Brown bears frequent this forested state campground along the Buskin River, where salmon runs draw both wildlife and anglers. The site provides water hookups for RVs alongside walk-in tent spots, with standard amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, and trash service. Campers report world-class salmon fishing just steps from their sites, though proper food storage becomes critical given the active bear population. Eagles also gather during fishing seasons, adding to the wildlife viewing opportunities. Despite feeling remote among the trees, the campground sits close to Kodiak city limits, making resupply runs manageable. For additional options, campers can explore places to camp near Kodiak throughout the island.
Description
Buskin River State Recreation Site borders the Buskin River and is near the state airport. The Buskin River is one of the most productive fisheries on the Kodiak road system. Visitors from around the world visit this river to fish for sockeye and coho salmon.
For those that like to hike or mountain bike, there are old military roads connecting WWII structures hidden in the spruce forest on the north side of the park. Visitors can expect to see a variety of birds and wildlife including brown bears, eagles, harlequin ducks, and harbor seals. Camping sites are available on a first come first serve basis and most camping sites are suitable for RVs.
