What to do
Horseback riding trails: Charles Waters Campground provides excellent access to equestrian trail systems. "Nice little campground in the Bitterroot Valley. It seemed that there were as many dogs as people in the campground... There are some nice hiking and horseback riding trails across the road, and there is a forest road that goes all the way to the top of the mountains with picnic tables to watch the sunset or sunrise," notes Annie C. from Charles Waters Campground.
Fly fishing: Rock Creek offers renowned trout fishing opportunities close to camping areas. "Camping is tight by fly fishing is very good. Freindly people with great food. Beautiful country," shares Jack T. from Ekstrom's Stage Station Campground.
Waterfall hiking: Holland Lake area features accessible waterfall trails suitable for all skill levels. "The hike to the Holland Falls is short but totally worth it! Clean lake perfect for swimming and paddleboarding," reports Talia H., who appreciated the family-friendly nature of the destination.
Ghost town exploration: Several historic mining towns are within driving distance of Bonner area campgrounds. "Beautiful views here along the Clark Fork River with lots of things to do in the nearby area including visiting the Garnet Ghost town, Philipsburg, Deer Lodge, Anaconda, Butte and Missoula," shares Jason A.
What campers like
Wilderness access: Lake Elsina provides a more primitive horse camping experience with direct trail connections. "Absolutely gorgeous undeveloped area! If you can stand the hordes of mosquitos and constant trail of hikers coming through the area hiking to Lake Dinah," notes BriAnne M. from Lake Elsina - Dispersed.
Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained equestrian facilities. "Very nice place to go for a quick overnight camping trip. The bathrooms were clean, as well as the sites. The only down side was the the trash services weren't ready yet, so make sure to pack it out if you're there in early may," advises Thomas C.
Private campsites: Tree cover at many campgrounds creates natural separation between sites. "Sites are close-ish together but very private because of the tree cover. The creekside sites are especially lovely," explains Jess W., highlighting the natural screening that provides privacy.
Water recreation: Holland Lake Campground offers multiple water activities alongside horse camping options. "This is one of my favorite spots in Montana. The lake itself is gorgeous, and the camping spots are beautiful. There's even one site on the island, if you brought a canoe or kayak, as we did!" shares Anna B.
What you should know
Bear awareness: Both black and grizzly bears frequent the Bonner area regularly. "There are both black and grizzly bears that frequent this area daily, so be very careful with your food, and bear aware when hiking. My last stay was only 2 nights, and I ran into two bears, one that strolled right by my trailer," warns Carmen H.
Insects: Mosquitoes can be problematic, particularly in early summer. "The mosquitoes were pretty bad in early July," reports Carl H., so pack plenty of repellent for both humans and horses.
Cell service: Most wilderness camping areas have limited or no connectivity. "The closest cell service is just outside of Seeley Lake," notes Sara D., making it important to download maps or bring physical copies for navigation.
Seasonal closures: Bearmouth RV Park offers one of the few year-round options for horse travelers in the region when many wilderness campgrounds close. "We stopped here for one night on our way to Olympic National Park and I'm so glad we did. The grounds are SO well maintained and the owners are super nice," shares Morgan N.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds offer playgrounds and recreational areas. "We had a really nice couple of mid week nights here. We couldn't get two consecutive nights in a row so had to move spots, but it wasn't a big deal. Our daughter braved a chilly swim and there were lots of dirt roads and little trails for the strider bikes," explains Sara D.
Waterfall accessibility: Select trails are suitable for children while still offering scenic rewards. "There is a beautiful waterfall that is visible from the camp ground and is a fairly easy hike too," notes Sara C., though she cautions supervision is needed near the falls.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "This is a great location along the Clark Fork river. Staff was very friendly. Sites were well maintained and sufficient. Interstate noise and the occasional train whistle would keep me from using the facility for nothing more than an overnight stop," advises Tadd B.
Tips from RVers
Horse trailer parking: Out Post Campground offers easier access for large horse trailers than some wilderness sites. "Easy little spot to set up for the night," notes Cody L., making it convenient for overnight stays while hauling horses.
Site selection: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain that may challenge larger rigs. "Paves roads, large sites, (sloped, not level) very friendly hosts, water spigots throughout, pit toilets, cement picnic tables," shares MT Nesters 4, highlighting the need to check for level parking.
Arrival timing: Campgrounds with equestrian facilities fill quickly during peak season. "We had to move spots, but it wasn't a big deal," explains Sara D., suggesting mid-week arrival for better site availability.
Mobile services: Some RV parks offer unique amenities for longer horse camping stays. "They offer a 'honey pot' mobile dump station where they come pump your sewage, sometimes offering a free dump for stays of a week or longer," explains Reames C., detailing a convenient service for extended stays.
