2S2 Yellowstone National Park Backcountry is located in a region characterized by forested areas and rugged terrain. Temperatures can range from lows of 20°F in winter to highs of 80°F in summer. Nearby, visitors can explore the geothermal features of Yellowstone National Park, including geysers and hot springs.

Beyond the developed areas, Yellowstone offers a diverse, mountainous landscape that invites exploration by foot, pack stock, and boat. Hundreds of miles of trails facilitate travel throughout the park. Permits are required for all overnight stays.

When planning a backcountry trip, remember that many of Yellowstone’s trails are more than 7,000 feet above sea level. Most areas retain snow until late May or early June, and some (especially mountain passes) are snow-covered until late July. Also, many routes require fording rivers that can be 25 feet wide, 3 to 5 feet deep, extremely cold, and swiftly running during our late spring runoff.

The Best Camping Near Silver Gate, Montana

Back country site 2S2 sits on the southern edge of the Slough creek valley just south of the main trail.  A brief hike along the access trail gets you to the site.  This site sits in a group of trees which makes for a nice location out of the sun and with some wind protection, but the trade off is limited views of the valley, and the view of the valley are the best part about hiking this part of the park.  Site has an excellent water source right next to the tent and cooking areas.  The site has several good flat locations for your tents.  While the cook/food area has a bear pole for hanging your food you will not need to use it as the camp has a bear locker for food/gear storage.  The bear locker also gives you a great flat cooking area that doesn't require bending over your campstove.  Fires are allowed when not restricted.  Site is limited to 6 people for a max stay of 3 nights.  Don't be surprised to find bison very near your camp as they rang through the valley.
