Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground offers bridle trails for horseback riding enthusiasts, with miles of dedicated paths winding through its 2,600 acres near Laingsburg, Michigan. The campground provides electric hookups at most sites with asphalt pads suitable for visitors bringing horses. While the park does not feature dedicated horse corrals on-site, riders appreciate access to the extensive trail system that accommodates equestrian use. Bathrooms and showers are well-maintained, though the distance from campsites to the beach area requires a significant walk or short drive. The DNR staff enforces quiet hours and campground rules consistently. Several sites near Alma, Michigan are featured on The Dyrt.

The park trail system connects directly to the equestrian paths without requiring trailer transport after arrival. Riders access approximately 10 miles of designated horse trails that traverse wooded areas and open fields throughout the park. Portable corrals or highlines are permitted at standard campsites, though space may be limited at some locations. Water access is available through spigots scattered throughout the camping loops. During peak season, particularly weekends and holidays, reservations are essential as the campground fills quickly with both equestrian and non-equestrian campers. Fall visits offer less crowded trails and comfortable riding conditions. Some trails may become muddy during rainy periods, affecting accessibility for horses and riders.

      Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

I know another great Michigan State Park

What can I say, I love the Michigan State Parks.  I find they are the best, Sleepy Hollow is not different and it has so many things to do.  I would advise if you want to camp there on a weekend to make reservations well in advance.  We stay here because there are only 2 campgrounds in the Lansing East Lansing Area this being one of them and the other does not have all full hook ups and charges more.  When we visit our daughter at Michigan State University this is the place we stay,  20 - 30 minutes into the University depending upon the traffic.

It has large wooded sites only electric but you can fill up the water at the dump station.  Each site has a picnic table and Fire ring.  Each campsite has a asphalt pad. They sell fire wood at the campground office. Bring what you need or you can go into St. johns to the Kroger or Walmart.  they have 2 main camping loops with 2 loops in each of the main loops and a shower restroom in each main loop.  The restrooms are very clean and kept up.  I love the showers  hot water and for me that is hot and great pressure, I could shower all day.  Sure beats our shower in the RV.

The State Park is on Ovid Lake and it is a beautiful lake, great for fishing, canoeing, paddle boards, kayak, and swimming. they have a shelter for you if you have a big party.

They also have a group campsite and a picnic area for large groups. d You can also bring your horses go to the Equestrian area and unload and get on the trail.

You can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards.  They also have a great play ground for the kids and a fishing pier. Bring Bikes or just hike on the trails and head down to the beach.

The path is nicely groomed. The bea h is a long way from the parking lot a d there is no beach access from camp. Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

      Disappointing

This was our last stop on a trip where we camped in 6 different Michigan State Parks. This may be an older camp or the DNR was trying to save money when it was built. Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension. We tried several lots and couldn’t reach any of the outlets. We finally met a couple who saId they had extensions at the office. So, we finally got set up with an extension cord from the camp office and decided to walk to the beach. Our site was adjacent to the path leading to the beach so we figured we could use a little walk. The path led to another path that led to a parking lot for the beach. After crossing the parking lot we still had to cross a large yard/park that finally opened onto the beach on this small lake. It was all very scenic, but we weren’t expecting a major hike to get to the beach. Showers are nice. They also have a neat ice cream vending machine that I had to check out for scientific purposes only. For a Michigan state park we were quite disappointed.

      Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

      Fun but don’t party

Awesome campground, horse trails available, volleyball nets, beach, and trails! Don’t get too rowdy however because the DNR constantly patrols the area.

      Double RR Ranch RV Resort

      Lots to do

There is a river to explore and we always get a riverfront site. Rivers are just fun for fishing, throwing stones, canoeing. There is a campstore, Firepits, large trees, they do hayrides for kids, too. We enjoyed a reasonable trailride on horses thru a shallow part of the river. Very easy for inexperienced riders and kids. It is close to a town to get take out food if it rains. There are some larger vacation lodges to rent that ars nestled away in the woods, and a bunkhouse with rentals. My husband liked the golf course that came with renting spot. Seen lots of wildlife. Very relaxing time in our pop up not too far from Grand Rapids.

    Guide to Alma

Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground, near Laingsburg, Michigan, provides equestrian camping facilities across its 2,600-acre property. The park sits in a rural setting where rolling farmland meets forested areas, creating a landscape ideal for horseback riding. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, while summer averages range from 70-85°F. Many campground sites accommodate both horse trailers and camping setups.

    What to do

Trail riding year-round: The park maintains approximately 10 miles of bridle trails through varied terrain. These paths connect directly to campsites, allowing riders to access trails without trailering horses after initial setup. "Loved this place! Quiet, beautiful nature trails and lake," notes Laikyn C. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Lake Ovid offers productive fishing for various species. "Fishing is good here for some largemouth bass, and huge blueguils," reports Michael P. The lake permits non-motorized boats and electric motors only, maintaining a calm environment for anglers.

Seasonal trail activities: Beyond horseback riding, trails accommodate hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. "Fun backpacking trails best trails close to state capital. Fishing, boating, disc golf, horse and bike trails, geocaching available," explains Jacob B. about the diverse recreation options at Sleepy Hollow.

    What campers like

Private, spacious sites: Many campsites offer good separation from neighbors with natural borders. "Our site backed up to trees and I can't recall seeing our neighbors to the left or right," shares Amy D. about her experience at Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.

Clean facilities: The park maintains modern amenities despite its rural setting. "Bathrooms are clean, paved roads and grass sites," notes Ricky C. about the well-maintained infrastructure that supports both equestrian and standard camping.

Water recreation access: While the main lake requires a walk from the campground, it provides recreational opportunities. "We did go for a short paddle on (C) Ovid Lake," mentions Amy D., highlighting water activities beyond horseback riding that campers can enjoy during summer months.

    What you should know

Electrical limitations: The power infrastructure may present challenges for some campers. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension," explains Nick W. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground. The campground office often provides extension cords upon request.

Distance to amenities: The beach area sits relatively far from campsites. "Nice beach but you have to walk a short distance to get there," notes Ricky C. This walk can take 15-20 minutes from most sites, so bringing bicycles helps navigate the park efficiently.

Site drainage issues: Some sites experience poor drainage during wet periods. "The firepit was surrounded by water, and our site (142) really only had dry space for one tent," reports Mike W. about conditions after rainfall. Request elevated sites when booking if camping during typically rainy periods.

    Tips for camping with families

Halloween events: The park hosts special seasonal programming that appeals to families. "Every year they put together an awesome Halloween trick or treat weekend, but be sure to book the day of six months before because otherwise you will not get a site," recommends Stephanie C. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.

Playground access: Recreational facilities for children require planning to reach from camping areas. "There is a beach and playground, but it is quite the walk from the campground. Plan to drive or bike ride if you have trouble walking long distances," advises Stephanie C.

Nearby family alternatives: For families seeking additional recreational options near Alma, other campgrounds offer structured activities. At Duke Creek Campground, "Train rides, Pool, Scavenger hunt, trails, bike rides, there just weren't enough hours in the day! We should have reserved an entire week!" exclaims Becky P. about the family-friendly programming.

    Tips from RVers

Extension cord requirements: RV campers need to plan for electrical access. "Be sure to bring at least 100 feet of extension chord if you want electricity, because the power ports are not as accessible from some areas," warns Nathan V. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.

Air conditioning considerations: During hot weather, electrical capacity can become an issue. "Because we didn't get any shade from the nearby trees we had to run the ac which is unusual for us in Michigan. The park needs to upgrade the electrical system as this was putting a strain on their electrical equipment," notes Amy D. about summer camping conditions.

Site selection guidance: When reserving, specifically request sites with adequate space for equestrian setups. Portable corrals require flat areas, and sites vary considerably in usable space. During peak summer periods, early reservations are essential due to the popularity of equestrian camping near Alma, Michigan.
