State Park for remote camping

One of three neighboring island parks in Lake Champlain’s “inland sea”(along with Burton Island and Knight Island), Woods Island became Vermont's forty-fifth state park in 1985. Measuring one mile long and a quarter-mile wide, 125-acre Woods Island provides a unique habitat for a rich variety of plant life, including many species that are rare or threatened in Vermont.

There is no ferry service to the island and visitors must make their own arrangements. There are no docks; visitors must either beach their boat or anchor off. The beach tends to be fairly rocky, except for a point along the east shore, from which the walk to campsites is between one-quarter and three-quarters of a mile.

Woods Island is a“remote area” campground. Remote area campsites, while beautiful, are not for everybody. Sanitary facilities are minimal, and there is no potable water supply. Each campsite does have a fire ring and a nearby composting toilet. The island’s five campsites are situated around the two-mile shoreline, and are connected by a trail system. This gives you great privacy, but it also means you’re going to have to walk and carry your own gear from wherever you come ashore. If it is work, it is worth it! Camping is by reservation only on designated sites. Reservations(2-night minimum) Fires are permitted in designated fire rings only. Parking: Kill Kare State Park is the best place to park and get directions for boating to Woods Island, Knight Island or Burton Island.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities and facilities are available at Burton Island State Park?

Burton Island State Park offers different amenities than Woods Island State Park. Woods Island is a more rustic experience as part of Vermont's island park system in Lake Champlain. Unlike Burton Island which has more developed facilities, Woods Island (measuring one mile long and a quarter-mile wide) provides a more natural, primitive camping experience. The 125-acre island offers unique habitat features but fewer amenities. For specific facilities at Burton Island, contact Vermont State Parks directly as they maintain different development levels across their island parks. Woods Island became Vermont's forty-fifth state park in 1985 and maintains a more wilderness-focused experience.

What activities can I do while camping at Burton Island State Park?

While camping at Burton Island State Park, you can enjoy water-based activities similar to those available at Woods Island State Park. Lake Champlain's 'inland sea' provides excellent opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and boating. Nature enthusiasts can explore the island's unique ecosystems, as these island parks provide distinctive habitats for various plant and animal species. Hiking along shoreline trails offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding with the diverse avian population. The islands' isolation creates a peaceful environment perfect for relaxation and stargazing away from light pollution.

How do I get to Burton Island State Park in Vermont?

Burton Island State Park is a different island park from Woods Island State Park. While both are located in Lake Champlain's 'inland sea', they are separate destinations. To reach Burton Island, you must take a ferry from Kill Kare State Park in St. Albans. The ferry operates on a regular schedule during the camping season. There is no bridge or road access as it is truly an island experience. Woods Island, in contrast, is also only accessible by boat, but has different access points. Always check with Vermont State Parks for current transportation information.

When is the best time to visit Burton Island State Park?

The best time to visit Burton Island State Park (or its neighboring Woods Island State Park) is during the warm summer months when Lake Champlain offers ideal conditions for water activities. The Vermont island parks in Lake Champlain's 'inland sea' typically have a short but beautiful season, generally running from late spring through early fall. Summer provides the most reliable weather for enjoying water activities and island exploration. Fall offers spectacular foliage views but with cooler temperatures. The parks' operating seasons are limited by weather and transportation access, so verify opening dates before planning your trip.
