World's End Equestrian Campground offers rustic trail-based camping in Pennsylvania's Appalachian Plateau region at elevations between 800-1,800 feet. The area features mixed hardwood forests primarily consisting of oak, maple, hickory, and pine with steep valleys and ridge systems. Loyalsock State Forest encompasses over 114,000 acres with approximately 200 miles of hiking trails and 50 miles of bridle paths connecting to the campground.
What to do
Fishing access points: Several state forest campgrounds near Bloomsburg connect to waterways for fishing. At Tuscarora State Park Campground, "you can fish, swim and just relax! Pets allowed and don't have to be on a leash. Campsites are not even any where near each other," according to Jen R.
Goat petting opportunities: Ferryboat Campsites maintains a small animal area near the river. "There is a small goat petting zoo, with very friendly pigmy goats and the camp is extremely pet friendly as long as they are on a leash," notes Avery M. The site combines camping with easy access to family-friendly activities.
Paddling options: The Susquehanna River provides paddling routes accessible from several campgrounds. "We enjoyed our stay here — but mostly because we liked being right on the water. If it weren't for that this would not be the campground for us. The weather was hot so lots of tubing and fishing and kayaking in the river," reports melissa about her experience at Ferryboat Campsites.
What campers like
River ferry access: The historic ferry at Liverpool remains operational for over a century. "Rode on the Ferry every time I could. The campground is very nicely run and the campstore is great," writes Dorothy P. about Ferryboat Campsites. The working ferry offers a unique transportation experience directly from the campground.
Disconnection from technology: Remote forest locations provide technology breaks. At Tuscarora State Park Campground, "If you want to be disconnected, literally because there is no cell service, then this is the place for you. Best of all it is free! You just have to get a pass from the office," advises Jen R. Cell reception remains limited throughout many horse campgrounds near Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Spacious sites: Many equestrian-friendly campgrounds feature large sites. "The sites were super spacious and private. There was enough room for a full overlanding setup, three vehicles, a hammock, two dogs and a two person tent with plenty of room to spare," reports Paige H. about camping at Tuscarora.
What you should know
Permit requirements: Some state forest campsites require advance registration. For Tuscarora State Park Campground, "It is free to camp at one of the spots but you must call the respective ranger station ahead of time and let them know your car name ect and they issue you a permit free of charge," explains Zoltan P.
Potential flooding: Riverside campgrounds face periodic flooding concerns. "We were told the campground is susceptible to flooding, so check the weather when you come!" warns Robin about Ferryboat Campsites. Check river levels before reserving sites during spring and after heavy rain events.
Wildlife considerations: Bear activity exists in several forest areas near equestrian campgrounds. "There are bear in the region so be weary with your food. No noise pollution. No light pollution," advises Zoltan P. Proper food storage containers required at most backcountry and roadside sites.
Tips for camping with families
Cabin options: Alternative accommodations suit families with less gear. At Tuscarora State Park Campground, "The cabins and yurts have electricity and running water. They are great if you want the outdoor experience while getting the option of a bed," shares Tiffany K.
Swimming areas: Several campgrounds feature swimming access. "Beautiful lake surrounded by trails and includes beach area and playground," notes Mandy F. about the yurt camping area at Tuscarora State Park. Designated swimming areas generally operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Reservation timing: Peak season affects minimum stay requirements. "We reserved 3 of 4 yurts for first weekend in June...non peak season. Peak season requires minimum 5 day reservation, I believe," advises Mandy F. about camping regulations at Tuscarora.
Tips from RVers
Firewood limitations: Availability and cost of firewood varies significantly between campgrounds. "Wood at the camp store is incredibly expensive — they don't sell to nightly campers by anything more than the small bundle ($8)," reports melissa about Ferryboat Campsites. Consider bringing certified firewood from local sources within 50 miles.
Walk distances for amenities: Tent camping areas often require longer walks to facilities. "They offer the typical tent camping environment, mostly out in an open field and good walk to showers/head," notes Lawrence D. about the tent camping experience at Ferryboat Campsites. Bring portable water containers for extended tent sites.
Seasonal resident concentrations: Many campgrounds contain primarily long-term campers. "Most sites were occupied by permanent or seasonal residents. Bathrooms and grounds were very clean," observes Robin about the camping experience at Ferryboat Campsites. Weekend availability may be limited during summer months at popular locations.
