Fun at the Oregon coast
Located just south of Newport, this is a really great place to stay. Good spots to camp. Clean and spacious.
Located just south of Newport, this is a really great place to stay. Good spots to camp. Clean and spacious.
The South Beach State Park Campground is at the mouth of the Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon. The first thing you'll notice is the wind on the way in. Generally, north to south in the summers, the wind is strong, always strong, like 30 mph or more pretty much all the times according to the locals. It felt like it was raining, but it was just water being blown off the ocean. However, once you're in the campground you don't notice it at all since it is well protected by surrounding dunes and tree line.
There is a Tim Burton-esque trail system surrounding the camp leading out in all directions to the beach and bay. Some trails are blacktopped, some sand, and some horse accessible. Google maps struggled to get me to the correct entrance so pay a little more attention when arriving.
My visit was during Oregon Parks day so camping was free. The Hiker/Biker area is just inside the camp entrance across from the hospitality yurt where you can get hot tea, coffee, ice cream, wood bundles, stickers and Oregon Parks merchandise. The camping (all of it) area itself is pretty open with minimal privacy or separation from your neighbors, but everything is very clean and organized.
The campground was packed, and the RV/Tent area was essentially a parking lot. It seemed like a lot of families to come to the same place, the same weekend every year. However, it was a well regulated, and well behaved campground. The nice thing about this campground is the location. There are hiking trails, beach access, and it is close to all the amenities of Newport. Once you left the camp on a trail you could wander the trees without seeing anyone for awhile if you needed to get away.
Hiker/biker area had faux fencing built up to separate sites and wood platforms to get tents off the ground which I haven't seen in any other hiker/biker camps. The fences were a bit weird but made it easy to lock up a bike, hang some laundry and would a good stop if I were traveling with a hammock.
Amenities include:
Pro-Tip: In Newport, just across Yaquina Bay, is the Newport Bike Shop. It is one of the few bike repair shops along the coastal Oregon Route. If you get a $35 bike tune up you can take a break in their upstairs lounge with tv, wifi, fridge with beverages, and washer/dryer.

This campground is full of folks! It’s not remote if that is what you are looking for, but the location can’t be beat. They also have yurts and RV spots as well as tent camping. Great bike/walk path and paths to the ocean. Close to the aquarium and lighthouses. Lots to see and great town.
The campground was very crowded, but I liked the open space behind our campsite. The loop road was pretty narrow for navigating a large trailer or rv. Lots of trails for hiking to the beach that are mostly paved.
Just on the outskirts of Newport; right next to the ocean. Leave your campsite for the day and just explore what Newport has to offer.

Great location! Close to downtown and bayfront of Newport, but within walking distance to the ocean and hiking trails. Great for crabbing off the docks and fishing off the jetty!

Its a large campground and it's usually booked up year round so reserve in advance! The bathroom showers can be used by pacific coast hikers for a small fee. Bathrooms were clean. Weve camped and stayed in a yurt. Both were great. Checkin was a breeze for the yurt and all staff and volunteers were great.
This is a very large campground, with a mixture of RV/Trailer, tent, and yurt sites available, some with hookups. Large campground with a lot of families, etc. so not the quietest spot. But a great stay as it is central to trails and places to see in area. Trail from campground (multiple) lead right to the beach which is awesome. Full bathrooms and water onsite. They also have a little shop with some merchandise and snacks, ice, etc. They have bikes for rent (free i think) for guests there. They also have a free dump site available. This place books quickly so look in advance. I was able to book a spot a few nights before but not for more than a night and ended up moving around to different spots within the campground during my stay. Also good spot to bring dogs.
Much larger campground with several loops. Very popular for RVs with several camp hosts that patrol frequently. Overall nice spot with lots of amenities available, nice restrooms and showers!

Your perfect home-away-from-home to explore all that the central Oregon coast has to offer. Miles of beaches are within walking distance or a short drive. The Oregon Coast Aquarium (fee charged), Hatfield Marine Science Center (free), Rogue Brewing and Distillery, restaurants, shops, and a marina are only a mile or so down the road, all accessible via bicycle path from the campground. Newport has several neighborhoods to explore. Reservations are necessary during the summer. Open year-round. Sites for rv's, trailers, tents, yurters, and large groups Dump station on site. Restrooms with showers. Multiple campground hosts.
I'm from the Midwest and came for the ocean. Any time I can listen to the surf while I am sleeping in my tent I am happy. Short walk to beach. Reservations are a plus.

We camped here in May. It had little privacy and a lot of mosquitoes.
This is the second time staying in and reviewing this campground. The first was in a yurt with my 82 year old pop, this time was with my best friend and his family; including his 3 year old. This trip was quite a bit different than the first.
This time we stayed in the tent specific loop H, loop I is also a tent specific loop. These are the deepest loops into the park, with zero hwy noise, and are off the paved road which continues graveled to the sites. The sites in these loops are WAY better than the others. The others in this huge campground are mostly R.V. sites and are crammed in like sardines. They do offer power and water hookups, although I did not see sewer at those sites. The tent sites, on the other hand are way bigger and are more spread out, with a little more privacy. Each of the sites have standard fire rings w/ grills, picnic tables, with dish water troughs and water bibs nearby.
Last stay I noted how the pit toilets in the yurt loop were outdated; not so for the tent loop. It was a newer lodge looking complex, with gender specific, clean, flushing restrooms, with running water. They also have the single, private shower rooms, with hot water that are free to guests, not timed, and there is a small changing area in each of the shower rooms. These had not been cleaned as early as I used them, but I could tell they were well maintained.
Within the campground there are a few trails, some wooded, some to the beach, and some are ADA paved interpretative. We utilized the nice little trail behind the sites that spits you out right at the updated play structure and grounds. We took another to the beach, each of the access trails are easily located on the main drag and range from 1/3 to 1/2 miles to the beach. Easy for most and just short enough for the little ones. The day use area can also be accessed via the "Cooper ridge trail", or stop off at the disc golf course on the way.
The only downsides to this campground are, even though this is one of the biggest campgrounds on the coast with hundreds of sites; it does fill up fast in the busy season. With that being said, there are people everywhere. That's not a big deal unless you are looking to get away from the crowds and have a quieter experience. This is definitely geared towards families and tourists checking out the beautiful Oregon coast. The other was the fog horn blowing in the distance into the wee hours. At first not a big deal, kinda cool, but every 10 seconds. I don't recall this last time, so I imagine it is just in use when the fogs in and you actually get used to it after a while.
All said a good place to go on the Oregon coast and it is very centrally located with many tourist opportunities nearby, including: The Newport aquarium, old town Newport and the Rogue brewery. There are also many more just south of the campgrounds. Stop in for a good stay near the beach with plenty to keep you busy.

South Beach State Park is great for families. They have an excellent Junior Ranger program and 2-3 ranger lead activities per day each weekend throughout the summer. The Foghorn Amphitheater has a fire pit and screen for evening presentations. Big yurts and RV spots. Two play structures for big and little kids. Large paved paths to the beach make it great fir bikes, strollers, and wheechairs. The last bit of path to the accessible viewing area unfortunately was covered in sand and therefore not truly accessible. I recognize that it must be challenging to maintain however, it was really sad to see a once spectacular accessible viewing spot covered in four feet of sand. fair warning - lots of mosquitoes Otherwise this is a fantastic campground.

Tent sites don't have much privacy. And the walk to the beach is crazy long! It said 1/2 mile, but that was just the paved path. There was then at least another 1/4 through loose sand, uphill. That just takes you to the top of a hill where you can finally see the water. Then you have to walk down and all the way out.
Showers were great and clean.

This camp ground is clean and offers private shower stalls with lockable stalls. We did have a mesquites problem that’s why I didn’t give it a five but otherwise very nice.
Ggreat campground. Hosts are few and far between. Handicap shower was broken the whole winter (showerhead needed replaced) simple fix but never done.
The yurt sites are big enough for a tent also. Short walk to the beach. There are lots of things to visit within a short drive.

The sites we had were pretty large, so lots of space for tents! It was a very nice state park, a little bit of a walk to the beach. Probably about a half of a mile or so, but i really enjoyed the walk whenever i wanted to go to the beach.
Walking distance to the beach. Ranger led activities in the summer. Paved path to the jetty and from there access to the Mark Hatfield Aquatic Center, Rogue Brewery, Oregon Coast Aquarium, and Newport Harbor. Lots of things to do within a short drive. Check out the guided kayak trips offered through the forest service on Beaver Creek.
Stayed in the tent area, much quieter area. Large campground. Close to Newport. Nice walk to beach.
This is a huge campground with sites really close to the next one. If you are going to Newport to see the sites and tool around, this is a good spot to call home base, especially if you have a trailer/RV. If you're looking for a quiet, backwoods style campgound, this is not for you. If you stay in the H or I loops, you'll get a quieter, more private spot, which was nice. Bathrooms were clean, and there were lit pathways to help find them in the dark. Everything was really well kept, and the welcome host was super friendly. Close access to the beach is a bonus.

I spent a night here during a bike ride and this place was a bit overwhelming for a small tent camper but has every single thing you could ever want from a campground.
No complaints about the facilities, just a warning that the misquitos are really bad!
Its an easy walk to the beach to watch the sunset which I really enjoyed. They have wifi if you need it, and plenty of games to keep anyone entertained, if camping isn't already enough :)
After gallivanting through Central Oregon & Seattle, a coastal camping route along the way home (Sacramento, Ca) was sure to balance the 2,500mi road trip!
Having mapped out the trek in considerable advance, and after researching multiple state parks/ private campgrounds, South Beach State Park stood out for its proximity to the beach, surrounding nature trails, & it's shower facilities.
At first glance, using a reservation website with photos, the campsite view didn't impress much... Immediately upon pulling into the grounds, the park was gorgeous- lush green shrubs, subtle salty sea breeze, generous space between campsites, and the friendliest rangers ever encountered! Our site was flat, which is ideal when one's converted a vehicle into a camper (the Millennium Falcon is a Honda Element outfitted with a homemade, tri-folding loft bed platform).
For two road-weary travelers, access to the beach was just a 1/2 mile mellow nature path away. With the option of following a bark path through the campground- which eventually intersects with the multiple paved avenues to the grassy beach dunes- or merely sticking to the paved trail, the relaxing evening stroll was just right for stretching the legs before cooking dinner.
Overall, great firepits, flat tent sites, roomy between campers, excellently maintained facilities, easy access to dish cleaning/ dishwater disposal stations, beautiful park with miles of trails! Also, the hospitality station offers fat-bike rentals for beach riding, disc rentals for disc golf course, and local firewood for surprisingly reasonable prices.
Remember to always buy your wood on-site to deter the spread of invasive insects!

Honestly the 1st time camping here and wish I had done so sooner. Stayed In a yurt with my 82 year old father and he loved it! Clean and nicely set up grounds, a little populated, but for good reason. Short walk to beach from access trail and close to south jetty and Rogue brewery. Pit toilets could use an update, but that would be my only criticism of this campground. Awesome overall and very family friendly.
PROS:
CONS:

We picked this campground because the access to the beach was easier than most and the many trails in the area. This campground mainly caters to the RV crowd, with only two loops being set aside for tent camping. The sites are big but you are in full view of all your neighbors, the trees are sparsely scattered around.
There are flush toilets and showers, but we didn't use the showers and I can't speak to cleanliness of them. The hike to the beach is paved from the campground road and about a half mile. You are near the jetty and can see the ridge in Newport. I also think you can walk to the aquarium from the paved paths. I pprobably won't use this campground again, it is too busy and loud since there are no buffers between you and your neighbors. The ccampground is very dog friendly with hitch posts at the bathrooms and dog poop bag stations with trash cans regularly set around the area.

I have never had any issues or problems. It is just a very busy park, and yes there are mosquitoes, so be prepared. It is close to town, and activities which is great.
The sites were not at all private and the walks to the beach busy with kids on bikes and people shlepping stuff. The huckleberries were abundant and the restrooms clean. Lots of showers available and a serious family drinking party vibe with people renting multiple sites and making massive encampments. This place is crowded and full of all types of people. The rangers are mostly friendly and the firewood cheap. There's even a bike rental place but that just adds to the congestion. You kinda have to go there and just get into the flow of it....The beach was great but crowded also. It's a 1/2 mile walk to get to it--tsunami safety? I dunno why all the beaches of OR are setbacks, but this one's no different.
This is the second largest St park in Oregon. The place rocks. Mosquitos were bad this year so bring bug spray. Also make sure you book a head because it always is booked from June to October. Family friendly, and close to the beach. A mus to go.
had an awesome time with my family. great park, have to say we were fortunate to have not experienced the "mutant mosquitoes" that others had to deal with, actually i dont remember having an issue whatsoever with any bugs while there. the prices are really good compared to the other sites in the area. bathrooms/showers taken care of multiple times/day. park very clean. although greener grass wouldve been nice, but we didnt spend alot of time at the camp due to far too many activities within 30 min in any direction. would highly recommend this park to EVERYONE!!
