Camp-A-Way Campground and Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area provide accessible glamping options 20-30 minutes from Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. Located in the eastern plains region at approximately 1,500 feet elevation, the area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and cold winters that drop below freezing. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with varying amenities during winter months when temperatures can dip into single digits.
What to do
Fishing at Branched Oak Lake: The 1,800-acre reservoir at Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area offers diverse fishing opportunities throughout the year. "This lake is a great place for boats! If you're looking to take out a tube or just power around this area is good as it is larger than most lakes around Lincoln/Omaha," notes Kwin K. The lake contains multiple species including walleye, bass, and catfish.
Water activities beyond swimming: Kayaking opportunities abound at Lake Wanahoo where paddlers can explore the shoreline. "Great fishing and kayaking lake! Bike path goes all the way around the lake," shares A H. The calm waters are ideal for beginners and families with small craft.
Trail exploration: Platte River State Park features several miles of hiking trails suitable for various skill levels. "I love Platte River State Park; there are accommodations for every type of camper - cabins, RV, privative - hell they even have teepees!" shares Jared J. "On top of the excellent camping offered, they have a wealth of amazing hiking/biking trails that traverse through some amazing scenery."
What campers like
Clean shower facilities: Camp-A-Way Campground receives high marks for their immaculate facilities. "The bathrooms were super clean and have locks with code to keep them safe. The shower head could use replacing, but it was a hot shower, so we appreciate it," notes Heather A. Many glamping sites near Pleasant Dale feature recently renovated shower buildings.
Family-friendly activities: On-site recreation options keep children entertained. "This destination was so fun! Sites are shaded and spacious. Awesome playground, pool, water slide and more! Super cute place to stay with family," says Samantha S. about Camp-A-Way. Activities typically run from May through September with reduced options during shoulder seasons.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area provides excellent wildlife observation opportunities. "Great place to bird watch and fish," states Kathie O. Morning and evening hours offer the best chances to spot native birds and small mammals along the shoreline.
What you should know
Highway noise considerations: Some glamping sites close to Pleasant Dale have nearby highway access, which creates ambient noise. "The highway is so close you can see the cars going by. Its extremely loud and constant highway sounds. If you are in a camper or RV, it probably doesn't make much difference, but in a tent, it took away a bit of the magic of camping for us," reports Heather A. about Camp-A-Way.
Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during summer months. "Plan ahead and reserve a spot or go early in the week otherwise you won't get a pad!!!" advises Jen K. about Branched Oak Lake. Weekend spots typically require booking 3-6 months in advance.
Weather preparedness: The open landscape at newer facilities means limited protection from elements. "We primary visit Lake Wanahoo for fishing as the large lake is well stocked. They provide tent and RV camping. However, there is almost no wind break or shade throughout the area. High winds or extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on overnight trips," cautions Carly P.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Cottonwood Campground at Two Rivers SRA features dedicated play areas for children. "Two rivers is my favorite Nebraska hidden gem! The state Rec Park is by both the Elkhorn and Platte rivers, thus it's name, Two Rivers," shares Morgan W. "A swimming beach for kids, and river access when the river is low enough."
Age restrictions for amenities: Check facility policies before booking. "We booked hoping we could use the spa, only to find out when we got here, no kids under 5 can use it. We have a 3 year old, so we had to pass," notes Heather A. Many glamping facilities near Pleasant Dale have specific age minimums for certain amenities.
Off-peak visits for quieter experience: Consider weekday or shoulder season stays for a more relaxed experience. "We went in the off season so we had a lot of space to ourselves," shares Jayden K. about Branched Oak Lake. Late September through early May typically sees fewer visitors and more availability.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Pine Grove RV Park & Campground, positioning matters for comfort. "Sites are very close together. And pretty noisy right next to I-80," reports Robert R. Request sites further from main roads when making reservations.
Local provisioning options: Small towns near glamping sites offer specialty food options. "The town of Wahoo has a cool butcher shop, so I always plan to pick up steaks, hot dogs or other grillable items for one night's dinner," recommends A H. regarding their Lake Wanahoo visits.
Dump station logistics: Plan ahead for sanitation needs. "To get to the dump station you have to leave the campground, get on the highway and drive to the opposite side of the lake to the day use area," explains Pat V. about Lake Wanahoo. Some facilities require driving several miles to access dump stations.
