The Best Camping Near Edisto Island, South Carolina

This was a remote campground that took about an hour to reach after leaving Interstate 95.  The site had electricity and there were showers and flush toilets.  You were only a walk past the dues to beach on the Atlantic Ocean.  We loved this site.  

At the Beautiful Beach

I mostly do car camping in a two person tent.  The campsite pad has a plug and faucet right next to you and you're on the other side of a sand dune from the beach.  The restrooms are close by to every site.  Beautiful, uncrowded beach that's great for swimming.  About a mile from the camp site is a two mile trail that was great for running and biking.

There are two sections to Edisto Beach State Park. The Ocean side campground is the best with the ocean breezes, but the marsh side campground is an easy bicycle ride from the beach. 

It's South Carolina in the summer, so there are mosquitoes. And the raccoons are pretty fierce so you want to make sure your food is stored securely, so you don't wake up to critters eating your potato chips. 

The restrooms and showers are clean. 

Edisto Island is one of the least developed islands in South Carolina. There is a Piggly Wiggly grocery store to pick up all the things you may have forgotten. There is an ice cream shop and several restaurants, but it is pretty quiet. My favorite thing about staying at Edisto Beach State Park is bicycling to the beach, bicycling along the paths in the state park that lead to a shell mound, built by Native Americans around 2,000 B.C., and bicycling for beers at one of the little bars overlooking the ocean. Another plus is the park's proximity to Botany Bay.

This was not my favorite beach camping. Mostly, we weren't prepared to be shadeless, and the sun was relentless. If you book a spot by the beach, for the love of all things good, bring a proper shade tent. The marsh was our only protection, and we literally sat in it to be out of the sun. Other sites, however, have good shade, especially sites that aren't on the beach. There are no animal boxes for food, and rats and raccoons abound! Be sure to check out the natural beach on Edisto Island. 

Oh, so hot. 

This campground has 106 drive-in sites and 5 hike-in sites. The drive-in sites are split up into two different sections, one being marsh side the other being beach side. I would definitely recommend bringing a bicycle and getting one of the beach side drive-in sites. You can explore the whole island with ease with one and the park also has excellent bike friendly trails. Over the years Edisto has become our favorite beach destination on the east coast. It has a local, non-commercial feel where most of the businesses are still family owned. There are no high rises and almost everyone gets around by bike or golf cart. 

Bicycle Island 

We spent one night at a tent site. The amenities (bathrooms and showers) we very clean. Very busy. On Easter weekend, there was only one empty site. Most campers seem to be in RVs.the neighbors were nice and Edisto Beach was very clean and the people were so welcoming and friendly.  

Laid back and dog friendly

Beautiful Friendly Clean, Quiet, Private. Sites are nestled between the Marsh and Beach. Bathrooms are clean. Staff are friendly. 

One word, WOW! Wonderful campground, great beach access, walking, biking. Moe loved being able to play on the beach! Close by restaurants, pubs, even a grocery store. We will be back soon!

Love how close this was to the beach. We were able to bike there and theres some shade that helped because it's wicked hot.

Clean sites and facilities. Quiet atmosphere. We stayed at the walk in tent sites and they were very nice.

Live Oak Campground

We stayed in the Live Oak campground portion of the State Park at a walk-in rustic tent site. These sites have the most privacy in the park. There are six walk-in sites all with beautiful views of the salt marsh and pleanty of space (within and between sites). The sites are located on one of the many trails in the state park. All trails are open to pedestrians and cyclists alike, and none of the trails are challenging in length or terrain. Matthew and I were able to bike them all in a morning. We visited in early May and had excellent beach weather without much of a crowd!


Quiet Marsh Sites

The beachside campground is narrow which affords easy access to the beach. It's hard to find a spot that doesn't offer a view.

The beach is lovely - clean, quiet, very close to the beach campsites. Bathrooms are clean and well kept although why on earth do some SC state park bathrooms only have a slimy bar of soap to share?  My complaint is that some of the sites are awful - ours had no trees, neighbors breathing down our neck, and nowhere to pitch a tent that wasn’t incredibly hard packed. No playground and the water is salty. I understand this is storm damage, some of it, but it’s an extremely expensive campsite. 

Look out for bad sites 

We camped here during the winter and had fun. This campsite is perfect for riding bikes around. 

Fun park

Our first time in the park and it was great. Low key within a beautiful state park. Steps to a low population beach with TONS of shells to collect. Very quiet at max capacity. Active staffers with smiles on their faces. Getting in or out after hours is a bit confusing as they lock the gates but other than that, no problems. Most people are there for the piece and quiet and relaxing. Visit nearby Botany Bay Plantation WMA for a unique visit.

Beach and biking haven

We stayed at the Live Oaks portion of the campground which is on the marsh side and 1/2 mile from the beach. There are sites right on the beach that we will tryout next time. The Live Oaks sites are more private and shaded. It was a quiet campground. The bathrooms were okay, but not very clean. The bugs are very bad so bring bug repellant. The beach is beautiful and not crowded. The State Park is well-maintained.

Muggy & Buggy

We went to this campground in the middle of June. Great campground, great site. Some sites are full sun, and as it was around 100 degrees every day, that could be a problem for some. It’s right on the edge of the town so it’s easy to walk or bicycle around. The only complaint I had was there is no dump station on site. I had to load my “blue tank “ into my truck and take it about a mile or so down the road to dump. Our site had water and electric, but was told the water was salty. To be honest, I didn’t drink it but we used it for everything else, and it was fine. Park was clean, staff friendly.

My fiancé and I camp here in January of 2017 right before my birthday. The campground is gorgeous, with showers, white sandy beaches, and wifi for you glampers out there. Unfortunately for us it was absolutely freezing and we couldn’t enjoy the beach, but we hiked all the trails there in two days and I can’t begin to say how beautiful the ecosystem is. I’d love to stay there for a week and see even more. Definitely family friendly. I will definitely go back. 

Amazing Campground Woth Everything You Need



we had a great spot to set up. the people that work there where super helpful when arriving. We did have a very short drive to the beach from our camp. Also short trip to great places to eat. the beach was great. I wish they had beach camping available that day. but it was already sold out. The bathrooms where clean.

ThisCampground is by far our favorite. We had a nice level back in sight with some shade from palm trees. This site had a marsh in the background and was steps from the beach. This campground has two loops. We have only stayed in the beach loop. If you stay in the Live Oak Loop it would be a drive to the beach. It is not a walkable distance. Our site was Sandy but packed down and easy to park and back into.We had hook ups for electric and water but had to stop at the dump station down the road for sewer. The water is potable but salty so they recommend a filter or bringing drinking water. We ended up bringing our own drinking water because it was salty even with the water filter. They do sell firewood at the campground for seven dollars a bundle and we got ours for about five dollars a bundle at the Bilo across the street. The Bilo has just about everything you could need for groceries. Lines were long but prices were about average. The price for this campground is a littlemoreThan most but worth it to be right on the beach. Sites fill up quickly so definitely book ahead for this one. We happen to get a last-minute cancellation and felt so lucky. This was an amazing trip and I hope we can stay longer next time. It was relatively quiet, there are areas for kids to ride bikes. No pool or play ground but who needs that with the beach right there. This was a very dog friendly beach and Campground.

In all fairness we stayed at this campground in the hottest part of the summer at a time when they obviously had not finished cleaning up from a devastating hurricane that hit them last year. Some of the sites had a lot of debris still on them. Dump station inconveniently located.

There are two different campgrounds that are part of Edisto State Park - Live Oak and Beach. We like them both! The Live Oak Campground is a short drive away from the beach. However, it is on the marsh with incredible views and live oaks. There are also biking/hiking trails to explore.

The Beach Campground will forever spoil your beach camping. There is a marsh on the back side of the campground and the beach on the front side. It's amazing to be sitting outside of the RV listening tot he waves. The bath houses are always clean, but they are a little dated.

There is a grocery store directly across from the Beach Campground and a few good restaurants and bars to explore nearby. Botany Bay is a super cool spot to check out as well!

One tip - the water is very very salty. Come prepared with water in your tank or bottled water. Also, don't let any of the Edisto water get into your holding tank if you can help it - we did and it took a little bit to flush it out!

Also, in June and July they check the turtle nest that have already hatched to see how the nest did. We didn't get to see any turtles that were in there still, but some people do! It's worth checking to see what programming they have going on.

We have stayed in several sites:

Live Oak:

111 - shady spot not too far from the bath house which was nice. The spots across from this site have a better view of the marsh, but you can still see it through their camp sites. This site is kinda on a corner so it is a little busier.

119 - a nice shady spot that is more private than 111\. A little further walk to the bath house, but still not bad. The sites across from these (116-122) have a little better view

Beach:

47 - this spot doesn't have much shade, but you can catch a glimpse of the ocean from inside your RV! How awesome is that?? Really close the bath house as well as the beach access. Great spot!

46 - this site is right across from the other site we were in. We were excited to be able to book this one! Still close to the beach access and the bath house, but it backs up to the marsh for awesome sunset views!

23 - not much shade in this part of the campground, but it seems to often have a better breeze! You can see the sand dunes from here as well. A little further walk to the beach access and bath house, but still awesome. You can't go wrong here!

33 - kinda the same as above. A little further to the bath house and beach access than 46/47 but still closer than 23\. Not as much privacy in this part of the campground (the inner circle), but you are able to sit outside the RV and listen to waves. Seriously can't go wrong here!

Amazing beach side camping!

My wife and I spent 3 nights here at the seaside campground, site 74. Our site was great, a little secluded by trees and quite large. Our RV is small and we had lots of room. It is only a short walk to the ocean and it was not crowded at all. The restrooms are clean and spacious. Camp personnel are friendly and helpful. Right outside the campground is a grocery store. There are places to eat and shop nearby also. We can’t wait to go back!

Great Campground!!

Edisto is hands-down my absolute favorite beach! My family goes multiple times a year, every year. I love the fact that Edisto is so small that you can even walk from one side of the island to the other (we bring bikes) and it is a lesser known area so less people on the beaches. There is so much wildlife to be seen between dolphins, alligators, sea turtles, and the best crabbing! They were hit pretty hard with hurricanes and are trying to reopen the park but there are a lot of non expensive rentable homes/apartments. Also if you are wanting some nightlife then Charleston is around an hour away!

Very relaxing park

The campground was an easy half mile walk from the beach, and had its own private beachfront place with parking and a bath house. We stayed in the primitive campgrounds and had a beautiful view over the marsh. It was only a short walk from our car to the campground.

Edisto Beach Campground

Very clean campground right on the beach. It’s hard to get a spot so I recommend booking months in advance! Everything is within walking distance-gas station, liquor store, bi-lo grocery store, and restaurants. 
We spent most of our time at Botany Bay plantation heritage preserve (WMA land) which is right down the road. A short half-mile walk leads to an amazing untouched portion of Edisto Beach. I highly recommend Edisto!

NOTE: We stayed at the Live Oak campground so my evaluation is only for that location, not the beach campground. The sites were surrounded by vegetation and with quite a few of the sites you essentially share a site location with another site. The sites vary greatly in size and a I recommend bringing a long freshwater hose with you if you are RVing. I also recommend having your freshwater tank full before arriving for drinking purposes as the water here has a salty taste to it (the rangers inform you of that upon checkin and apparently it’s a thing across the island). 
The park itself was quiet and you have relative privacy (except for noted above). The bugs weren’t too bad but be aware of ticks. While staying at the Live Oak campground you are also able to access the state park’s daytime beach access for free. The beaches here are nice and sandy and the beach access form the park was less crowded in the morning than the public access areas.

NOTE: we did drive through the beach campground while at the other location and noticed a lack of shaded sites compared to the Live Oak Campground.

Would come back again and again.

Our site was very close to the marsh and short trip to the town and beach. The town of Edisto beach is very quaint with many restaurants and shops. We were there in March so it wasn't too crowded or too hot. Very pleasant place to spend time. Thanks to the friendly staff. 

Spacious sites and friendly staff 

Having visited all of the State Parks on the coast Edisto Beach State Park ranks right up there at the top.  We have had the opportunity to stay at the ocean front portion and the Live Oak portion (twice).  Frankly, the Live Oak is probably our favorite.  While the ocean front was nice and we happen to be just across the dune from the ocean it feels more crowded.  The Live Oak offers more privacy and we love the woods and shade.  We pack our stuff in the car for the day and make our way to the beach for the day then head back to our private campsite at Live Oak for a nice quiet relaxing evening.  Either way you can't go wrong with Edisto Beach State Park.

Peaceful

Edisto is such a great destination. The RV sites are right on the beach– it’s amazing. From some of the sites, you can see the ocean from inside your rig. There is a short walk to get out to the beach, but that’s not bad at all. During the winter the beach is still amazing and it is a lot cheaper than staying there in the summer! The bathrooms are ok. The water there is safe to drink, but has a bit of an odor. So, if it’s possible, come with a full tank of fresh water! The sites are water/electric only too so plan accordingly.

We love this campground. Great access to the beach and very close to Botnay Bay Preserve. Be ready for the mosquitos, but this is a great campground.

We frequent Edisto Beach all summer long and decided a fall camping trip could offer a change of pace - we were right! 

The campgrounds at Edisto were awesome! We stayed at one of the marsh front sites (no power no water).. it was incredible! 

The trails were perfect for all 5 in our group.. adults and children. The views spectacular during the day and night!

This is a little gem we were literally driving past on the regular. I’m so happy we visited and have yet another reason to love Edisto! 

We were missing out!

Amy and I have camped at the Live Oak section of the park multiple times (twice this year). We love it. Trails for bike rides or walks. Close to beach. Great staff. Private campsites. We stayed in site 94 this past weekend. Good sized site. Water is very close to front make sure you have enough hose. This site backs up to the main road. You can’t see the road, but there is some traffic noise.

We really enjoyed our to night stay at this campground.  The site are nice and generally spaced well.  The baths are updated and nice. We walked to town for lunch and coffee. We will return again for a longer stay. 

Very nice campground 

We just spent 3 great days on liveoak #109 and partied on the beach side with friends in #72 and #70. The beach has fabulous shells of all types and the surf was roaring- even heard it over at Liveoak!  The restrooms are extremely clean and the little town is right next door(bi-lows is convenient) with great restaurants you can walk or bike to.  Plan to come back many times!  

Best SC beach! 

This is our first time to this state park.  There are 2 separate campgrounds.  One that is right on the beach with plenty of beach access and the other that is called Live Oak campground.  This is the one we stayed at.  The sites are all level with hard packed sand.  They are rather small sites though.  Deepen enough for a fifth wheel but not very wide.  Your fifth wheel and your truck is all that will fit in most sites.  Not a lot of extra room left for all your accessories.  The tails are great and be sure to bring your bike.  The only negative is the amount of Ticks that your dogs will pick up if you take them on the trails.  Be prepared the are tiny little devils!  The park is right off a busy highway so depending on the site you choose you will hear a lot of roadway noise.  We were in site # 89.  Next time I will chose one well away from the highway.  All and all a beautiful place for a weekend getaway!

Great place for a weekend.

This was such an enjoyable place to spend a week. We stayed in the Live Oak loop, which I recommend. The campground sits right in the center of an enchanted palm-frond forest with live oaks draped in Spanish moss. The sites are really private. We felt very safe here and let our kids bike around on their own, which they loved. Lots of hiking trails right off the campground. It's about a mile to the beach (you can bike there, but I'd hesitate going with kids, as the highway gets pretty busy and the bike lane is nothing more than a narrow shoulder). 

  

There is a campground right next to the beach, which looked lovely but stunk to high heaven of decaying marshland. Water also smells, but is drinkable (though I would recommend bringing bottled water for drinking, especially if you have a sensitive digestive system). WiFi is non-existent, but phone signal is good, so if you have a Jetpack, you'll be just fine for internet. The beach itself is really lovely with nice, fine sand. There's a little corner store with grocery basics and a liquor store attached. Also a gas station not far from the campsite.

  

It is about an hour drive to Charleston and centrally located to a lot of nearby travel hotspots and other islands.

Gorgeous, private, perfect!

We stayed at the Beach campground at Edisto State Park.  Gorgeous campground with some sites backing up to the marsh.  All sites were well spaced out (especially on the main road/ not the loop), and all had easy access to the beautiful beach.  Highly recommend bikes as the beach campground is a quick walk or short ride over to Bi-Lo and other parts of main Edisto.

I have visited this campground twice and LOVE IT!!!
Sites are wooded and private. They all have picnic tables and fire rings. Some of them are beachside, others are Marshside but they are all pretty wooded and private. They also have great walking trails and a fabulous camp store! Great picnic areas and a beautiful beach! What more could you ask for? Also the grocery store is right at the entrance of the park for all your necessities.￼￼

Awesome State Park!

Have waited six months into our RV life to start reviews for fair comparisons. Spent two nights here. Our RV maiden voyage, trying it out before we hit the road. Tight spot with trees but exactly why it is so beautiful. Live oak trees, Spanish moss, cycling opportunities top notch. Great dog walking areas. Wish we had stayed longer.

Loved it here!

We had a magical time at Edisto. The Beach campground was just steps from the ocean. Opt for sites 1-12 or 50-75. Bathrooms were great. Shelling was incredible-especially if you walk towards the inlet around low tide.

We stayed in the campground on the salt marsh. Beautiful live oaks shading camping areas. Great atmosphere. Lots of places close by to visit. Only about a 45 min drive to Charleston. Botany Bay was a fantastic experience. The only downside we experienced was we left out coolers outside and the raccoons raided them.

Fantastic Campground located right on the beach in Edisto Island, SC!

First off, I've visited the state park since I was a child, but normally we would go to walk the long beach to the northern inlet area.  This was my second time camping here and first time tent camping.  It was a pure joy and I'll be back whenever I can.

The only drawback is its popularity.  I ended up only being able to spend one night at the beach campground because it is fully booked all the way into October.

There are usually available sites in the Live Oak Campground located on the marsh, but the beach sites go quickly.

Fantastic Campground 

We stayed on the Live Oak side on site 111. Our site was kind of open but still great (since we were there for a meet up/group) but other sites are very deep and private. Bath house was clean although half the showers on the women’s side were closed so there was a line. Short drive to the beach or to Botany Bay.

A Hidden Gem

We had been looking for a place to camp beach side with our teardrop. Loved Edisto! Just a dune separates our site from the beach. The campground is well-maintained, lovely people, and the beach was beautiful. We swam and collected shells. Visited the Serpetarium in the heat of the day.   The tidal basin is lovely too, with lots of wildlife to view.

Quiet beachside camping

I was on the way from Savannah to Charleston and wanted to do car camping. They let me book a night that day for $49.99. Very quick and easy! The campsite and shower facility were clean and well maintained. Love to visit again!! 

Best car camping site 

Was a bit pricey, but a nice place to car camp. Short walk to the beach. Quiet and very clean. The customer service was exceptional, especially the man who works at the Camp Exchange on the beach. He made my teenagers very happy-not an easy task. 

Great place!

Clean well kept camp, no spot more then 100 yards from the beach. At night enjoy the star with the sound of crashing waves. Grocery store right across the street from camp ground depending on where your site is it's about 1/2 mile walk. Sites have ample space but not secluded, beach has more seashells then I've ever seen and I lived on the ocean for 4 years. Highly recommend this spot. 38' class A Roads in weren't bad just a bit off the beaten path about a hr from any normal hustle and bustle. Wifi not good AT&amp;T full bars, antenna tv 50+ channels

Great park near beach, definitely a repeater

This park is wonderful!  You have access to the beach as well as trails through the forest.

There are two campgrounds, one by the beach that fills up fast and one back in the trees which is our preference.  Edisto is not a large town but it does have a grocery store and a few restaurants and shops.  There are no laundromats!  It's about an hour to Charleston.  The marshlands, forest and ocean are stunning!  Botany Bay is nearby and also is a must to see while you are there.

We really enjoyed camping at Edisto Beach for tonight. Quite close to A great beach, you could hear the sounds of the surf at night. Great stargazing and an added bonus of a decent bar and grill half mile up the beach. An easy walk for thirsty beachcomber. Nice gravel sites with water and electric. Enough to do to keep you busy for a few days. We camped in the beach campsite, but there is another about a mile up the road that we didn’t visit. A little cool when we were there 24°.

Great spot for beach, stars, paddling, camping.

First, be aware that this is 1 state park with 2 separate campgrounds. The Oaks are about half a mile away on the other side of intercoastal. We thought we were on the beach. But the sites are shady and nice. Ours was a bit small and our truck had to be park right next to camper. So it wouldn't be in road. We couldn't use fire pit and picnic table was at back of camper.  It's pull thru site but small.. our campers 30ft. It's nice but we really wanted to be on beach. Staff was knowledgeable about things to do and places to eat. The beach is beautiful. 

Lovely

Edisto is an amazing place to explore and have some peace and quiet. The beach is great for walking and shelling. Campground is very nice and the spots are well spaced. Great for bike riding also. We were able to grab a site on the outer end and had amazing views out the back of our rig.

Great place to relax, very quiet. Grounds were kept nicely. Getting 40’ Class A through grounds a little tricky. Need to limb some trees. Remove 1 tree after entry to get through, only had about 2” clearance.

Cold weather 

We have stayed in the Live Oak Campground twice and loved it.  Spots are roomy and the staff is friendly.  We went in off season so the park was quiet.

Love the no commercialism-bike paths and hiking trails a plus-We DID request a back in site a month ago however we were given a busy loop on the road site-oh well- this little island is a time to chill-enjoy the quiet, beauty and sealife-

Beautiful Beaches Small Town

Sites were flat with very little leveling necessary.  We could hear the waves from the campsite!

Edisto Beach state park has two campgrounds. We stayed in the beach campground. There is a beach, but it can’t be seen by most sites. It’s the salt marsh that is most prominent, and with rain it gets pretty marshy all over, but the site pads appear to stay above water. At least with this overnight rain. 
The Live Oak campground suits my taste better. As the name suggests, the sites are nestled in trees and not on top of each other. 

It’s like two different parks

Great state campground.  Water and electric.  Less than a minute walk to the beach.  Can hear the surf at night.  Very clean showers and restrooms.  

Edisto Beach State Campground 

We absolutely love camping at the Live Oak Campground portion of the EBSP. The sites are all spacious, shaded, and clean. The bathrooms are cleaned several times throughout the day (the only thing I don’t like about the bathrooms are the flushers for the toilets - so awkward!). There are trails for walking and biking that are well kept and are ADA accessible. I cannot recommend this place enough. Make sure you have at least one breakfast from Seacow Eatery, enjoy a pizza at Coots, and BBQ from the Briny Swine. McKonkey’s has the best onion rings. For some of the best seafood you’ll eat make sure you go to Flowers just down the road. You can eat it there or get just about anything and take back to your campsite to cook.
