Equestrian campers near Covington, Kentucky can access several campgrounds within a 60-mile radius. The terrain features rolling hills with elevation changes between 500-900 feet throughout the region. Late summer temperatures average 85°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons offer milder conditions with occasional rain showers that can create muddy trail conditions.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: East Fork State Park Campground has a 2,160-acre lake with multiple fishing spots. "There was several miles of bike trails, bridle trails and hiking trails. There is also a beach and marina for campers away from the main beach and marina for those just visiting the park for the day," notes Andrea F.
Water activities: Bring kayaks to Whitewater Memorial State Park Campground for easy lake access. "Whitewater Memorial State Park is located close to Liberty Indiana and is our favorite between the two major parks on Brookville Lake. It has water access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes," shares Brandie B., who recommends this spot for kayakers.
Hiking network: The Twin Valley Trail system at Five Rivers Metroparks combines existing trails to create more than 25 miles of connected paths. "There's a great backpacking trail that's challenging and an easy middle meeting place for friends/family from Columbus and Cincinnati that can meet in Dayton Metroparks/Five Rivers - Germantown and take on the TVT challenge," writes Karen K.
What campers like
Spacious equestrian sites: Riders appreciate the roomy layout at Horsemen's Camp in Whitewater Memorial State Park. "I came here and stayed in my tent (family had their horse trailer with camper) for a night during the chilly nights of October. I wish all campsites were like these - very, very spread out!" reports Brady R.
Seasonal activities: Hueston Woods State Park Campground offers diverse recreation options throughout the year. "We love Hueston Woods! We have been there twice now and tent camp. A lot of the sites are large and have enough space for everything you need! The beach is a short distance away and love that they also include a dog swimming area," says Maddy B.
Privacy between sites: Winton Woods Campground offers wooded separation in some areas. "Very nice campground inside the urban loop in Cincinnati. Close to everything, yet quiet and secluded camping experience," writes Kenneth D., highlighting the balance of accessibility and seclusion.
What you should know
Seasonal booking patterns: October weekends at Hueston Woods fill quickly for Halloween events. "Unknowingly, it appeared every weekend in October has a big Halloween emphasis, so the upper campground was sold out. I was advised the lower non electric loop would also be sold out...which reinforced my gratefulness for midweek camping," reports Dave V.
Horse trailer challenges: Some equestrian sites have limitations for larger rigs. "I'm in a class a 35 foot motorhome. Live less than 30 mins away. Glad I checked it out I will come again. None are level looking so you will need to know what your doing," notes Bobby C. from A.J. Jolly Park & Campground.
Water accessibility: Bring your own water when camping at Five Rivers Metroparks. "If there is one complaint, it would be that there is a dearth of potable water stations, so all water needs to be packed in from trailheads with water, the Welcome Center, or pumped from non-potable sources, filtered and/or treated," advises Charles R.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Cowan Lake State Park Campground has multiple play areas scattered throughout the loops. "There are organized activities on the lake and through the nature center. Playgrounds are in several loops (I saw them in C and G)," a visitor shares.
Educational trails: Twin Creek Metro Park features informational markers for young explorers. "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," explains Kenpocentaur K.
Equestrian-friendly activities: Versailles State Park offers horse-friendly trails for families with varied riding experience levels. "Our favorite between the two major parks on Brookville Lake. It has water access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes," one camper explains about the nearby recreation options.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Winton Woods, some spots offer better hookups than others. "Full-hookups have little to no shade. Sites are pretty close together and small, but standard for a county Park. The electric sites are nice. Reasonable amount of shade in most," Mike H. advises.
Leveling challenges: RVers at A.J. Jolly should prepare for uneven terrain. "Sites 7, 11, 10, 3 are the best. The power for site 7 is on the wrong side so your going to need an extension possibly. All the premium sites have 30/50 amp hook ups and water," Jeffrey D. notes about site selection.
Site surface variations: Different campgrounds offer various pad types. "All camper pads are paved and most appeared level or just very slightly sloped. A picnic table and fire ring complete the site. Some sites have more trees to provide privacy while others are closer together with little separation," Lee D. observes about East Fork State Park.
