Taylor Ridge Campground — Brown County State Park

HUGE park and campground!

General: Three main campgrounds (Buffalo Ridge, Raccoon Ridge, and Taylor Ridge) with a total of over 400 sites (including 10 accessible sites in Buffalo Ridge);  we stayed in Taylor Ridge. There is also a lodge and cabins. You will have to pay a day-use fee in addition to your camping fee.

Site Quality: All of the sites in Taylor Ridge are electric which is likely why we reserved here since we did not know what the weather would be like on the downside of October. All of the sites in this campground are nicely wooded; not all are level, but we lucked out with site 315, which is at the end of one of the “cul-de-sacs”. The only downside to this was that cars constantly drove to the end and whipped around the turnaround. You are given a map at check-in which shows this is obviously not a through road but maybe a sign would be helpful? As with other Indiana state parks we have visited, the picnic table is very skimpy and cannot seat more than four comfortably.

Bathhouse: Three very clean bathhouses with ample stalls and showers. Did not use the shower. There are several vault toilets to supplement the larger bathhouses, and these appeared to be clean and in good condition.

Activities: There are many hiking trails. Unfortunately, we arrived in the late afternoon and had to leave early the next morning, so we did not explore any of the trails. Mountain biking is also popular (there are several trails for this) and there is a HUGE horseman’s camp, which appeared full during our stay. There is also a swimming pool that is open during the summer. In October, the park was geared up for Halloween with a site decorating contest, a hayride on the weekends, and other activities.

Conclusion: I was a bit overwhelmed with how big this park was, and I wish we had more time here to explore some of the hiking trails as it seems like a very nice park. Exiting the park to the south can be challenging, as the road Google Maps directs you to had a gate blocking it and the maps direct you through the Horseman’s Camp which you are not supposed to drive through, however, a park employee called ahead and we were told it would be ok as long as we drove very slowly so as not to spook the horses.
