The Best Camping Near Ferron, Utah

We stayed here twice this summer and really liked it both times. All the tenting campsites are on the Millsite Reservoir but if you go higher than site number 17 you are a bit further from the water. The campground is open, so not totally private, but it was so quiet it didn't really matter. We went for a couple of hikes in the Ferron Canyon which you can walk to, and they have paddle boarding on the reservoir which we didn't have time to do. They don't have typical fire rings on the ground - they are up off the ground. See photo.

Really pretty geology and views! Some hiking right on site, bring a kayak. My neighbors all had golf gear, not sure where the course is. Lots of mountain bikes on the trails too (hike in the opposite direction!). Sites are not private but it’s still lovely. Basic State Park accommodations, clean, well-cared for, actual hot showers. We didn’t get reservations (it was winter), but you might want to since it’s a small and beautiful site. 


Reservoir camping 

It’s a bit out of the way, but is a family favorite. The campsites are nice and they have really nice bathrooms. They were redoing the Dam while we were there last, so we couldn’t enjoy the lake. We did, however, head up the mountain and had some good success fishing close by. The golf course is always fun and is usually not very crowded. Overall we had a great time.

The geology is beautiful. The red and grey rock mountains are indescribably peaceful. The was water is very, very low because the dam is under construction but you can walk down the boat dock and get in. Any where else you will sink nearly a foot in the mud. The camp site it well taken care of and perfectly located on the beach. 

Peaceful reservoir 

I selected the Millsite Campground because of its proximity to the Moore Cutoff road’s interesting geology, located a few miles away. Driving from I-70 to Millsite in Ferron on UT-10 was joyless because the landscape is so chaotic, wounded by nature and mining. But Millsite provides some respite if you are arriving in an RV. It’s full hookups and dump site are quite adequate. The reservoir was almost empty in October, although only two RVs used the place on the night we stayed there. The less pricey partial hookup sites were full. Very quiet in the full hookup area. Clean. The grey morass quickly falls away when heading south from UT-10. Millsite and Ferron have fall color that perks things up a bit. 

Interesting Contrasts

We have a 36’ Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site MI08 for 3 days in mid June. We left our boondocking site in the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM to get electric and water hookups because the temperatures were climbing into the 100’s in the area. The sites are nice, but closer together than most SP CGs, although the pull-through sites are angled, so you’re not looking in your neighbor’s windows and there are some trees between them as well. AT&amp;T coverage was fair, with 2-3 Bars of LTE service and speeds up to about 2 MB/s. There were a few tall trees at each of the sites, but there were gaps between them, so we were able to get DISH coverage on all three western satellites at our site. There were zero OTA channels to be had with our fixed omni antenna.

Only 3 campers Memorial Day evening. Easy pull through sites in the electric and water hookup area. Choose the area because of the Rochester Panel Rock Art and The Dry Canyon trail after two days in the San Rafael Swell area. Sites closer together than I like but worked out because we were the only trailer in the section. 


Quiet Memorial Day Stay

Enjoy the drive up to the top of the canyon. Have to be careful of ATV’s. Beautiful view of a rock wall formation.
