Fly fishing along the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River draws many visitors to Big Hank Campground, the last Forest Service campground on this stretch of road above Devil's Elbow, Bumble Bee, and Kit's. The paved roads throughout the campground make it easy to move around, and several reviewers note the sites are well-spaced with large conifers providing separation between neighbors. Anglers and swimmers have direct water access, and the campground sits within places to camp around Coeur d'Alene National Forest that spans northern Idaho.
The campground includes fire rings, grills, picnic tables, and large garbage cans at sites. A resident host makes rounds at least twice daily, keeps the pit toilets clean, and sells firewood on-site. Site sizes vary noticeably, and some smaller spots make tent setup tricky. It fills on busy summer weekends. Directly across the road, Hanks Meadow provides a free overflow option for those willing to ford a shallow water crossing to reach an open field near the river.
One change worth knowing: Lisa W. notes that the Forest Service removed "huge amounts of trees," which has reduced the site privacy that earlier visitors experienced. Downed logs from storm damage and logging activity are also visible throughout the area. The campground is open from late May through early September, accommodates RVs up to 45 feet, and reservations are available. Campers who want to fish a quiet stretch of river with an attentive host on-site will find this a reliable base.
