Kankakee River State Park Equestrian Campground offers primitive accommodations for horse owners along the Kankakee River, approximately 60 miles south of Chicago. The campground sits on terrain characterized by limestone outcroppings and oak-hickory forests typical of northeastern Illinois. Trail riders have access to over 12 miles of equestrian paths that connect to the wider park trail system, with water access points for horses spaced at regular intervals throughout the routes.
What to do
River fishing access: The Kankakee River provides multiple fishing spots accessible from the campgrounds. "The area is well kept, clean, and well managed. I have frequented this park because it offers a lot of activities from primitive camping, RV parking, fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, etc," notes Andrea F. of Kankakee River State Park.
Historical exploration: Visit the historic cemetery near the camping areas. "This site is near a small cemetery that has tombstones that are hundreds of years old," shares Phillip L., adding that the sites at Davis Creek are particularly worth reserving in advance during peak season.
Trail riding: Horse owners can access dedicated equestrian trails directly from the campground, with routes that accommodate various skill levels. The trails follow the Kankakee River and traverse through wooded areas, providing natural obstacles and terrain changes suitable for experienced riders. Most trails range from 2-8 miles in length and connect to the main park system.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: Many campsites offer ample room with natural vegetation creating privacy. "The campsites are very spread out and you will have a very private quiet campsite," explains Phillip L., though he cautions that "the restrooms were really dirty and had a lot of insects flying around."
River access: The proximity to water is highly rated by campers. "We had a really awesome time at the main office/nature center, where my kiddos got to feed and hold a variety of reptiles!" shares Linda N. about her experience at Kankakee River State Park, adding that "The river was nice to visit and we were able to take the kids to some knee deep water to play."
Natural setting: The undeveloped feel appeals to those seeking a more authentic outdoor experience. "I wish we were able to stay longer than one day! I loved this spot! We loved riding our bikes along the river and just being away from the hustle and bustle," reports Jacqueline F., appreciating the "silence and solitude" of the area.
What you should know
Site-specific characteristics: Individual campsites vary considerably in size and suitability for different camping styles. "We had four sites on Osage loop for tent camping. Two were very small (14&15), and little grass for tent setup, fine for RV or trailer campers... 16&17 were amazing for tents!! Open, tall trees for our tight rope and hammocks and shade," advises Shannon H. of Leisure Lake Resort.
Facilities condition: While shower houses are available, cleanliness and maintenance can vary. "The shower house was good. We went during July 4th so it was busy (the toilet paper was completely out when I stopped by and it looked like some kids had a water balloon fight in there) but the team came out to clean up promptly," reports Linda N.
Equestrian requirements: Horse owners must bring their own portable corral or containment systems as permanent stalls are not available. Water for horses is accessible at communal spigots, but no direct hookups exist at equestrian sites. Riders should carry proof of negative Coggins tests as rangers occasionally check documentation during peak seasons.
Tips for camping with families
Campsite selection: Choose sites strategically based on proximity to amenities and space needs. "The sites are straightforward and vary quite a bit: some are huge with open green space and others I feel like just for a car and a tent. Our site was perfect with trees to hang a hammock on and for the kids to run around," notes Linda N.
Weather considerations: Prepare for extreme temperatures, especially in summer months. "Playgrounds are unfortunately exposed so it was not suitable for the 100 degree days we had," warns Linda N. about Kankakee River State Park.
Water safety: The Kankakee River has strong currents in certain sections. "The river is fast, tried to fish," reports Shannon H., while Linda N. emphasizes that "swimming is NOT allowed in the river" but mentions that shallow areas allow for supervised water play.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Electric connections are available at select campgrounds but not at the equestrian sites. "There were two outlets available, and a small rectangular fire pit with a grate on top," notes Emma H. about her stay at Kankakee River State Park, though she was tent camping at the time.
Site specifications: RV sites vary in size and leveling needs. "Biggest spaces. Can add that 13, 6, 5, 4 Osage are good RV but not good tent," advises Shannon H., providing specific site recommendations for larger vehicles.
Noise considerations: Expect varied noise levels depending on timing and location. "The only complaint is the noise level after 10pm. The quite time was not strictly enforced. It could be we are there on a Saturday night," shares Ray S., giving insight into potential weekend disturbances.
