The Best Camping Near Wetmore, Michigan

The Munising / Pictured Rocks KOA. The least impressive KOA I have ever been to. The campsites are incredibly close. See that orange hammock? It’s not ours and is actually on the neighboring site. The sites are all dirt. Not Gravel. Not Grass. Dirt. It is going to be an extremely messy week of camping. The camp store is sparingly stocked, a few essentials, but nothing extra. The big upside is the heated pool. It was very comfortable even in the shade of the trees on a very windy day. Our camper is maybe thirty feet away from our neighbors and we face each other. The hookups are every other site so this forces the campers to always face each other. Overall a very underwhelming campground.

We went in September and it was still mildly warm, bugs were gone the only thing I would recommend is water proof hiking boots which is a must hiking in Michigan anyway.

Easy yet breath taking hike

We were not prepared for Lake Superior gusts of winds. Literally had to put our kayaks on both sides of the tent. For people that can’t laugh that off, as we did, do not stay right on the water. I would go more towards the road. It was absolutely stunning, the hiking was awesome. Just to pitch a tent was about $30 a night. Not surprised for being in Pictured Rocks and on the water. They do have bathrooms/showers, fire wood, local stores etc. we went to this library/coffee shop. It was gorgeous. It took me about 10 minutes to fall in love with Munsing. Would go back when more prepared, yes it was my first time!

Intensely Windy

Average KOA- There were many tents and RVs but we had a rustic cabin for 3 nights. The bathrooms could use some attention as well as the playground, but an overall nice stay with easy access to Pictured Rocks hiking and the town of Munising

Family friendly near Pictured Rocks

Every employee at this campground was amazing. All of the sites in the back of the campground were A+! I would NOT however recommend any of the sites near the pool. It’s incredibly loud and the sites are just feet from the waters edge. The trees also dropped thousands of little pellets that stained our brand new camper awning and all our pop out bed on our camper. I would stay at this campground if I was no where near the pool. Otherwise it was terrible. 

Sites by the pool are awful

Sites were extremely close together. I’m glad this was a quick stay for us, as we were packed in like sardines. Typical koa offerings, pool, showers, etc... They are located near some of the most amazing country I’ve seen in the Midwest. We spent most of our time out hiking in the forest and we took the pictured rocks sunset boat tour. We wanted to kayak but I believe it was too soon for our youngest son. This was a great substitute but would like to redo this in kayaks in the future. This was a great time to visit as the stable flies and mosquitos were almost nonexistent.

Tight spots!

If you want to drink beer, laugh really loud into the night and let your teenagers run amuck, this is your place! Not enough full hookup spots for the area. Staff does a good job with COVID-19 restrictions. They need to update their phone system so they can receive more than 1 phone call at a time. 

We won’t stay here again. 

Rowdy and LOUD

On our recent cross-country trip, we stayed at a few KOAs when nothing else was available. This was definitely our least favorite of all the places we stayed. The lady at check in was pleasant enough, but she was the only staff person we ever saw. I agree with other reviewers, the sites are closely packed, poor layout, dirt, barely enough room to have any privacy. I do not recommend getting a site that is near the pool - there are no walkways from the campsites so people are essentially forced to walk through your site to get to the pool unless they really want to go out of their way. The bathrooms.......old, in disrepair, dirty. The tiles on the floor in the women’s shower popped up when you stepped in, which was quite hazardous. The bathrooms are not accessible, so if you have any kind of walking disability, I would caution you to stay elsewhere. There didn’t seem to be any staff giving general supervision (at most KOAs they are very present, driving around, picking up garbage, making repairs, etc). The place was generally noisy most of the time with lots of unsupervised kids roaming around - some people enjoy that kind of environment when camping, we do not. It was convenient to where we were touring and hiking, but they offered nothing that would make me want to go back.

Not our favorite

Super close to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore! This KOA is pretty nice. Has a dog run, facilities including showers/bathrooms/laundry, along with a general store! Decent lot sizes for tents and cabins, we were there in the fall so not as packed in, but would imagine it would be tight during peak season. 

Munising, MI

I have stayed here multiple times! I even stayed here before it was a KOA. This location kept me coming back. The KOA now offers may different activities for kids too. I spent most of my days out in the park, but the campground is close by and has all the basics you need: campfire pit, picnic tables and showers! I will keep coming back to this spot.

Close to Pictured Rocks

It’s in the highway so road noise is bad. The pool is heated and decent but it’s not the Ritz. It’s close proximity to sightseeing but definitely overpriced for what it is. 

It’s a place to park your rig

The campsite itself isn't going to blow you away. There's plenty of room, but the close proximity to the lake is what you are there for.

Go there for the sights

Likes: great little store, shaded sites, quiet, pool, good restroom, laundry.

Dislikes: close to highway, sites close together, no walking paths between sites to get to bathrooms, 1 bathroom facility at front of campground.

Good campground but...

Quiet, wooded campground. Sites feel private. Super nice staff. Clean facilities and great little gift shop. Close to all the cool attractions like pictured rock cruises etc. This has been our favorite KOA so far. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend!  

Wonderful stay!

The staff at the office gave a helpful map that showed where the local waterfalls are at. There are a lot in the area! The campgrounds aren't anything special and the bathrooms are the nicest. I stayed in a kozy kabin for a night because my camping gear was wet from a storm the night before. Fire pits are provided and wood is for sale on site in the office as well as other necessities. Close to pictured rocks national lakeshore. Definitely go there!
