What to do
Hiking trails: El Caso campground provides access to scenic trails through meadows and forests. "We hiked towards the lake right from camp and it was gorgeous - a little creek meandering through trees and meadows," notes Travis D. about El Caso.
Stargazing opportunities: Lyman Lake State Park offers exceptional night sky viewing away from city lights. Dave N. mentioned, "Nice viewing of stars at night," making it an ideal spot for astronomy enthusiasts visiting the Lyman Lake State Park Campground.
Explore petroglyphs: Take short trails to view ancient rock art. "Well maintained trail system that offers amazing views of the sandstone rock formations and petroglyphs. There is a rock squeeze in the trail too," shares Jessica S. about her experience at Lyman Lake.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: El Caso campground features well-spaced camping areas. "Great little meadows between camp areas under Ponderosa pines. There is a vault toilet and big camp fire rings but no picnic tables," according to Travis D., who appreciated the El Caso camping experience.
Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention the maintenance of bathrooms and shower facilities. "Bathrooms and showers are super clean and well maintained. There is only one designated bathhouse building so if you park far, you'll be walking a ways," reports Brodie D. about Lyman Lake State Park.
Weather considerations: Spring camping offers moderate temperatures but variable conditions. "It was spring break and we drove through a blizzard to find ourselves under clear skies at Quemado Lake... The weather caught up to us and we had about four to five inches of snow fall on us overnight. It was beautiful," shares Santino about El Caso campground.
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Connectivity is restricted in the Quemado area. "No internet service and poor phone reception (T-Mobile) which was a little issue for us as we are traveling cross country," reports Penélope F. about her stay at Lyman Lake State Park.
Seasonal availability: Some campgrounds have limited operating seasons. "There are 5 camping areas within this campground. This area had two sites that could accommodate a travel trailer or motorhome," notes Brad P. about El Caso, adding "Quemado Lake is a short drive down the mountain."
Wind conditions: Afternoon winds can be significant in this high desert region. Roger W. mentions "very cool nights" at El Caso, while other campers note that winds typically die down in the evening.
Tips for camping with families
Cabin options: Consider cabin accommodations for family comfort. "Stayed at Elk Cabin for 2 nights. Cabins are very nice and clean," shares Eny O. about their experience at Lyman Lake State Park.
Campground amenities: Check which facilities are open during your visit. Brad P. advises, "There is a toilet which was clean but not well stocked. Make sure to bring toilet paper. There is a dump and water station a mile away. 5.00 charge to dump."
Water activities: Lakes provide recreation opportunities during warmer months. William C. notes, "Decent fishing, although the lake was flooded and murky while we were there... It likely could be a really good fishing spot under ideal conditions."
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Full-hookup sites are available but limited. "FHU available, spacious sites, blacktop to park your rig. Some pull thru site, mostly back ins, large sites," explains Dave N. about the Lyman Lake State Park Campground.
Dump station access: Plan your waste management in advance. JB L. mentions that "Bathrooms and showers are on site and several dumpsters are nearby to get rid of trash. The on site store sold firewood, bait, fishing and boating gear, snacks and souvenirs."
Reservation requirements: Some campsites are first-come, first-served while others can be booked. Roger W. notes El Caso sites are "First come first serve" with usage during their visit being "1/4 full."
