New Discovery State Park Campground specializes in equestrian camping within Vermont's 26,000-acre Groton State Forest. The dedicated horse camping area sits at approximately 1,100 feet elevation in the northern section of the forest. Seasonal temperatures range from 70-85°F during summer months with cooler nights, making it comfortable for both riders and horses during peak season.
What to do
Trail riding opportunities: Equestrian campers at New Discovery State Park Campground have direct access to miles of forest trails. "Awesome state park. Right along a long rail trail where you can put in many miles and not even know it. Swimming and boating is a short ride in a couple different directions, Osmore pond, Kettle pond, or Ricker pond," notes Rick S.
Pond exploration: Multiple ponds within riding distance offer water access. "There are hiking trails right from the campground, which we always appreciate. You can also go down to the water and rent a kayak or canoe from the rangers," shares Laura M. Osmore Pond is closest to the campground, with Kettle and Ricker ponds both within a 2-mile ride.
Winter activities: While the main campground closes after Columbus Day, the surrounding forest trails remain accessible for day use through winter. The area transforms into a network of cross-country ski trails when snow cover is adequate, typically December through March depending on conditions.
What campers like
Private sites: Campers consistently mention site privacy as a major benefit. "I camped at New Discovery this weekend, the sites are well separated and private. The grounds are beautiful and well situated to enjoy Groton State Forest," reports Robin B. Sites in the wooded section offer natural screening between neighbors.
Wildlife viewing: The forest setting provides opportunities to observe native wildlife. "We saw fresh moose poop on a hike but sadly no moose or other wildlife. There are bears around the area though so please be bear smart when camping here," advises Laura M. from New Discovery State Park Campground. Early morning and dusk offer the best wildlife viewing times.
Site variety: Groton Forest Road Campground, located just 2 miles north of New Discovery, offers additional camping options. "Great for Campers and tenters. Good fishing and plenty of hiking," mentions Chris H. This alternative provides electric hookups not available at New Discovery.
What you should know
Water access limitations: While potable water is available, it may not suit all RV needs. "The spigots for the water are not threaded. We tried our water bandit, with messy wet results. Luckily, we found we could unscrew the head of the hose at the dump station and had no problem filling our tank with potable water," explains Laura M.
Bathroom maintenance: Facility upkeep can vary during busy periods. Robin B. notes, "The Women's bathroom ran out of toilet paper and was never replaced. More upsetting was that the soap container was empty all weekend." Bringing backup supplies is recommended, especially for weekend stays.
Reservation needs: Securing sites in advance is essential during peak season. "Reservations are def a plus. Can be difficult to get into on the weekend," advises Saige V. about nearby Groton Forest Road Campground. Horse camping sites at New Discovery book quickly, particularly for summer weekends and holidays.
Tips for camping with families
Shelter options: For families seeking a more sheltered experience, consider the lean-to sites. "The lean-to sites are really cool, and if I was tent camping I think they'd be so fun to sleep in," recommends Laura M. These structures provide protection from rain while maintaining an outdoor camping experience.
Field vs. forest sites: Site selection matters for family camping. "There are two loops of sites, some deep in the woods with great-looking trees, others in a field, and some in between," mentions Miccal M. Families with younger children often prefer field sites for better visibility and play space.
Bathroom proximity: When camping with children, consider site location relative to facilities. "We stayed at the Eagle leanto and is perfect for hanging multiple hammocks. Close enough to the bathrooms too," shares Rick S., noting the convenience for families with frequent bathroom needs.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: RV campers should carefully research specific sites before booking. "Some sites are so sloped I don't even know how a car would camp there. Some sites are out in the open grass where you just find a spot within the site that works for you," explains Laura M. from New Discovery State Park Campground.
Seasonal considerations: The campground's opening dates affect planning. The area typically sees final spring snowmelt by mid-April, with camping season running from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, making this period particularly popular for reservations.
Limited connectivity: Cell service throughout the area is minimal. This creates a true disconnected experience but requires advance planning. Download maps, reservation details, and any needed information before arrival as connectivity cannot be guaranteed within the campground or surrounding forest areas.
