What to do
Trail riding access: AuSable Chasm Campground offers proximity to diverse trail systems. "I wish I had my bike!!! I didn't know that this was a biking campground and there were SO MANY trails. Made the most of them with running, but overall, a fantastic campground," notes Rebecca Y.
Swimming and water activities: Branbury State Park Campground features lake access with rentals available. "Spacious sites, hiking trails, biking trails, nice beach and grounds. Fishing, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and paddle board rentals," states J L. The park maintains a designated swimming area with amenities for day use visitors.
Local attractions: AuSable Chasm Campground provides convenient access to natural features. "Terrific location to hike the different trails of ausable chasm. Good sized site with electric and water. Shady but also had sun to dry our shoes from the raft tour," reports YM C. The campground sits directly across from the chasm attraction with hiking, rafting and climbing options.
What campers like
Clean facilities: AuSable Chasm Campground maintains well-kept restrooms. "Bathrooms and showers weren't too bad, the doors are always kept open which means bugs but not too buggy as they are cleaned daily," shares YM C. Multiple reviewers note the cleanliness of facilities across campgrounds.
Spacious sites: Frontier Town Campground offers generously sized camping areas. "We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It's really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean," reports Chelsea B.
Natural features: Branbury State Park Campground incorporates natural elements within camping areas. "The site was so scenic with a little waterfall and stream nearby. A five minute hike- though it is quite a rocky, boulder-y hike- from the sites leads to a small river and swimming hole," explains Nicole E.
What you should know
Seasonality considerations: Horse camping near Keene Valley typically operates from late spring through fall. Branbury State Park Campground runs "Memorial Day weekend to Columbus Day weekend," according to park information. Insect activity peaks in early summer, particularly June, with cooler nights even during summer months.
Supply availability: Remote locations require advance planning. "Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it," advises Chelsea B. about Frontier Town Campground. Most campgrounds offer firewood for purchase but limited access to other supplies.
Wildlife awareness: Black bears inhabit the region requiring proper food storage. "Just make sure you put your food and trash away- there are black bears in the area!" warns Nicole E. about Branbury State Park. Follow posted guidelines for food storage at all campgrounds.
Tips for camping with families
Activity options: Branbury State Park Campground offers educational opportunities. "Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities. A large playground. Volleyball and horseshoe pits," shares J L. The variety of activities accommodates different age groups.
Site selection: Choose sites based on specific needs and proximity to amenities. "There was plenty of space between sites so it didn't feel like you were on top of each other. Bathrooms are flushing compost. However, there are only four showers for the whole campground," notes Nicole E. about Branbury State Park.
Water features: Sites near water provide recreational options. "Across the street from the campground was access to the lake with plenty of grassy areas to hang out. And beautiful sunsets at night!" describes Nicole E. about Branbury State Park. Water access points vary in depth and safety features.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: AuSable Chasm Campground offers various utility connections. "We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van," explains Lee D.
Site dimensions: Frontier Town Campground provides ample space for large rigs. "I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road," notes Butch K.
Access roads: Road conditions affect larger vehicles. "The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn't that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining," observes Lee D. at AuSable Chasm Campground. Most campgrounds maintain dirt or gravel internal roads requiring cautious driving.
