## Overview

 Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is a complete family destination offering a wide variety of activities and camping options. Standard, tent-only and group camping facilities are perched along Lake Sherwood, the largest lake in the Monongahela National Forest. Swimming beaches, a picnic area, boat ramp and several hiking trails are among the features of the area.
## Recreation

 Anglers seek tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill and largemouth bass. Boating is a big draw as well. Hikers have the option of exploring Lake Sherwood Trail, Upper Meadow Trail, Meadow Mountain Trail and Meadow Creek.
## Natural Features

 At an elevation of 2,600 feet, Lake Sherwood spans 156 acres. The recreation area is part Monongahela National Forest, which comprises about a million acres of forest in West Virginia, and attracts 1.3 million visitors each year. A variety of animals make their home here, including black bear, coyote, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, red and gray fox, bobcat, fisher, otter and mink.

 The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is a 15 minute drive. The West Virginia State Fair, held in August each year, is located 30 minutes away in Lewsiburg, West Virginia.

The Best Camping Near Hot Springs, Virginia

This campground was off the grid and beautiful. We had site #17 but if I stayed again I would prefer site #18. Both sites were VERY spacious, secluded, and right on the lake except 18 had a little bit better view of the lake. The sites were also right near the bathrooms. This campground does not offer electric or water hookup but if you are prepared for that then this campground is a 5 out of 5. They do offer showers, and have a very small store with some essentials like ice as well as kayak and canoe rental but it closes after Labor Day.

The lake was beautiful. There is a great hike around the lake as well as other hikes offered that are accessible in the campground. Make an effort to get up and see the sunrise over the lake - you will not be disappointed at the beauty of the sky and the mist over the lake. Kayaking around the lake was fun, and there are many types of fish in the lake.

The site is pet friendly - we travel with my dog and cat who also enjoyed the spacious, secluded campsite. Jim the camp host was friendly and always around if you had a question. Site offered picnic table, fire pit, and bear hook to hang items out of reach of the black bears. We did not see any but did see deer, rabbits, red squirrels, and other little creatures roaming around. 

Bathrooms offered flushable toilets as well as showers. They were clean but did have lots of daddy long legs to keep you company. Water was hot and had good pressure. It was a push button timed shower but you could keep pressing the button if you were not done yet. 

This is off the grid and does not really have provisions especially after Labor Day. It is a stretch to call it a store but it did have ice, drinks, bait, peanut butter and few other essentials. Again closed after Labor Day. Had no cell service (Verizon) as well. Also not near town - closest was about 45 minutes. As long as you are prepared and bring what you need, this place is a beautiful campsite and made it in my top five favorite campgrounds.

Off the grid - beautiful!

This is a slice of heaven. The campsites are clean and well maintained with nice bathrooms and shower houses. We saw tons of wildlife in the area. The hike around the lake was awesome and all our kiddos loved the island and beach. We can't wait to go back.

This campground is an idyllic setting for a summer vacation

We visited the Pine Run camping Area of Lake Sherwood Campground in July 2016\. We stayed with my sister’s family on sites 48 &amp; 49 and they were perfect pair sites to share. I found our site private and spacious and perfectly distanced from the bathrooms (not too close, not too far). We drove around some of the other camping areas and they all looked great - some people who had sites close to the water brought their own kayaks and such. We just rented a row boat and tooled around with our kids one day one day. Other days we hiked - the trail around the lake is beautiful. There is a really nice beach that the kids enjoyed playing in and a boat rental place that also sells ice and other items. Highly recommend this whole area - we will be back again!

Nice, wooded, spacious campsites

Great campground with many sites right on the lake. A place to swim and kayak. Great hiking trails - we chose the one with multiple water crossings. No hook ups but that’s ok with us. Very out of the way so take everything you need. Beautiful drive there too. 

We loved it 

The campground is butted up against Sherwood lake and a small mtn ridge range that divides West Virginia and Virginia.  Even though I didn't get to go fishing it looked like a very nice lake to fish in.  The campsites themselves are very nice and the majority is right on the lake.  There is very nice facilities for the men and women's bathroom and shower.  You can go on the lake in boat and there is a beach area for swimming.  I really enjoyed the arched wooden bridge that you can walk over to an island and explore.  I highly recommend this Sherwood lake for camping.  Its all around peaceful.  It takes a little bit of driving to get there off the beaten path of nearby White Sulphur Springs but it is definitely worth the drive.

Very peaceful scenic campground.  

Typical NFS campground with a decent spacing between large sites. Watched some deer walk thru a few times they didn’t seem fazed by me or my dog. Being from the northeast I was stoked to find hot FREE showers and a 2pm check out time. The lake is man made but very large and looks like it’s always been there. Rangers were knowledgeable and happy to help with a slow leak in one of my tires. I’d go back if in the area.

We spent Labor Day weekend 2021 enjoying Lake Sherwood when we stayed at the recreation area while visiting friends in nearby Clifton Forge, Virginia. Located beside picturesque Lake Sherwood, this facility features a family-friendly campground as well as fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, swimming, and other outdoor activities.  
  

While the campground was pretty full for the holiday weekend, most campers pulled out on Labor Day so we basically had the campground to ourselves Monday evening and Tuesday morning before we headed home.
