The Best Camping Near Amarillo, Texas

We came in to this campground late. They had a pool but it was closed when we arrived. Sites were small, but accommodating. The playground was a big hit after a long drive. Restrooms were clean and showers were free. We couldn't stake our tents down, the ground was kind of hard. But for our overnight it fit the bill. The sites had picnic tables and grills, sort of. They weren't at each site, almost like a shared grill setup. They also had a small area for dogs to exercise if you brought your pup along.

A few things to do

There is a pool available and it there is a chance of rain in the summer. My family and I stayed in one of their Kabins.

Good run in spot 

As with many KOA’s they are located in some questionable areas, this one is not the exception. However, the staff is very helpful and the campground is very well maintained. This KOAis accesible to Interstate as well as Old Route 66, Cadillac Ranch and Big Tex.


Great break point

We enjoyed staying here. The hay rides were fun. There a pool, laundry facilities and little store. Also a clubhouse with WiFi. RV spots with full hookups. Price was good not great.

Hay Rides! 

We have stayed here two or three times and the best part is how clean everything is. I always want to stay longer. It’s quiet at night and the stars really are big and bright!!! I will always try to stop here if I’m traveling through we’ve never been disappointed. They have pull throughs, cabins and tent sites! 👍🏽

It’s a KOA, which sums it up pretty well. They have the basics: clean restroom and shower, pool, playground, small store and gift shop. But, they insist on putting everyone very close together.
They have plenty of space, room for lots of camping and RVs. When we were there they were only 1/4 full, and we were all in one row, so close together we couldn’t open our canopy.
One good thing about that was lots of room for the dogs to run.
The best thing, however, was free limousine rides to The Big Texan Steakhouse!
Sure, it’s a tourist trap, but the steak was great, and how often do you get to ride in a limo with longhorns?

The KOA there was pretty nice, though we noticed that it was next to the Airport and not far from the train tracks. So we heard train whistles all night. It was nice and warm in the area. Sunshine and warmth was very nice. We spent 2 nights, so had a day to explore and did we explore.

We went to Route 66 about 6 blocks long and had a lot of Antique Stores and art stores and restaurants. Here are a few photos.

We stopped for lunch at Smokey Joe's on Route 66 in Amarillo for lunch and I have to say service was horrible and food was just not very good. We got menus and they took our order right away. We sat and sat and the folks that came in about 5 minutes after us got their fried pickles, which we also ordered, but we sat. 2 waitresses went by at least twice including ours. Don put his beer bottle out but nothing. Finally after 20 minutes and everyone else eating who came it after us, I got a hold of our waitress and she asked did we need anything - Ya food. She said she would check then the other waitress stopped by and asked. Our waitress came back and said that they changed paper in their machine and our order got lost. So we waited. Had cold Fired pickles and the hamburger Don and I ordered was dry and not very tasty for what they said was on it - Bacon, Onion straws, cheese etc, they did take off the cost of the hamburger but sure wouldn't go back. There was a Mexican restaurant across the street we will try if we come back that way.

We were glad that we were in a trailer as the Antique Stores were very good and Don said he would have taken a few things home if we had a place for them.

Airports, Trains and Route 66

Full hook up. Clean. Good place to stay if you want all hookups. Friendly staff. 

Good

Stayed here because we were traveling through and it was nice and served its purpose but the pull through sites are super close together. Our picnic table was 3 ft from the rig next to us. If you are looking for privacy, this is not your place. If you are looking for a safe and friendly place to spend the night, I’d give this a go.

Pretty typical KOA

Very clean and convenient. We were able to call after the online reservations were closed to get a tent spot. They had an overnight reservation box with everything we needed since we arrived after office hours. Made the process super easy. 

Convenient 

I only spent one night at this campground but could tell that it is a great spot. It’s a little bit hard to find but once you do it is an oasis. Everything is kept up to date and clean and the Wi-Fi was one of the fastest that I’ve encountered. I highly recommend this KOA for anyone passing through or as an extended stay.

Very nice campground 

We stayed one night. We would stay here again. It is off the interstate just far enough to be a quiet location. I wouldn't let the comments of it being "hard to find" cause you to avoid it. Get off the interstate go north about 2 miles, then east about 1/2 mile. There is a big KOA sign on the right.

About three miles from I 40. Very clean, friendly staff. Sites are large and even. Pool, playground and games available. Clean showers and bathrooms.

Very Enjoyable

Like most KOAs, very nice and helpful people.  This location is very convenient off of I-40.  The park is nice, but pretty basic in the sparse grass lands of the Texas panhandle.  
Near the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon (supposedly the 2nd largest canyon in the USA).  Would stay here again.

KOA Amarillo

As of 2021 it is $30 per night for tent site. $40 if you need electrical outlet.
The limit is 3 nights. They won’t let you stay a week even if they are half-occupied which is bummer as I work and can only move during weekends.
Very windy.
Very loud trains blowing horns every time they pass.
Moderately loud airport.
Clean restrooms and showers. AC cooled and heated.
Each tent site has water tap.

Stoped here for quick overnight stay from Dallas to Albuquerque. 

Great AT&T reception 

Came over to Amarillo for the weekend to see the sights, the staff are very friendly and helpful. While the campground is close to an airport and train track, I didn't have a problem. Overall, a great base for a weekend excursion.  They offer clean bathrooms and  showers, a shuttle to the Big Texan steakhouse and a gift shop. WiFi is limited but cell signal is great.


Weekend roadtrip 

Was supposed  to be overnight stay, but had a simple mechanical issue I had to deal with. So found out about 3 day max stay, never experienced that before. Local worker on staff was extremely  helpful. Supervisor  not so much. Nice camp store and clean campground. Ended up moving to another local park for the 3rd night.

Strange policies 

There is a lot of fun artwork around the campground. They have all of the usual amenities that you’d expect from a KOA. We checked in after hours and our information was left in the after hours check in box near the door making our arrival easy. The only downside is the proximity to the airport and the railroad so you hear train horns and airplanes taking off throughout the night.

We only got to stay one night here but we would totally visit again.  It has pull through sights with full hookups, clean bathrooms and laundry.  Everyone who works here is very polite and helpful.  Definitely recommend!

This place has everything you need!

Absolutely loved our stay here.  Booked it on the day of our stay on the app.  Having to flee bad weather and horrible prior stay.  The staff was so helpful, friendly and provided awesome recommendations in the area.  Sites are nice for plains. Hook ups, wifi and cable were great.  Super clean bathrooms and laundry facilities.  We got a 4 night stay, even though they usually cap stays at 3 nights.  Small clean dog park, and pool (not open yet). Must see Palo duro state park in the area.  Only negatives: train and airport noise. Had to level rig a bit, but not bad. Even prairie dogs close to property.  Which was cool to see.

Nice, clean place. Small store on premises. Friendly and helpful staff. Would stay here again! 

People; great Location; good just off Hwy 40 Bathrooms; clean Showers; great, just needs air or exhaust better, gets really warm.  Site; good, little to no trees or coverage which would be great being weather can be really hot. 
Note: extremely windy, lots of dust blowing around. 

Campsite #2

Wifi didn’t work. Pool closed at 7:30. The camp was very clean with very clean bathrooms, but I wish I would’ve been able to use more of the amenities for the price. 

Not great for the price

We stayed here this week for one night in a long cabin.   We found this KOA to be well maintained and it's bathroom facilities very clean.  

The RV sites have both 30amp and 50amp power.  No power at the Tent sites.

It's a great place to stop when passing through the area.

Camp staff were very friendly, sites well maintained, and facilities very clean and kept up with. 
Location is a little off the main road and right by the airport. So noise was a little issue. But a great place for passing through.

Great place for passing through

I had read about the airport and road noise, but was unprepared for the 140+ dB train horns that started around 11 pm and (honestly) every 15-30 minutes thereafter until 4 am ish. There is a crossing right across the access road that was very busy on the night we stayed. Worst night of a 9 night trip. I know it is beyond their control, but they should give away ear plugs like the casinos on Freemont St in Vegas. Also, the bath house was un airconditioned and the vent fan can't move air because the main door is weatherproof. The only toilet was clogged when I went to use it, but there was already a plunger there so I could clear it before using it. I would not stay here again.

I wasn’t planning on staying for nearly a week but some unforeseen circumstances have extended my stay in Amarillo KOA for about a week now! 

Super friendly staff, clean facilities, the owners care!! 

Clean, Friendly, and Safe!

Really clean bathroom and shower facilities with hot water (which is always a plus). After hours check-in was easy breezy. 

Nice for an overnight stay 

Do NOT stay here. There are extremely loud, extremely close trains going by every 20-30 minutes all night long. The grounds are clean but the spaces are too tight and trees too close to be safe for your slide outs in the constant wind. Don’t bother

The location is conveniently within a couple of miles of I-40 but far enough away that you don't have any interstate noise. There is an airport nearby, but we didn't find the noise frequent or obtrusive. The team that works here is very friendly and accommodating. The sites were level, the power was clean, and the water pressure was good. Laundry facilities (coin-operated) were clean and open 24 hours due to being behind a code-locked door, which is super convenient. 

We had planned to stop over for two nights to visit Palo Duro Canyon and other sites in the area, but ended up booking a third night due to some work needs and had no hesitation extending our stay because it was such a nice little campground. It's quite wide open, so there is not much privacy, but this is a KOA Journey, so it's designed to be more for people passing through rather than a destination. Remember that Amarillo is often quite windy, so if you're staying here when it's hot, you may not be able to use your awnings. 

Overall, though, a spot we'll put on our list for when we're passing through the area again. 

Good location, great team

Pretty and quiet spot to stop for the night while traveling. It’s a small campground with nice facilities. Hot showers, clean bathrooms, pool open late. 

Nice overnight spot

I arrived late on a Saturday evening and they were full but the very nice young lady at check in let me squeeze my little TAXA TigerMoth into a van/tent spot.  I was very tired and very happy that they could accommodate me.  Everyone was friendly and helpful.  The bathroom was clean.  The store was well stocked.  Except for an occasional jet taking off from the nearby airport it was nice and quiet.  I slept great!

Friendly and Quiet 

The gal who checked us in was very friendly and nice. The site is very clean and has everything you need. The only thing that could be different is maintenance on the pool because it turned my hair blue/ green. I also saw 2 other people with blue hair. Yikes

Nice place to stay 

This was our second visit to the Amarillo KOA. When we were here several years ago there wasn’t much but a dusty field.
There are many improvements , including a pool and game room.
The staff were extra nice.
Last visit they offered a limo ride to the Big Tex Steak House, but that wasn’t available this trip.

Much better than first visit.

We were in site #12. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.  We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.   

The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees.   This was a smaller lot with our  neighbors very close.  

The lot does not have a concrete patio or fire ring but has a picnic table.  

It is an easy access to the campground from highway -(approximately 1 mile from highway).  

There is free WiFi.  They do not offer Cable TV but there are many channels. 

They do not sell wood since fire burning is not permitted (only charcoal).  

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster (located through out the park).  

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts.  They do not provide golf cart rentals.  There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.  

They do have a heated Swimming pool.  

There is a Playground. 
There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, or volleyball courts.

They have a great general store.  They sell limited food &amp; alcohol as well.  

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. There is not really anywhere to ride bikes outside of campground. 

They have cabins for rent and tent areas. 

They have 2 shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 6 washers and 3 large dryers.
It is approximately $2 to wash and approximately $2 to dry a load.  


They have two side-by-side fenced in dog parks.  



There were no trails to hike in the campground.  

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon state park (a must do - also stop at the Sad Monkey Mercantile for wine, beer, pizza) and Route 66 Motor Speedway (quite entertaining).  The Texan Steak Ranch was delicious and a fun experience (reservations can be made on OpenTable).  Also visit the Paramount Social Club (a speakeasy).   This is located in the basement of the Barfield Hotel (pull the lever on the cigarette machine to access the secret door).

Checked in at office and staff escorted us to our spot; had a pull through spot.  This is a big campground, but decent enough space between units.  Next to the airport but not much activity in air traffic; does not appear to be in the flight path.
Bathrooms were clean and spacious; two showers for the men side.
Campground is clean, no trash.
Would stay here again.
