Fishing rods and boat trailers are common sights at Boulder Rec. Area, an Army Corps of Engineers campground on the western shore of Carlyle Lake in southern Illinois. The campground has its own boat ramp and marina, where campers can fuel up and access the lake directly. The shoreline is rocky, which makes wading in for a swim more difficult than it might look from camp, but anglers find the lake access straightforward. Birds are abundant around the sites, and the lake itself is large enough that open water views stretch well into the distance from many spots in the campground.
Site quality here varies noticeably by location. Waterfront sites overlook the marina and catch lake sunsets to the west, and they tend to fill up fast on weekends. Joanna M. describes site 6 as having "full hookups, plenty of space, lots of shade." Site 35, near the water, draws consistent praise for sunset views. Most sites include a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground roads are paved throughout. The shower house has air conditioning, an amenity several campers mention specifically, and laundry facilities are on site. One recurring complaint: the single trash station near the entrance can overflow on busy weekends.
Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available, and the campground accepts RVs up to 101 feet. Tent campers can make it work, though the layout skews toward RV use. Reservations are available online, and the waterfront sites in particular are worth booking well in advance. A grocery store and Walmart are roughly 20 minutes away, so resupply runs are manageable. Campers looking for pet-friendly camping near Carlyle Lake will find Boulder accommodates pets. Nearby alternatives include Coles Creek Recreation Area about three miles to the southwest.
One practical note worth flagging: when Carlyle Lake floods, access to the campground can be cut off entirely. The season runs April 13 through October 12, and late summer weekends draw crowds. Booking a waterfront site early, and packing extra trash bags given the limited waste station capacity, will make the stay considerably smoother.
