The Best Camping Near Milton, Wisconsin

It has been quite some time since the last time we visited Blackhawk. They appear to have entered the thousand trail system of membership since our last visit. The campground has plenty of amenities to keep you busy with a beautiful lake you can walk to. They have a boat launch but we did not take our kayaks with us on this trip. We reserved a water/electric site and utilized the dump station on our way out. Lines were not too bad for the dump station which was good. Sites were of decent size and fairly quiet. We did have an evening where we heard what I believe was a race track in the distance but was not able to confirm. This was a quick weekend trip with some additional family members so we did not fully partake in the planned activities as we spent most of our time at camp. We will definitely visit this campground again as we have used the lake in the past and had a great time over all.

Enjoyable weekend with friends

If you want to get run over by hundreds speeding golf carts, camp in an open field that’s mostly flooded and covered in cigarette butts and other garbage, swim in a beach that contains hazardous conditions under the disgusting waters, or stay up until 4am partying as loud as you can with no regard for the hundreds of other campers, this is the campground for you! This campground has been flooded for THREE years, and nothing on their website has been updated. They appear to have a huge, clean, usable beach. When you arrive you’ll see it’s about 1/8th the size with a NO swimming sign because there are literally still trailer parts and electric and sewer hook ups under the water from flooding three years ago that never receded. The field that they park the “weekly” guests in has been flooded so long that a bazillion tadpoles swim in multiple campsites. The dump station has also been flooded for three years so a “poop truck” (as the children called it) drives around all day pumping trailers and leaving a really lovely smell behind. The only reason this place even gets one star is because the people were very friendly. They had an activity director driving around (at a safe speed on a golf cart...) handing out craft bags for all the kids since activities were cancelled due to covid. However there was a mass dance party at the pavillion the same night. So if there was covid, it was spread anyways. I’m sure seasonal guests love this campground because there’s a level of loyalty and nostalgia for people who have been coming here for years, but if you’re planning on a weekend or weekly stay, there are much better and safer options. 

Nope.

This is a fairly massive RV community on the southern edge of Clear Lake. While a small body of water, it’s fairly deep and perfect for some light sailing and excellent for a great day of fishing. The grounds are a mix of being dated and in the midst of being repaired. When I visited, half of what I saw was being renovated, while the other half look like it desperately needed it. There’s 2 key areas here, and both have a combination of RV’ers that have parked their mobile for a long time(just check the decking around some of these mobile living rooms), while there’s a number of open sites that you can book on a daily or weekly basis. There’s all of the typical hook-ups and a number of diversions like horse shoes, basketball, swimming pool, etc. to keep everyone pretty active, especially the kids. While there’s a not a ton around Blackhawk RV Campground, about 10 minutes drive will take you to the nearest town of Milton, which has a handful of restaurants, shops, grocery stores and some cool antique shopping(if that’s your thing). Insider’s tip? Head into town for a nice meal at Millhouse Bar&amp; Grill and then mosey on over to The Hitchin’ Post for a few whisky nightcaps. Happy Camping!

RV Hillside Neighborhood

Great

With almost 500 sites with which to choose from, Blackhawk RV Campground is not only one of the larger RV communities you will come across here in the great Badger State, but since my initial review back in 2021, this camping outpost has made a number of enhancements and modifications. Starting with the name change from Blackhawk RV Campground to simply Blackhawk Camping Resort along with a management change are two big changes, and from what I have gathered, for the better. 

  

Additional remodeling projects that have been completed are the brand new, in-ground heated pool, along with small kiddy pool and adjoining pool house complete with restroom and showers. A new basketball court has been refurbished with new netted hoops as well as new kid’s playgrounds that have been installed on sand lots, which the kiddos are sure to love. Top-of-the-line pioneer cottages have been constructed that feel more like modular homes, but come with all of the amenities you would expect like a complete kitchen with full-sized refrigerator, microwave and stovetop range as well as living room. 

  

The biggest attraction here though hasn’t changed, which is the quick and EZ access to Clear Lake, which is actually a combination of 3 different lakes: Mud Lake, Clear Lake and Duck Lake, which basically surrounds the entirety of Blackhawk Camping Resort and offers up endless fishing, kayaking and boating opportunities. That said, there’s still plenty of ‘no swimming’ signs out for some reason that nobody was able to explain to me, so if a refreshing splash in the water is important to you, I would suggest calling ahead of time and asking management about this impediment. 

  

As far as amenities go, beyond what I have already described above, you’ll also find standard back-in and pull-through site options that offer up waterfront views along with the typical hook-ups being 30 / 50 electric, fire pit and water. You will absolutely want to note that not every site offers up sewage, which is a bummer, and further, some sites offer more premium amenities like concrete patios and picnic tables. Sites also come in either grass or gravel, so be sure to ask when booking. Additional amenities include: horseshoe pits, boat slips, laundr-O-mat, activity center, boat ramp, designated dumpsters, on-site store, fishing dock, dance pavilion and volleyball court. 

  

Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) Once you grow weary of digging through your roto-molded Cordova cooler or on-board mini-fridge, then head on into the nearby hamlet of Milton for some good Midwestern comfort food, where you can find made-from-scratch biscuits &amp; gravy over at Mary’s Café, fresh, hot homemade pies at Paul Revere’s Pizza or for something a bit more upscale, the proper, white tablecloth Frederick’s Supper Club of which I recommend the bacon-wrapped Prime Rib bites followed by the Diablo pasta;(2) If you are looking for a nice, different distraction that you wouldn’t expect in these parts, let alone Wisconsin writ large, head on over to Timber Hill Winery, which is a family-run local vineyard featuring a fairly amazing tasting room offering up some not-so-typical varietals like Red, White &amp; Berry, Cherry Bomb and my favorite, PB&amp;J Back to School; (3) Should you need to stock up on anything while staying at Blackhawk Camping Resort, you’ll also find just about everything you need in nearby Milton where you’ll have Beverage Mart, Dollar General, The Meat Market, Piggly Wiggly as well as Ace Hardware to help keep you supplied up while enjoying the outdoors; and (4) If you’re one of those families that like to track down the oversized and obscure while traversing across this great country, then head just a bit down south of where you are at to Janesville where you can meet Bessie the Cow, which stands 16 feet tall and 20 feet wide – you can easily park at the nearby Arby’s at no cost and just walk over to meet her.
