Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground sits 30 miles from Houston and spans flat terrain with Spanish moss-draped trees. The park features 40 full hookup sites and multiple hiking trails under a dense canopy that provides ample shade during hot Texas summers. Temperatures frequently reach above 90°F from June through September, making the wooded campsites particularly valuable for glamping in Hufsmith, Texas and surrounding areas.
What to do
Hiking on well-marked trails: Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground offers family-friendly hiking opportunities with clearly marked paths. "The trails were beautiful and easy to get through (marked well) with all of us and the staff was helpful and kind enough to let us know which ones were closed. Most of the trails were short (less than a mile), so if you are looking for a place for moderate or extreme hiking, it is not here, but for the kids, these were perfect!"
Fishing in Lake Livingston: Wolf Creek Park provides excellent fishing access with lakefront campsites. The park includes a boat ramp with fuel available for purchase and rentals for water recreation. "Wolf Creek Park is well maintained with many nice shady campsites. Sites have water and electricity and some have sewer hookups. There's a nice swimming area, playground and boat ramp with fuel for purchase."
Wildlife viewing: The parks near Hufsmith offer excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, especially for deer and birds. "Saw lots of deer that came fairly close to us. We were able to listen in on a conversation between a very large owl who had taken up residence in one of the trees by our site, and a long distance friend several sites down."
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: The camping areas provide good separation between neighbors at many locations. "Even the smallest site had plenty of room for a family to enjoy the outdoors without feeling cramped." Sites at Wolf Creek Park are particularly noted for their size, with one camper mentioning, "This campground has plenty of shaded sites with plenty of space for walking pets, riding bicycles or just fishing."
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards for their bathrooms and showers. "The facilities were old, but very well taken care of and clean! The campsites were very clean and we watched a few times as people left that the rangers would come out and clean them immediately!"
Security measures: Several parks implement security features for a safer stay. "They have a guarded gate and cute store in the park. The bathroom/showers are very clean and well kept." Another camper noted, "This park is closed to the general public on weekends, so even if it is filled with campers, things are usually pretty calm and quiet."
What you should know
Shade availability varies: While some campgrounds offer excellent tree coverage, others have limited shade. "We wanted a site fairly close to the bathrooms because of the kiddos, one big enough to fit us all, and also one with a lot of shade because it was hella hot! Just be aware if you're going with a group, the big sites do not have much shade."
Bathroom access planning: At busy campgrounds, restroom facilities can become crowded. "Very few bathrooms and showers, so if you are going during peak season be aware you could be waiting in line (especially the girls restroom/showers). During our stay there were many Boy Scout groups camping and many others, but thankfully I am an early riser, and got to the showers by 6 AM with no wait!"
Site selection systems: Thousand Trails Lake Conroe uses a first-come, first-served system for specific sites. "The campground is huge, and you cannot reserve a specific site. You drive around and pick a site, then call and let them know which one you're in. This is fine, but we were looking for a quiet, private site and there are very few of those."
Construction impacts: Road construction can affect access routes. "Due to Interstate 10 construction, the eastbound exit for San Felipe is closed so the navigation system took us further East and then backtracked on some horrible condition rural roads. Recommend going to Brookshire and using FM 359 and then FM 1458 to reach Park Road unless you want to really beat up your rig."
Tips for camping with families
Water features for kids: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park offers excellent water recreation for families. "We camped during the week and it wasn't very crowded. Plenty to do for our little ones. Splash pad, water slides, pool, lazy river, fishing, golf cart rental and more. We will be back."
Halloween camping events: Several parks offer special Halloween activities. "We have been to this park twice now, once at a tent site and once at a Yogi on the Lake cabin. Both during Halloween time a year apart. What a FUN place to be!! Our kids loved that we got to go Trick or treating at a campground!"
Swimming areas with gradual entry: Wolf Creek Park has water areas suitable for younger swimmers. "We tried the swimming area for the first time and we absolutely loved it. It's perfect for the kiddos and not too deep, no matter how far you go out."
Weekend vs. weekday visits: For quieter experiences with children, consider mid-week stays. "We camped during the week and it wasn't very crowded. The campground is huge, and we like to camp for the relaxation and serenity of it, and this campground just isn't that type of place on weekends."
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Some sites require adjustments for RVs. "The site required leveling side-to-side. Quiet campsite. No highway noise. Train whistle in distant."
Cell service considerations: Mobile connectivity varies by location and provider. "AT&T 1 bar signal" at one park, while another reports, "I had 5G network with T-Mobile and good TV reception."
Full hookup availability: Houston West RV Park and several other locations offer complete utility connections. "Full hookups with 30 amps. Semi circle drive thru that fit my 44 ft motorhome and towed Jeep." This makes luxury glamping in Hufsmith, Texas area more accessible for those with larger rigs.
Late arrival procedures: Some parks offer special check-in processes after hours. "They were very accommodating when I called and gave us an easy spot up front because we were arriving after 8pm. Level spot, no fuss. Quiet night." Another camper noted, "Staff is awesome and helped us get in for a late check in."
