This rustic style campground has 12 sites set at the base of southern New Mexico's tallest mountain. A portion of the site is designed for Group Camping. Three Rivers is a great place to go to get away from the crowds and is located at a much lower elevation than our other campgrounds (around 5000'). From here you can access the Three Rivers trailhead (T44) into the White Mountain Wilderness is located. Access to the site and the roads throughout the site are all well maintained dirt roads. Don't miss the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site on the way in or out. ACTIVITIES Camping Hiking Horseback Riding Picnicking: Smokey Bear Ranger District picnic area.
Located on the outskirts of Ruidoso, Cedar Creek provides a wonderful space for groups visiting for the day or staying overnight. With a picnic shelter and three group campsites, the recreation area is ideal for an outing in Lincoln National Forest. A popular pastime is is hiking and mountain biking along the scenic multi-use trails adjacent to the Sam Tobias Memorial Group Campground. There are opporunities to see a number of different wildlife, including Mule deer and Elk in the area.
Hiking and biking are among the most popular activities here, with options like the T90 fitness Trail which extends 1.3 miles and includes exercise stations. Bilking trails T120 A-D and T121 A& B are also nearby. Also we have an expert-only downhill mountain bike trail, located near the water tower to the east of the Campgrounds. The trail ends at the picnic area. Dogs must be kept on leash at all times while hiking. Dogs are not allowed on the Fitness trail.
Cedar Creek is perched along its namesake, Cedar Creek at a 7,000 foot elevation. Lincoln National Forest, located in south-central New Mexico, is most notable as the birthplace of the original Smokey Bear.
Ruidoso is a delightful town with quaint shops, restaurants and art galleries. If picnickers wish to camp overnight, they can head to Sam Tobias Memorial Group Campground.

I was looking to get away from the heat in Albuquerque and maybe even do a little fishing. I picked a site next to the upper river (Rio Bonito). The water was clear and moving, but no sign of any fish. The river is more of a creek (expected for New Mexico), but still pretty. It was barely visible from my camp, but just a short hike away. No ATT or Verizon cell service at my site, but I did find a weak signal up near the office. The wifi was a struggle. It was barely adequate the first day, but absolutely miserable the second day. I could easily connect to their router, but constantly got an error of “no internet service” and had to log off and on several times. I had limited shade at my site, but thankfully the AC kept the trailer cool enough, as it was nearly 90 degrees outside. The hosts were very nice and the park is kept pretty clean. No tents allowed, though.

Stayed here back in May 2020. It's on BLM land so no fee, first-come first-serve. Very small little stretch just off the side of the road with a bathroom, tables, and small firepits. Also some concrete slabs to put your tent on if you want, including some sites with covered slabs to keep the sun / rain off you, or to hang a hammock on. Not every site has those though, and in be careful with the firepits, this area is quite dry and the pits are not well-protected (see my photos). Definitely check local status of having campfires if you're headed here.
Nice because it is easy to get to, will 100% work in a pinch, and is quiet, especially if you have it all to yourself. According to the website it is near a cave system, something I didn't realize at the time (I suppose the name was a pretty big clue, but hey, I'm nothing if not dense in moments...).
All in all, nothing particularly amazing, but functional and comfortable. And hey, if those caves are something special, maybe the proximity of this campground pushes it up into 4 or 5 star territory. Alas, I'll have to find out next time I'm in that part of the country.
GuideWe tried to stay at this site on a Tuesday in late May, all 3 spots were filled. So we continued down the road where there are lots of other dispersed options just right off Cave Canyon Road. No facilities just rock fire pits. Lots of access to trails (hiking, biking, and horse access only). There's a good map of the trails located at Fort Stanton if you happen to visit there before heading here definitely take a picture. It gets hot here starting in May and not much shade available. As a side note the caves located just by the CG are closed.

GuideFor motorhomes and big rigs the three main campsites are really the only ones I would recommend camping in.
There are some small boondocking campsites further up cave canyon trail road but the road was pretty rough in spots.
Cell phone service was great in the campground and we got good data speeds.
The vault toilet was clean and there's a few garbage cans spread out the campground.
In October there were other campers there but there was an open site every day.
Some jeeps and OHV's went by during the day but it was still a great place to camp that was quiet at night.
This is the free campground. There's one that costs money with hookups a few miles away on the road that leads to Fort Stanton.
GuideSecluded camping about 1.5 miles in from US Rt 380! On BLM land, the dirt road in is wash boarded in spots, but hey it's free. Three sites with room for bigger rigs, have picnic tables under shelters and trash cans. There are also pit toilets. Moreover, there's undeveloped dispersed sites further in, but high clearance vehicles is advised. Great Verizon cell service. We were there in November, and it got cold at night (one night down to 14 degrees F), during the day temps were in the mid 60's...so be prepared for cold nights and comfortable days.
LegendIt is a small but very nice campground. No electricity water or sewer but trash toilets and privacy. Would be hot in high summer and cold right now end of November but if you have a generator and can be off the grid what a cute place to be.

GuideJust returned from a 5 day stay. We got escorted to our spot and they helped guide us in. The staff are very helpful and if you need something, they will be more than happy to accommodate you. The grounds are very clean and well maintained. There is a small creek that runs along the grounds and nice spots to sit and chill out. There are horseshoe pits, fenced in area for dogs to do their business, playground for kids (needs a little more upgrade including a slide, climbing things, etc.). The interaction with your neighbors was more than enjoyable. They were helpful and were a joy to chat with. I could not say enough about our stay there.
GuideThis campground has it all. Beautiful surroundings, not far from downtown shopping in Ruidoso, most helpful hosts on site. My husband was not in the best of health when we went. The hosts helped him set up, with them doing the majority of the work, in the rain. The campground is pet friendly, has an enclosed run where you can take them off the leash for a bit, also has several locations with poop bags available. This seems to be a super secure location as hosts are on duty 24/7. No one comes into the campground without stopping at the office and checking in, anyone failing to do this, will be followed in and information gathered or asked to leave. Sites, once vacated are gone over with a fine tooth comb to make sure Nothing is left behind, the fire pits are cleaned, and everything is in order for the next camper. There are horseshoe pits and sand volleyball available for entertainment. Showers and laundry facilities are available and kept super clean. Rio Bonito flows along the side of the campground
ScoutHas been our number 1 go to location for almost 10 years now. Started in tents...then pop up...now a travel trailer. The park hosts are always extremely friendly and helpful. When they greet you by name upon stepping out of your vehicle... that tells you a lot. My family and I will continue enjoying our getaways to BHRV till we can't no more! Love it!

ScoutThere is NO River, small stream in a ditch. LIE# 2. Internet indicates SHOWERS. However if your camper has a shower ACCESS TO SHOWERS. DENIED!!! Also No fires allowed ! Highway noise drowns out any Peaceful sounds. In truth: NO Amenities… play in the ditch or stay in your camper.
TravelerWe camped here because it looked pretty on Google. It's a quaint little campground and we were lucky to get a spot on the river. No cell service but, wifi is strong! It's super quiet. Note that if you have a shower in your rv, you will not get access to showers! The girl that checked us in was nice enough to give me the code as I refuse to shower in our rv bc it's so small.

Campground is ok. Not a lot going on, no pool, exercise room or anything like that. There is a decent laundry facility. Roads and sites are gravel. Hook ups are good, water is extremely hard. Some sites are very close together. A lot of mule deer and elk roaming around. AT&T was good with 3 bars of 4g. Verizon was spotty with 1 bar of 4g. Paid &600.0o/month plus electric. Electric is charged at amount used plus a $25 "meter fee". Wasn't very happy about that. Would only return if I had no choice.

I have been to this campground many time. It's one of my favorites because it's open all year! It is 4 miles from the Three Rivers Petroglyph National Park and the portal to the White Mountain Wilderness area in the Lincoln National Forrest. This area is great for car/RV camping....but also great for backpack camping. My husband and I have done both several times.

RangerMy family and dog tent-camped at Three Rivers campground on Labor Day weekend 2014. There were shaded spots. The water in the river was running and fresh. There were a couple nice bathing holes. We tried to hike up to the peak but we ascended halfway and turned back. In Aug. 2018, I climbed the trail to the peak but camped 2/3 up the mountain; so it took me 2 days to ascend and descend, which was harder. Pretty place with many conifer trees.
GuideThree Rivers Campground finally reopened "for good" at the start of 2024 after some stops and starts due to fires around the area.
This place is unique as it is one of the few places you can camp on the Western edge of Sierra Blanca / the White Mountain Wilderness. Tons of hiking opportunities with 3 separate trails originating at the campground.
Well maintained dirt roads lead up to the campground. There's a single spot where water flows over the road but it was only an inch or so deep and padded with concrete.
$6 per vehicle per night. Hosts present and active. Very nice couple watching over the sites.
Please tread lightly, leave no trace, and be gentle with the wilderness. This place has gone through a lot of fire related hardships.
TravelerThis was a really nice spot we stumbled upon. It's about 13 miles off the 54 on BLM land. The road was smooth (though gravel most of the way). It was also super quiet since it was so far away from the road. The actual camp was in the trees and great views of the surrounding mountains. Each spot has a table, fire pit, and gazebo. There are also a few trailheads at the back of camp. The only downside was that it cost $15.

We stayed 2 nights here in October and really enjoyed our stay. The owners are super friendly and helped us into our spot. The campground is surrounded by fields with a creek bed on the back side and horses on another. It was very quiet and dark enough at night to see the stars light up the sky. Wish we could've stayed longer. Highly recommended.
