What to do
Fishing spots: Catch bass and sunfish at the small pond at Oil Creek Family Campground, located 32 miles from Branchton. A camper notes, "It is a stocked creek and it's great for both trout and bass fishing. Some parts of the creek also have a lot of northern water snakes (we saw 4 near the Blood Farm day use area) which was cool to see."
Disc golf: Play a 27-hole course through wooded terrain at Oil Creek Family Campground. One visitor shared, "We had a blast on the disc golf course, fishing in the pond, and playing ping pong. The kids had an awesome time in the pool for hours and running around with the other kids in the maze."
Primitive hiking: Access the North Country Trail at Beaver Creek State Park for day hikes or overnight trips. A reviewer wrote, "We go here for the Civil War Reenactment every couple years. It's a beautiful green forest with some historical buildings so it's a perfect site for that. There are nice hikes around the creek too."
What campers like
Spacious wooded sites: Two Mile Run County Park offers large camping sites with good separation. A camper mentioned, "Every site has plenty of room. Campground overall is quiet. And most if not all of the full hookups are pull throughs. But seems many of the tent sites are on grades."
Primitive tent camping: Danner Primitive Campground provides riverside sites for hikers and paddlers. A visitor explained, "There are 8 sites spread out along the edge of the river, some being closer together than others. They are level and clear, each with a new picnic table and nice fire rings with adjustable grates."
Remote equestrian access: While dedicated horse corrals aren't common, several parks accommodate trail riders. Starr Farm offers remote camping with space for horse trailers by arrangement. A visitor noted, "This campsite was close to an archery tournament for me. It is a huge campsite that is remote and peaceful."
What you should know
Limited water access: At some campgrounds, water must be carried in or filtered. At Danner Campground, "There is a spring for water which says to boil before drinking." Always check water availability before your trip.
Seasonal closures affect amenities: Most horse-accessible campgrounds near Branchton operate with reduced services from November through April. At Moraine State Park, winter camping is limited to backpackers using trail shelters.
Reservations required for groups: For equestrian camping groups, advance booking is essential. A Moraine State Park visitor explained, "The only other way to camp at Moraine is to reserve one of the two rustic group tenting areas--which are actually very pleasant despite the absence of showers."
