Chain O'Lakes State Park contains the main camping options near Ingleside, Illinois, situated within 3,000 acres of wetlands and woodland. The park features multiple lakes connected by channels with varying difficulty for paddling. Temperatures range from mid-80s in summer to below freezing in winter, with higher humidity from June through August when mosquitos are most active.
What to do
Kayaking on connected lakes: At Turner Lake South — Chain O' Lakes State Park, paddlers can explore multiple connected waterways. "I love to kayak through here because I don't need to paddle through the river unless I'm feeling competitive. I enjoy this route for the wildlife and nature scenery. I've seen beavers, minks, ferrets, and sand cranes on my two trips so far," notes Cora M.
Beach activities: Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers swimming and beach recreation during summer months. The beach "is large enough and there are clean bathrooms right there. The camp store sells treats and pizza, very convenient and makes for a more relaxing camping experience when traveling with young kids," mentions Chloe N.
Hiking trails: Kettle Moraine State Forest provides multiple trail networks with varying difficulty levels within 30 minutes of Ingleside. "Red Trail, Paradise Trail, Rice Lake are all great hikes. Great views of Lake Ottawa," shares Cathy L., adding that "about 20 minutes northeast of the campground is Lapham Peek Park with a walk up tower offering great views of the area."
What campers like
Quiet evenings: Many campers appreciate the peaceful atmosphere at night. "Spots are mostly wide open to the road but separated enough to feel private. While pretty busy it still felt private and quiet aside from nearby sites playing music most of the day and early night," shares Matt K. about Turner Lake South.
Wildlife viewing: Pinewoods Campground offers wildlife encounters just an hour from Ingleside. "We asked the ranger about hiking and she gave us a map to a trail system that connects to this campground between the group sites and loop 3. We enjoyed a 4 mile hike from camp to the observation trail," notes Art S.
Lake activities: Fox Den Campground provides convenient water access. "It has the electrical hookups that we need and has a bath house that is close to where you camp. It has lots of groomed and ungroomed walking trails. It has a boat ramp and a small store and restaurant," says Christopher R.
What you should know
Limited equestrian facilities: Despite some trails suitable for riding, dedicated horse camping facilities are limited. "There are horse/snowmobile trails, but no equestrian campground," explains Brian O. regarding Chain O'Lakes State Park.
Shower facilities vary: "The shower houses are dated, yet I have seen them clean and also not clean on busy camper weekends," notes Marisa A. about Turner Lake South.
Site selection strategy: When seeking more privacy at Chain O'Lakes, "The best sites for those hoping for privacy are in Turner Lake South and Mud Lake East. The campsites are a little bigger in Turner Lake South, I feel, but both have campsites circled by woods with a level place to pitch a tent."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Big Foot Beach State Park Campground offers family activities within a reasonable drive from Ingleside. "Great place to quickly get in and set up, easy access to all amenities, the ranger station, and camp hosts if needed. Good fishing ponds for the kids, and great hiking trails throughout the property," mentions Brenton S.
Budget options: Affordable camping keeps family costs down at Turner Lake South. "These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There's some small trails around as well that are beginner. There was electricity, however those sites are $25/night," says Addison G.
Activity planning: Schedule morning water activities when lakes are less busy. "Chain o' Lakes is one of the busiest waterways in Illinois, with motorboats everywhere in the height of the summer season. We canoe, and both times we stayed there it was October, so I can't tell you how crowded."
Tips from RVers
Site selection for larger rigs: Fox Den offers better accommodation for RVs than other nearby campgrounds. "Fox Den is superior to Honeysuckle Hollows because each site has an individual electric post. Sites in Honeysuckle have electric posts too far from parking pad. Fox Den also has more space between sites, more level pads and each site is tucked away with trees," explains Debra M.
Hookup availability: Electric hookups at Chain O'Lakes fill quickly during peak season. "The only big minus is the full hook ups fill up fast no spur of the moment camping unless it is early or late in the season," warns Jeanne M. about Elkhorn Campgrounds.
Gate closing times: Be aware of strict gate times at Chain O'Lakes. "The gates close at 10:PM and there are tire shredders, you can leave but you can't get back in unless you want to walk 2+ miles in the dark."
