Best Cabin Camping near Riggins, ID

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabin options near Riggins include private accommodations like the Adams Ranger Station, a log cabin in the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest that requires visitors to bring their own drinking water. The rustic structure offers mountain views and historical character without modern amenities. "Beautiful log cabin in the mountains of Idaho, so astonishing views are plentiful. There is no cell service here, so prepare for the trip ahead," notes one visitor. Other cabin rentals can be found at Salmon River Resort in White Bird, where accommodations include full utility hookups and river access.

Reservations are essential for most cabins in the region, particularly during summer months when Ponderosa State Park's Peninsula Campground fills quickly. The Burgdorf Guard Station in Payette National Forest provides a more secluded cabin experience with basic electric hookups and allows pets. Most properties require bookings several months in advance for peak season. McCall RV Resort's Northfolk Lodge offers year-round cabin rentals with full amenities, while the more rustic forest service cabins typically have limited seasonal availability.

Most cabin rentals provide basic furniture and beds but expect to bring your own linens, pillows, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties, from full kitchens at resort cabins to minimal cooking options at forest service structures. Guests staying at Adams Ranger Station should plan to pack all supplies as there are no nearby services. Properties closer to towns like McCall offer better access to groceries and supplies. Visitors to remote cabins should prepare thoroughly, as a camper at Adams Ranger Station advised: "Print out your maps to the station, otherwise getting lost on your way here is a very likely possibility."

    Adams Ranger Station

    Mountain Views and Rich History

Beautiful log cabin in the mountains of Idaho, located in Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest, so astonishing views are plentiful. There is no cell service here, so prepare for the trip ahead, print out your maps to the station, otherwise getting lost on your way here is a very likely possibility. BYO drinking water, headlamps and sense of adventure. Pack out what you pack in..must respect the power of nature.

Near by attractions are Florence which is a well known location for gold mining in days past, nice place to hike and explore the area’s history.

    Wallowa Lake State Park Campground

    Clean and quiet

This campground is a nice well maintained place with clean facilities and well dispersed sites. It was a bad fire season when we were there so it’s pretty smoky in my picture.

Clean bathrooms scattered throughout, water available. Nice tree cover and a River right at the edge of where we were. There’s trails and the lake close by too. Picnic tables and nice fire pits.

It was a very quiet place and has several loops in the campground.

The Best RV Campsite in McCall, Idaho!!!

We reserved a spot here to prepare for a rafting trip we had won from the McCall WinterFest. We are so glad we did!!! This place ROCKS! We had a portable grill to cook our meals. The property is very clean and the staff is ver friendly. Can't ask for anything more!

Check out the link to a video of our camping trip to Fish Lake Campground.

This is my favorite place to camp. Beautiful views, outstanding action packed trout fishing. Far away from anything. Nice restrooms and natural spring is plumbed in to the campground. Best water I have ever tasted. This place is awesome, you won’t be disappointed.

Peninsula Campground — Ponderosa State Park

If You Like A Fish Bowl

This campground boasts lovely showers and bathrooms. All well and good if you like to be in a fishbowl. There is no privacy between camp spaces. The rangers do not enforce the quiet hour rule and you get woken up in the middle of the night by screaming kids. Not my idea of a fun camping experience.

    Wallowa Lake State Park Campground

    Beautiful but not my favorite

Lake is beautiful. This campground is what you expect from a state park, appreciated having showers and running water for the day we were there. Plenty to do in and around the lake.

    Wallowa Lake State Park Campground

    Great campground, especially for kids!

I have been here several times as a child, but my most recent venture was as an adult with my own children. It was really nice to see that not much has changed in the last ten years since I was here last, and my kids can enjoy the same campground Ive been going to since I was their age. The restroom facilities are great. The restrooms have multiple stalls of flushing toilets, running sinks with soap and paper towel dispensers. There are also showers. You can buy firewood for 5$ a bundle and bring it back to your campsite in a rolling cart. There's a nice playground for the kids. The wildlife here is pretty desensitized to humans, deer will just wanted through. We spent a whole day feeding two chipmunks (who we named Jeff and Veronica) peanuts. The downside is that the campsites are extremely close together with very little in between so there is very little privacy. A positive if that though is that my kids were able to instantly make friends with our neighbors and they played the whole time and had a blast. The lake is nice, there are often Canadian geese down there. There is a swimming area sectioned off, and boat rentals available. Right down the road is the wallowa lake tramway. It's 38$ per adult, and 28$ per child over 4, but it is definitely a great experience. It's a 15 minute ride to the top of the mountain on a gondola. At the top is a restaurant, restrooms, lots of trails. My personal favorite is the royal purple lookout solely because if the friendly chipmunks that come and harass you for food. Nearby the town if Joseph has a ton of cool shops to visit. Mad marys is a must if you have kids, there is an old fashioned ice cream parlor in half of it. I can't wait to come back here again, because we had a blast!

    Wallowa Lake State Park Campground

Fun place for the fam, but our site was small and only one tent option

We spent Memorial Day weekend at this park. It was fun, the kids rode bikes, we rented a row boat (they have kayaks, SUP's, etc). The town of Joseph is about 10 minutes with a cute main street area. We stayed in A25 and I think it is the smallest tent site in the whole park (the reason it got 3 of 5 stars). We had a small creek that backed the spot that limited tent placement to one slightly sloped spot squeezed between the road and the picnic table. It was nicely treed by the picnic table which was nice. If we go back, the spot to the right of us (A26) was a really good one (would've been a five star for sure) - spacious, multi tents, etc. This end of the campground was the closest to the lake access, store and docks.

Guide to Riggins

Cabin rentals near Riggins, Idaho provide access to the rugged terrain of central Idaho where elevations range from 1,800 feet along the Salmon River to over 8,000 feet in nearby mountain ranges. The area receives approximately 14 inches of annual precipitation, with summer temperatures averaging 85°F during daytime hours and dropping to the 50s at night. Most forest service cabins remain open from late May through October, while private accommodations typically offer year-round availability.

What to do

Hiking to historical sites: The Blackhorse Campground area offers access to numerous hiking trails near the Imnaha River. "Hells canyon overlook very close!" notes Kaitlyn P., highlighting the proximity to viewpoints that showcase the deepest river gorge in North America.

Fishing opportunities: When staying at cabin accommodations in McCall, consider visiting nearby fishing spots. A visitor at McCall RV Resort recommends: "For any fisherman, as you leave the park go right about 2 miles to a parking area for Brown Pond. I caught my limit in 20 minutes, and earthworms hanging two feet down from a bobber is the ticket."

Winter recreation: Several cabin properties remain accessible during winter months. A visitor at Wallowa Lake State Park notes: "We arrived in late November, when it was cold, snowy, and practically empty. But the campground and all of its facilities were open, and the camp host was extremely friendly and helpful!"

What campers like

River proximity: Many cabin rentals offer direct water access. At Blackhorse Campground, campers appreciate the natural soundtrack: "The creek is right next to the sites and is great to sleep next to! The bathrooms were very clean and the sites were well-maintained and relatively private."

Cabin amenities: Rustic cabins provide varying comfort levels. The Burgdorf Guard Station offers basic electric hookups and allows pets, making it suitable for those seeking a more primitive cabin experience with some conveniences.

Location convenience: Cabins near recreation areas rank highly with visitors. "Park At The River is in a beautiful location... The area is a great little getaway with a myriad of activities to do. Besides the lake there is a (pretty expensive) tram that takes you up the mountain, go carts, miniature golf, discovery centers, museums, etc.," explains Luke L.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin properties require advance planning. For Peninsula Campground at Ponderosa State Park, one visitor advises: "A prime spot to camp in McCall. Plan ahead and book early. Great campsites with full hook ups and amenities."

Seasonal availability: Weather conditions affect accessibility. "PSP is a great place to stay or spend a day at. There is great lake access, hiking trails, and the Ponderosa's are superb! I like to go to PSP during the 'off-season' to avoid the crowds," recommends Celine K.

Privacy variations: Site layout differs between properties. At Peninsula Campground, Jamie H. notes: "There is no privacy between camp spaces. The rangers do not enforce the quiet hour rule and you get woken up in the middle of the night by screaming kids."

Tips for camping with families

Indoor alternatives: Some cabins offer indoor recreation options for rainy days. McCall RV Resort provides "swimming pool, jacuzzi, and free popcorn all day!" according to G K., making it suitable for families needing backup activities.

Multi-generational options: Park At The River offers activities for various age groups. "Campsite super nice, peaceful and beautiful surroundings. Restrooms/showers very clean. Staff extremely nice," shares Debra B., who visited for her "grand daughter's first camping trip."

Educational experiences: Several cabin locations provide learning opportunities. At Peninsula Campground, Hannah C. recommends: "Be sure to check out the hiking trails and visit the Lily Marsh, Meadow Marsh, and Osprey Point. In the winter, the park offers great snowshoe trails, and groomed trails for cross-country skiing and skate skiing."

Tips from RVers

River proximity options: The Salmon River Resort in White Bird offers flexible accommodations. "Nice resort 30/50 amp water and sewer. Nice grass area for tents. River access," notes Kerry L. about the property formerly known as Hells Canyon Jet Boat Trips and Lodging.

Site selection strategy: When choosing cabin or RV sites, consider proximity to amenities. At McCall RV Resort, JoAnn L. shares: "Escorted to our spot and helped us back in. Cable as well. We had bad weather, but the site, 115, felt pretty isolated."

Site spacing considerations: Look for cabins with adequate separation. "Though it can be busy, there is plenty to do to get away from everyone. The big pines are amazing, especially if you get up late at night when the meteor showers happen," advises Ryan L. about Peninsula Campground.
