 Cradled in the hills of the North Georgia Mountains overlooking beautiful Lake Rabun, this developed recreation area offers camping and hiking. Across the road, the lake offers plenty of water activities like swimming, boating, fishing, and ample opportunities to absorb the peaceful lake scenery.

 At the rear of the campground, visitors will find the trailhead for the popular Angel Falls/Panther Falls Hiking Trail (trail length 1.7 miles). The swim area has two picnic tables, a roped-off area for swimmers and restrooms. A boat launch area and a fishing peer are near the swimming area, Lake Rabun is home to bass, bream, perch, trout and catfish. Check State regulations before you fish.

 Lake Rabun is located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, a place of exploration and wonder. This National Forest is rich in history and is said to be a hiker's paradise with its winding trails, scenic mountains and rolling hills.

The Best Camping Near Lakemont, Georgia

We had a wonderful camping trip at Lake Rabun. The campground was fairly empty when we went (a weekend in late August). There are two separate camping areas. We stayed in the one across from the entrance to the beach and boat area. I think the other loop is more geared towards RV camping. Some of its sites have electricity and water, but none on our loop seemed to have that.

Our site (32) is known as Charley's Hole for the small waterfall that is just behind the site. It is said to be haunted by Charley, a man who had a stroke on the campsite. It was his favorite site to stay at, and his kids posted a sign on the campsite in his honor. We didn't see any sign of any of the ghosts the camp host warned us about, but we definitely enjoyed the peaceful sound of the creek twisting around the campsite.

Lake Rabun is a beautiful lake tucked away in the mountains. There are lots of opportunities for fishing from the shore, dock, or a boat. There is a no wake zone around the beach and boat ramp, but there are quite a few fast moving boats in other areas. It's a beautiful place to explore by kayak, but I suspect it would be hard to keep balance on a paddleboard outside the no wake zone.

Our trip to Lake Rabun was extremely peaceful. There is no cell coverage there, so you are truly left to enjoy nature at its finest. It's secluded enough that you should plan on bringing everything you need -- the nearest stores are a fairly long and windy drive away, no matter which way you go.

Serene camping spot

Nice quiet campground. It appeared that it’s been there a while and could use a little updating. The loop road for RVs is a little tight. Our site, #65 was at the end of a spur road and the makeshift turnaround area was extremely tight. Only other complaint was the lack of water pressure at our site. I’m not sure if all the sites had low pressure, but I needed up using the water pump to supplement for the shower. 

All that being said, the campground was beautiful and quiet. Just a note, public access to the lakes in this area is limited if you’re looking for swimming, kayaking, etc. and the roads are narrow. It’s easier to enter the campground from the west. 

A little dated!

We scored a nice site (27) in Loop 1 on a first come, first serve situation on a Friday afternoon, The site was great for tent camping and would accommodate a small camper

Pavement in the campground is a bit worn, but shouldn't hinder getting around with any kind of vehicle. The road to the campground from Lakemont/441, Lake Rabun Road, is very narrow and has some tight curves so be aware of this if you have a camper or anything larger than a Sprinter van.

The campground hosts were friendly and helpful.

A pleasant surprise

Campground nestled in the north GA mountains.  Well spaced clean primative and water/electric sites with stream running through the campground. Small but clean bathhouse and play area.  Access alittle difficult on narrow road pulling trailer be sure to follow the directions from the website. Waterfall hiking in the park.

We love this place. Close to fishing, swimming and hiking. And 3 waterfalls to boot.

Enjoyable stay over Labor Day weekend. Enjoyed the hikes from the campground and clean bathrooms.
