Fish Lake Campground is located on the flanks of Steens Mountain, within the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protective Area (CMPA). This area encompasses an extraordinary landscape with deep glacier carved-gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness, wild rivers, a rich diversity of plant and animal species, and a way of life for all who live there. At 7400-foot elevation and set among aspen stands and shore willows, Fish Lake Campground offers great opportunities for swimming, picnicking, cross-country hiking, and fishing the lake for stocked keeper trout planted by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Best Camping Near Frenchglen, Oregon

Clean campsite. Still moderatly far from the steens but not so far. Close to kiger gorge. Clean bathrooms. Wasnt full at 7pm on a saturday. Nice views of the lake. Bees in site 2-avoid

Nice camping in the Steens

Went in Mid June and there were maybe 3-4 campers in the whole park. A total of 18-20 sites. Some small for tents. A few large enough for campers. High mountain lake that appeared to have some decent fish population (2-3 fisherman, not camping). Still snow in spots at this time. No bugs, but blowing 20-30 at times. 

Quiet and secluded

The site was well maintained and can get very cold at night in late May and October, below freezing.  Also to note the loop does not open until roughly first week of July and depends on the work required on the road when the snow melts.

We went in May and enjoyed seeing only a few people up there and chatting the Burns BLM staff who gave the kids a cool packet of information about the nature, a quite detailed packet.

Overall, if you like to hangout next to a small lake and stay up high, it’s a nice spot. At the beginning of the road there is a larger campsite that is flat with grass, much warmer and better for larger RV’s

Great high altitude location

Great campspot. Came here 4th of July weekend and camped in Alvord first night and decided to camp somewhere else the next night.  70-80% of the campsites were open.  Large campsites and private.  It was a great find.
