Beaver Creek State Park offers horseback riding opportunities 45 miles from Wexford in East Liverpool, Ohio. The equestrian campground features 59 primitive sites on Sprucevale Road with basic tie-ups for horses. Access to the North Country National Scenic Trail directly connects to the camping area, allowing riders to explore wooded terrain along Beaver Creek with multiple water access points.
What to do
Trail riding: At Jefferson Lake State Park Campground, riders can access 18 miles of multi-use trails. "Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails!" notes reviewer Theresa Tittle R.
Fishing: The small lake at Jefferson Lake provides fishing opportunities near the dam. "Nice hiking trails and the lake is nice. Lots of geese and the expected goose poop. Plenty of solitude," reports Kellie A.
Historic exploration: Beaver Creek State Park connects riders to a historic pioneer village. "There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc). Really historical area to check out and hike around," explains Shay D.
Hiking: The Danner Primitive Campground offers riverside hiking trails. "I have not yet camped here but passed it on my hike the other day... This is a hike in or paddle in only campground. The shortest distance is about 2 miles from the trailhead at the Kennerdell bridge," shares Casey L.
What campers like
Spacious sites: The equestrian sites at Beaver Creek State Park Campground provide ample room for horse trailers. "It is an unbelievably spacious site under towering pine trees. The site sits back off the road and really makes you feel like you have the place to yourself," says Matt H.
Direct trail access: The connectivity between camping areas and riding trails is highly valued. "Direct access to the North Country National Scenic Trail and trails through main park," notes Tracy H. about Beaver Creek State Park.
Peaceful environment: Many campers appreciate the quiet atmosphere at horse campgrounds near Wexford. "Quiet little campground... Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping," comments Theresa Tittle R. about Jefferson Lake.
Historical surroundings: Hidden Hollow Campground at Fernwood State Forest offers a rustic camping experience. "Very well kept, completely free 1st come campground just outside the very small town of Bloomingdale, OH. Pit toilets and no source of safe, clean water anymore. Very quiet everytime I've camped there," explains Joe W.
What you should know
Water limitations: Jefferson Lake has water restrictions to note. "They also advertise a water filling station but neglected to mention that it is non-potable water so if that's something you're looking for then keep that in mind," warns Alex S.
Access roads: When driving to Beaver Creek with horse trailers, be aware of road restrictions. "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!" advises Bounding Around.
Limited facilities: Moraine State Park near Wexford offers limited equestrian camping opportunities. "Moraine State Park doesn't allow camping within the park and there is no campground affiliated with park. The one exception is along the North Country Trail, there are 2 rustic shelters that must be reserved through the park office," explains Greg K.
Seasonal conditions: Trail conditions for horseback riding can vary throughout the year. "Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available," shares Theresa Tittle R.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Families at Beaver Creek appreciate the proximity to recreation areas. "We got a site near the playground, which my 3 year old enjoyed. The campground wasn't busy and we had a lot of privacy," reports Matt H.
Wildlife viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities for wildlife observation. "The sky was dark enough to see far more stars than you'd see near any larger towns or cities. To cap it off, we laid in our tent dozing off to the sounds of owls and coyotes!" adds Matt H.
Level tent sites: For tent camping families, look for flat areas at Hidden Hollow Campground. "Most have fire pits a lot of level ground for tent camping pull in parking spots for RVs and campers a bathroom on site and two different trails to hike fishing minutes away," describes Justin T.
Water activities: The lake at Jefferson Lake State Park offers options for children. "Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek," notes Theresa Tittle R.
Tips from RVers
Electric site availability: Electric hookup sites are limited at many equestrian campgrounds near Wexford. "Only 5 electric sites. Very clean pit toilets. Well maintained campground. A few equine sites. Only 2 electric eq sites. Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord," explains Eddie at Jefferson Lake.
Water fill challenges: Plan for water needs in advance. "All water full up towers only have those spigots that are not threaded. Had to hold hose over spigot about 20 min to fill 35 gal. We were later told by staff the maintenance building had a threaded spigot," continues Eddie.
Cell service: Connectivity varies across the region's horse campgrounds. "AT&T 5g with 3 bars. Not very many restaurants or grocery nearby. Better make sure you have what you need bf you travel," advises Eddie.
