Oregon Mine Campground is located in Malheur National Forest, featuring forested terrain with a mix of trees and open spaces. Temperatures can range from lows in the 30s Fahrenheit during spring and fall to highs in the 80s during summer. Nearby attractions include the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, offering opportunities for exploration and hiking.

Adjacent to Murderer's Creek, this little campground is a great base camp for hunters. The campground is a nice area for those wishing to horse camp, a buck and pole corral is located adjacent to the campground. Visitors to the campground can enjoy bird watching, hunting and fishing in near by creeks. Hikers have options in the Cedar Grove Botanical area and Fields Peak trail. Visitors may get the opportunity to see one of the beautiful wild horses that reside in the area.

The Best Camping Near Mount Vernon, Oregon

There are wild horses in this area, but we didn’t get to see any! There is nice hiking in the area in this simple campsite in the middle of nowhere. There are toilets but no water (there’s a creek so boil or treat the water there), close to the road, and a good basecamp for hiking or horseback riding in the area. Big open wooded area to explore and camp in. I wouldn’t drive here in the winter or a wet spring. Lovely wildlife and plants here.

We enjoyed our trip so much we have been back several times! This is now one of our favorite camping places.

Great, quiet camping near wild horses! Gorgeous scenery! Great hiking! We had an amazing trip! We also got to watch a modern Cattle Drive! I think we accidentally timed our trip perfectly! And we not only saw Wild Horses, we woke up to them grazing in our camp ground! Note: no water, no garbage service, and no cell service. For us...no problem! We do carry an InReach Emergency communication device that we can always get an emergency message out... needed it here our 1st trip  here when our truck broke down. Easily fixed and we were back enjoying camping, so still a perfect trip.
