    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

New Discovery State Park Campground in Marshfield, Vermont provides specialized horse camping facilities within Groton State Forest. The campground features dedicated horse stalls for overnight equestrian camping. The park offers a mix of campsites in wooded areas and open fields, with some sites specifically designed to accommodate horses and their owners. Restrooms with showers, drinking water, and sanitary dump stations are available to all campers. The campground is open from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Some reviewers note that the sites are well separated and private, providing ample space for horses and camping equipment.

The surrounding Groton State Forest offers extensive trail networks suitable for horseback riding. Riders can access multiple ponds including Osmore Pond, Kettle Pond, and Ricker Pond within a short distance. A rail trail connects to the campground, allowing for extended riding opportunities without having to trailer horses elsewhere. The forest roads provide additional riding routes through the Vermont countryside. Horse owners should note that facilities are generally well maintained, though some visitors have reported occasional issues with bathroom supplies. Advance reservations are recommended, especially during peak summer months, as equestrian sites can be difficult to secure on weekends. The campground charges $28 per night plus an additional $5 daily state park fee per adult.

      New Discovery State Park Campground

Drove through on my way past

This easy-to-access campground has made it on my list of places to stay.

There are two loops of sites, some deep in the woods with great-looking trees, others in a field, and some in between. There are even sites with stalls if you're into horses.

The bathhouse looks typical and clean.

Not much cell service, but some in places.

Easy access to a lake and a picnic pavilion.

Noticed more than a few sites that I could hang at.

      AuSable Chasm Campground

      Beautiful Area

The workers are very accomodating. They are across the road from the Chasm to hike, Tube down the river , raft, rock climb , adventure course. They have a small store and rec room for kids. I think they are making improvements always. This camp ground is a short drive to Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, Vermont State and so much more. The Chasm has their own store and cafe

      AuSable Chasm Campground

      Cute and Quaint

Upon arrival, the front desk clerk was very nice and helpful. We found our way to the tent sites, nestled in the very back corner which for us was exactly what we like. Sites were a medium distance apart but still spacious enough to not be close to neighbors. Showers and restrooms were nearby and it being a weekday, there really wasn’t much traffic of campers or hikers. It was cozy and tucked into the woods with town only being a few miles away!

      Groton Forest Road Campground

      Horrible

If I could leave a no star rating, I would. To anyone who is looking to park there camper for the season, I recommend going elsewhere. The previous owner was a more reasonable guy and well respected. Save yourself the time and energy and do not sign a contract here, unless you want to later be told you have to leave for a reason that will not be discussed. The current owner is a dictator who likes to show favoritism. Please save yourself the trouble and try a different campground, there are plenty in the state of Vermont.

      New Discovery State Park Campground

      Interesting State Park

This state park has a little bit of everything. There are sites with electric hookups as well as some without. Some sites are in the middle of a grassy field while others are tucked in the trees. Site size various pretty vastly as you travel through the campground. There are two main loops, one is more secluded and spaced out than the other. The campground loops have bath houses, complete with coin operated showers. Park staff were attentive and restrooms were being cleaned with frequency.

There are more remote walk-in shelters on the Osmore Pond, located within New Discovery State Park. The shelters are rustic, have shared outhouses between a few sites, fire pits and small picnic tables. The remote sites are spaced nicely around the pond along a hiking trail that skirts the perimeter. The walk from the parking area to the shelters varies, depending what side of the pond you are camping on. If bringing a full-sized cooler(or other large/luxury car camping items) be sure you are heading to a site closer to the parking area. It would be a challenge to get some of those larger, heavier items to sites across the pond from the parking lot.

      AuSable Chasm Campground

      Beautiful/Fun Campground

I wish I had my bike!!! I didn’t know that this was a biking campground and there were SO MANY trails. Made the most of them with running, but overall, a fantastic campground. Showers were clean, staff was very friendly. Sites and attractions within walking distance (but busy roads to cross).

      New Discovery State Park Campground

      Great site, poorly maintained facilities

I camped at New Discovery this weekend, the sites are well separated and private. The grounds are beautiful and well situated to enjoy Groton State Forest. My complaint is in regards to the maintenance of the facilities. The Women’s bathroom ran out of toilet paper and was never replaced. More upsetting was that the soap container was empty all weekend. At a time like this hand washing is more important than ever! It was very disappointing!

      AuSable Chasm Campground

      Closest campground to Ausable Chasm

We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough.

The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn’t that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining.

Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it’s a game of “what’s behind door number 1?”  There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question. The bathrooms were clean and had soap, paper towels, a garbage receptacle, and a mirror in each.

Lots of ant hills throughout the campground so be cautious where you set up a tent. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large and nice-looking playground, pool, volleyball net, disc golf and mountain biking/hiking trails. It also looked like there were cross country ski trails but not sure if the campground or cabins would be open in the winter.

Biggest advantage is that Ausable Chasm(a separate business) is directly across the street from the campground and it is very close to the ferry that will take you to Burlington, VT, our next destination.

    Guide to Johnson

Equestrian camping near Johnson, Vermont thrives in the summer months when trail conditions are optimal. What to do

Trail riding access: The campground connects directly to an extensive rail trail system where riders can cover significant distances. According to Rick S., "Right along a long rail trail where you can put in many miles and not even know it. Swimming and boating is a short ride in a couple different directions, Osmore pond, Kettle pond, or Ricker pond."

Pond exploration: Multiple water bodies surround the Groton Forest Road Campground, offering fishing and paddling opportunities. Chris H. notes that the area is "Great for Campers and tenters. Good fishing and plenty of hiking."

Winter activities: While the equestrian facilities close for winter, the surrounding forest trails convert to cross-country skiing routes when snow conditions permit. The trail network accommodates various skill levels with both groomed and backcountry options.

    What campers like

Private site layouts: The campground design provides good separation between camping areas. Sarah C. explains, "There are two main loops, one is more secluded and spaced out than the other. The campground loops have bath houses, complete with coin operated showers."

Remote shelter options: For those seeking more seclusion while horseback riding near Johnson, Vermont, the AuSable Chasm Campground offers alternative accommodations. Levi M. reports, "We found our way to the tent sites, nestled in the very back corner which for us was exactly what we like. Sites were a medium distance apart but still spacious enough to not be close to neighbors."

Natural surroundings: The forest setting creates a peaceful environment for both horses and campers. Miccal M. observed during a drive-through, "There are two loops of sites, some deep in the woods with great-looking trees, others in a field, and some in between. What you should know

Facilities maintenance: Bathroom upkeep can be inconsistent during busy periods. Robin B. reports, "The grounds are beautiful and well situated to enjoy Groton State Forest. My complaint is in regards to the maintenance of the facilities. The Women's bathroom ran out of toilet paper and was never replaced."

Water access for RVs: New Discovery State Park Campground has some limitations for filling RV tanks. Laura M. advises, "The spigots for the water are not threaded. We tried our water bandit, with messy wet results. Luckily, we found we could unscrew the head of the hose at the dump station and had no problem filling our tank with potable water."

Reservation requirements: Horse camping sites fill quickly, especially during summer weekends. Saige V. suggests regarding nearby options, "Reservations are def a plus. Can be difficult to get into on the weekend."

    Tips for camping with families

Shelter options: The lean-to sites provide a unique experience for families with children. They have food compost bins here, but the rangers keep forgetting to unlock the bin, so you just have to ask them."

Wildlife viewing: Children can enjoy observing the local wildlife from a safe distance. Rick S. describes the entertainment value, "There were squirrels that would spend lots of time throughout the day sending loose the green pine cones and then come down and chew them up. Pretty entertaining except for when they drop them on your tarps."

Recreational facilities: Ausable Chasm Campground offers additional family-friendly amenities near Johnson. larry notes, "Pool was clean, play ground kids loved it. And facilities were clean, with hot showers."

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Road conditions within campgrounds can affect RV access to horse camping facilities near Johnson. Brian P. warns about one nearby location, "The 'road' into the campground is more like a goat trail, with numerous washouts and uneven rocks and dirt. RV site 8 is so out of level that we couldn't get our Airstream level unless we put 10" of blocking under both axles."

Hookup availability: For RVers requiring services, several campgrounds offer various levels of connectivity. Heather M. shares, "3 night stay, tent camping on a site with water and electric. The site we had was quite large, I had booked an end site (#73) hoping it would be big!"
