The Florida Forest Service will close all campgrounds and recreation areas on State Forests if the county where the State Forest is located is placed under a Tropical Storm or Hurricane WARNING by the National Weather Service. Reservations will be automatically refunded for closures related to tropical weather.

Hernando County Issues Burn Ban The county-wide Burn Ban prohibits all outdoor burning that has not been specifically permitted by the Florida Forest Service. Bon Fires, campfires, and burning of vegetation (yard) debris is not allowed. The burn ban does not pertain to cooking on attended and monitored barbecue equipment, so long as that equipment is a contained gas or charcoal grill. We appreciate your cooperation to ensure the safety of the community and visitors. The burn ban will continue to be in effect until further notice.

Description

The Croom Tract Primitive Camp Zone West is located on the Croom Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest, approximately 9 miles northeast of Brooksville, FL. This campground is a hike in and hike out site only. There is no water and there are no amenities, although some areas may have a fire ring and/or picnic table. The camp zone is delineated by yellow colored bands on the trees and is approximately 5.25 miles from the parking area. Recreational activities featured here are: hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, star gazing, wildflower viewing and nature study.

  • No potable water, no restrooms, it is suggested trail users wear bright clothing during hunting seasons.
  • This is a hike in and hike out only camping area
  • There are no assigned amenities. Some areas may have a fire ring and/or picnic table or bench. Only cooking fires are permitted.
  • No water. You may cache water prior to your arrival.
  • Please contact WSF Dispatch at 352-797-4100 before you begin each day of your outing to verify if prescribed burning will be taking place that day.
  • This is a Wildlife Management Area. It is recommended that visitors wear 500 square inches of Blaze Orange while hiking in the area during hunting seasons. Please check kiosk at parking area or contact myfwc.com for specific hunting seasons and dates.
  • Per Florida Administrative Code, 5I-4006(4)(k), Chainsaw use in camping facilities is prohibited. Operation/use of chainsaws in other areas of the forest requires a Fuel Wood Permit

Directions

**Via I-75:** Take Exit 301 and head east on SR-50/US Hwy 98 S. Continue to the third traffic light. Turn left (north) on Croom-Rital Road. Continue approximately 8.5 miles to the Tucker Hill Trailhead. **Via Suncoast Parkway:** Take the Suncoast Parkway (TR-589) north to the Interchange 46-SR-50 Bear right (east) onto SR-50 and continue through Brooksville following the SR 50 Truck Route. From SR-50 in Brooksville, take US-41 (Broad Street) north to C-480 (Croom Road). Turn right and continue east on C-480 to Tucker Hill (Fire Tower) Trailhead approximately 5 miles.
