Cozy and Clean
Rounded up to 4 from a 3.5.
Went with my 10 year old son for the first time this past weekend. Sites are well maintained, but pretty small and most have very little to no privacy. We're tent campers, so the size was no problem for us, but could be a challenge for some. Site came with a picnic table that might have been well-loved, but it was in a great condition, comfortable, and did its job just fine.
Facilities are clean, but minimal--no fuss here. I have limited experience camping, so I wasn't wild about the row of water closets because it felt like going to the bathroom in a partially open room since there was so much exposure to the outside. Oh well--it wasn't terrible and it was an experience! FYI-showers are coin-operated.
There are no bike trails that connect to the campground, but we rode our bikes the three miles to Race Point beach and that was wonderful! It's an intimidating, though very short, few minutes riding on Rt 6 and then it's an easy ride down a side road in great condition til you get to the bike trail. The bike trail was fantastic! It's a lot of hills, but it's in great shape and such a lovely ride.
After we checked out on Sunday we drove to Herring Cove Beach and through downtown P-town--great area with lots of fun to be had!
No points off for this, but just to let people know--there is nothing in the way of communal space for kids, so no playground or even a basketball hoop. Again, not a big deal, but it can be nice when you're traveling with a solo kid to have an easy opportunity or two to join in some fun.
The camp store is helpfully stocked and I had very pleasant interactions with two different staff members. After hours check in was a breeze and there were no issues navigating to our site.
We were at site 2, so I could hear some highway noise, but I didn't think it was bad. I imagine the sites in the 70s could feel like the noise was too much.
Ground Hog Hill Road runs right against a suburban backyard. There is a privacy fence between the homes and the campground, but I would not have enjoyed being that close to a neighborhood. On a walk around I noted that sites 28, 30, 31, and 31a looked particularly unwelcoming--super tiny! Sites 43-47 looked nice as did 85-87 and the bungalows looked really cute from the outside.
