureka," notes one reviewer. The fairgrounds location provides easy access to several wildlife viewing areas.

Pet friendly options: Several campgrounds accommodate family pets with specific amenities. "Safe and quiet. We were there at first with just a couple rvs there. By the end of the four days - it was filling up and was still quiet," reports Jerilyn M. about the fairgrounds, which offers level sites and space for pets.

Tips from RVers

Site limitations: Many campgrounds have restrictions on RV size and limited hookups. "Not suited for most RVs and travel trailers, you need to be very small and fully self contained. Our 19' A-Line barely fit into our spot," cautions Stephanie about Grizzly Creek Redwoods.

Fairground alternatives: When traditional campgrounds are full, consider the fairgrounds. "Super quiet on a Monday only 3 other RV's there. Walked around Ferndale and had great Mexican food," shares Maureen F. The fairgrounds offer larger sites suitable for bigger rigs.

Water quality considerations: Some locations have mineral-rich water that affects equipment. At Stafford RV Park, "the water jug we had filled with their water was full of rusty red residue at the bottom," notes Laura M. Using water filters and bringing drinking water is advisable for some locations.
