Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

Horse owner or golfer this is the place for you and it’s only 45 minutes fr

Nice campground, bathhouses exceptionally clean. Camped on a Sunday and Monday and was so peaceful with all of nature’s  sounds. There’s two lakes there but you need to take a short drive to get to the swimming beach and to better fishing. Golf course looks great, and  equestrian camping looked great too. Lots of easy hiking trails to explore.  A very  short drive from Atlanta make this campground a nice weekend camping getaway

Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

    PERFECT GETAWAY!

We have camped at this beautiful park NUMEROUS times and there is a reason that we keep coming back (actually there are multiple reasons)!

HLC has an amazing staff that is there when you need them and not there when you don't! The camp hosts are friendly, the Ranger rides through on a regular basis and is friendly/outgoing (you can tell that he enjoys his job)!

The campground is not cramped at all and most of the sites are spread apart to provide privacy!

Not long ago, as many of the GA State Parks are doing, HLC swapped over to "site-specific" reservations..meaning that you must choose a particular site when reserving. This is VERY useful if you're familiar with the campground and have a favorite site (such as we do) but it can be a shot in the dark if you're not familiar with the campground.

The bath houses/comfort stations are brand new (including laundry rooms) and the camp hosts keep them spotless! The campground roads are newly paved and there are a couple of new sites.

There are hiking trails, kayak rentals, a beach area (swimming) and two nice lakes! There are equestrian trails and even an equestrian campground!

The park has numerous cottages to rent, a group shelter, picnic pavilions and even a mini-golf course (newly renovated)!

Not far from the campground (in Rutledge, GA) there is a Dollar general in case you forgot something that the park store doesn't have.

If you've never visited this beautiful park, ou are missing out on one of our hidden gems!

Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

    Far enough away, yet...

Hard Labor Creek State Park is one of the Georgia State Park system's best kept secrets! Located just minutes away from Rutledge, GA, HLC seems like a whole world away! Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, HLC is still convenient to Rutledge and Madison, in case you forgot to pack something.

HLC features hiking trails, mini golf, newly "renovated" campsites that include two BRAND new bathhouses (comfort stations). The comfort stations have restrooms/showers, as well as two family restroom/shower facilities. The comfort stations also feature vending machines (drinks) and a laundry facility!

Kayak rentals, a beach/swimming area and numerous special programs are available!

Cell phone service is very spotty in the park but that is alright with us, camping is about getting AWAY and enjoying the outdoors, not staring at your electronic devices!

If golf is your thing, HLC has a beautiful 18-hole golf course!

    Ocmulgee River Camp

    Nice mostly quiet spot

It was nice and warm even in December! Almost 70 degrees! Spot with a nice horse trail to hike - saw some deer and a mystery black animal, maybe a boar or a bear - unsure. Had a lot of neighbors on a weekday night - and a mystery trailer with no activity and no truck to pull it. Overall pretty easy gravel road to get to it, was a little buggy since it was humid and by the river but not too bad.

    Big Country Camping

    Small Campground, Big Appeal

Small, family owned campground in a rural area has a comforting, relaxing atmosphere where you feel like family. We are first time RVers and were nervous about our Shakedown trip. Rob and Matt walked my husband through every step with “insider” tips. Mindy was so welcoming and gave me lots of good ideas while the guys set up. She is also the best hostess organizing food, fun, and friendship by the pool. We will definitely be back!!!

Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

    Quiet, rural state park camping

This campground has a great rural state park vibe. If you’re weekending -it’s nice. The sites are pretty private & woodsy. Kids can ride bikes everywhere, play some putt-putt or on the playground, go fishing or take them to the lake beach (just a short drive away-5 minutes).
If you’re into golf-looks like a nice course. If you’re planning to remote work from here-forget it. We had absolutely no service, even weak cell service. You’re also away from town/groceries/restaurants.
Bottom line is it’s a fun place to weekend/feel pretty remote but not ideal for full timers who still work/school online.

    Lake Sinclair Campground

Good Location for Ocmulgee Mounds Visit

Lake Sinclair, GA: (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good

Summary: I have stopped by to camp for 4 years. This time we stayed in the electric, Loop A which has 5 sites. There were other users there who were concerning. One was what looks to be a homeless extended stay occupant in a trailer. The other was a tent camping couple who decided to camp with their tents in the RV only area. That said, the lower loops, Loop A and Loop D are more visible to the camp host, thus a safer feeling. If you don’t want electric hookup, those loops are a nicer area of the campground.

(70 yr olds in 17’ trailer with a desire for a campsite that has at least some visual privacy - after the trailer is in the spot.)

Overall Rating: 1.5 for the electric sites - they are not necessarily attractive, out in the open, and no visual separation between sites. They are moderately spaced. The non-electric sites(no generators allowed as per website) area 4 rating. There are spacious and well spaced sites in the Loop B. Many sites are set back from the campground loop road.
Price 2023: $ 10.5 for elect site & 4.5 for non-electric site w interagency pass Usage during visit: Very light - Thanksgiving Site Privacy: More privacy in non electric sites Site Spacing: 5 decent sized sites in the electric loop. Non- electric loop has very large sites.
Site surface: Gravel Reservations: First come, first serve.
Campground Noise: Very quiet. Only one other camper Road Noise: Too far from a main road to be an issue. From electric sites and from some non electric sites the traffic in the access road can be heard.
Through Traffic in campground: Not through campground. There is on the access road to access the lake. Boaters use this road along with other day users. Electric Hookup: Loop A, sites 1 - 5 only Sewer Hookup: No Dump Station: Yes, just following the check in station on the right. Potable Water Available: At electric sites. Generators: Not allowed. This is a shame since this campground is so lightly used. Bathroom/ Shower House: Yes - In Loop B (services both Loop A and B). Hot water worked only in the woman’s shower. The hot water in the shower in Loop D works fine and is in a little nicer facility. Drive to that one for a shower. These are pretty old buildings, but pretty clean. Bathroom only house in the day use area is new and nicer to be in. Pull Throughs: Site 5 is a pull through. Cell Service (AT&T): 1 to 2 bars. Setting: In a deciduous forest. Lower loop( non-electric) has a lakeside (or two)trailer sites . Weather: Cool and partial sun. Bugs: None Solar: Depends on the site and probably none when there is foliage. Host: Yes. Located in D-loop .
Rig size: Not suited for big rigs.
Sites: Loop A is the Electric loop with 5 sites. Loop A is not so great. There are beautiful extra large sites in non-electric/no generator lower Loop B. Loop C has been “temporarily”, as per signage, closed for at least 4 years. Loop D has smaller sites, many of which look to be tent sites. Some of these sites are nicely located close to the lakeside in both B and D.

Guide to Covington

Camping near Covington, Georgia sits at 725 feet above sea level in the Piedmont region, characterized by rolling hills and mixed pine-hardwood forests. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while winters remain mild with occasional freezing nights. The area offers multiple camping options near rivers and lakes, with the South River and Yellow River providing natural boundaries.

What to do

Trail riding opportunities: Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground maintains over 22 miles of equestrian trails through varied terrain. "The park has nice hiking trails and bikes trails, dog friendly," notes Winston M., who appreciates the park's recent renovations. For those seeking horse-focused activities, the trails can be accessed directly from some campsites.

Kayak on moonlit waters: Several waterways near Covington offer paddling experiences, including guided night trips. "They offered a kayak by moonlight group tour that was fun," shares Maethea R. about Hard Labor Creek State Park, which includes rental options at its lake. These evening paddle trips typically run May through September and require advance registration.

Photography at water features: Newton Factory Shoals Rec Area provides distinctive settings for nature photography with its shoals and small waterfall. Joshua B. calls it a "Beautiful backdrop for photos and a great place to just play in the river." The park manager often explains the historical context of the former factory site to visitors interested in the area's industrial past.

What campers like

Clean, renovated facilities: Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground has updated its amenities. "This park is just renovated, the bathhouses are clean nice and big," explains Winston M., adding that the "sites are pretty big, shaded, no level but not too bad I'm always prepared, and well maintained." The park completed renovations to its comfort stations in 2019, including family restroom/shower facilities.

Waterfront camping sites: Several campgrounds offer sites directly on water. At Newton Factory Shoals Rec Area, "Some of the sites are waterfront. There is a bathroom with a shower that was kept up with and stocked with toilet paper and paper towels," reports Nicolle, who enjoyed watching beavers from site 4. Camping sites on the water typically fill first, especially on weekends.

Affordable primitive camping: Ocmulgee River Camp offers a budget-friendly option at no cost. "Very nice a bit bumpy on the drive in but no major holes. Quiet and peaceful 2 neighbors great amount of space to find a nice spot," says J.A., who noted perfect Verizon service at the site. The dispersed camping area provides multiple flat spaces with existing fire pits.

What you should know

Reservation systems vary: While some campgrounds require advance booking, others operate on first-come basis. At Lake Sinclair Campground, "First come, first serve. Fortunately end of November not busy," notes Caz, adding the campground has "spacious sites with fire pit, grill, and picnic table." Off-season camping typically offers better availability from November through March.

Hunter activity: During hunting seasons, some areas have increased shooting activity. At Ocmulgee River Camp, Julie H. reports, "There are hunters around and we heard a good deal of shots." Similarly, Greg D. notes "train horn in the distance and gunshots in the distance as well from hunters here and there but all around a great spot to really enjoy."

Campground locations can be confusing: Some properties have unclear addresses or entrances. At Newton Factory Shoals, Nicolle cautions: "Note to future campers: the campground is NOT located at the address provided. This is the recreational park. The campground is actually up the road, on the opposite side of the park, at the entrance of the graveyard." Always call ahead or check recent reviews for updated location information.

Tips for camping with families

Multiple recreation options: Big Country Camping offers swimming facilities that appeal to children. "Had a great time hanging out at the pool and very spacious camp site," shares Matt. The property provides 48 acres with various activities within a 10-mile drive to Jackson Lake for additional water recreation.

Farm animal experiences: At Liberty Stables, families can camp while observing farm animals. "Beautiful property with farm animals to look at," says Rachel, who needed last-minute accommodations. The working horse farm maintains goats, sheep, chickens, and horses that children can observe from a safe distance.

Weekend crowd management: Parks can become very congested on weekends. Christina from Hard Labor Creek notes: "Very crowded weekends, great weekdays. The weekend nights were so crowded with cars spilling into the camp roads, loads of large groups at each site. Felt very claustrophobic. On weekdays the park became a (lovely) ghost town." For family trips, weekday camping provides a more relaxed experience.

Tips from RVers

GPS routing caution: Some approaches to equestrian camping near Covington involve low clearances. Debbie K. warns about Hard Labor Creek: "Be careful and follow the Campground signs and not your GPS because you might come in a different way and have to navigate an overpass that, for some rigs, is too short!" RVers should call ahead for recommended approach routes.

Size limitations: Most local campgrounds cannot accommodate large RVs. At Newton Factory Shoals, Nicolle explains their experience: "We have a 10 foot trailer. We were able to back in to our spot with no problem. The site was not level but that wasn't a big deal for us in our rooftop tent. We didn't check out the other sites but an RV would probably have a hard time setting up here." Rigs under 30 feet typically have the best options.

Cell service considerations: Working remotely requires reliable connectivity. James at Big Country Camping appreciated their "Excellent cell signal which is important since I work remotely from my camper." Signal strength varies significantly between campgrounds, with Hard Labor Creek noted for spotty service while Ocmulgee River Camp maintains strong Verizon coverage.
