The Best Camping Near Granite, Colorado

This is a primitive site with many fire rings and stunning views of Twin Lakes and the surrounding 14ers. There is no official road to pull off, you will just pull of the paved road and follow the dirt path and look for a spot, You can camp in the open or in the trees. You can maneuver a small pop up or off road camper likes ours to most of the spots.

This is not in Lakeview Campground but up the road towards the reservoir.

Twins Lakes/Mt Elbert

the location is half way between 2 mountain towns. there are no stores close, 25 miles at least. the lake is down this year and is quite.

lots of places to pull off the road, can get crowded during weekends in the summer so get there early to grab a good spot if you want a view of the twin lakes.

Camped with a view of the lakes 

Wow. Totally worth checking this out.  There were plenty of other free spots at lower elevation but the view here is worth it. You drive up the mountain and then it’s a very short dirt road to the sites(about 5 in total). My little Saturn car was able to make it with 2 wheel drive easy. No water or amenities. Campfire rings and spots for tents. I wouldn’t bring an rv up there. Enjoy!!

Nice camp ground, gorgeous views day or night.  I didn’t do so good fishing but heard it’s great.

There are about a dozen sites up here. Would definitely recommend a higher clearance vehicle but some are easy to get to. Sites are pretty close together. 

Free Campground, Great Views

We had a wonderful time camping along the Twin Lakes beach! A high clearance vehicle is preferred but we made do without one. There’s plenty of drive-in campsites, but we opted to haul our gear to a secluded spot on the beach. It was definitely worth it! The views were incredible and in the morning we hopped right into the crystal clear water. 

We’ll be back to this spot again for a longer weekend because 1 full day isn’t enough! 

Beautiful Views - Very Peaceful

Dispersed primitive camping area. There is room for larger rigs at the bottom by the stream, and lots of great off-roading sites further up. This is at 9,000ft + so beware of altitude sickness. Cell reception is minimal.

Awesome Camping & Hiking

This was a fantastic spot with stunning views. You drive up a paved road and then look for camp sites in the trees when you see cars pulled over on the side of the road. There are rock rings in the trees to help you identify spots. Leave your car on the paved road unless you have a high clearance vehicle. Get there early on a Friday to get a spot with a view of the lake and mountains! 

Beautiful dispersed camping spot!

I spent one phenomenal afternoon and night here, it is just after you come down the mountain pass. The views were literally surreal! My dog and I spent some time down on the beach throwing the tennis ball and then the evening up on the mountain site. 

Things to know: 
•Verizon has service there 
•There is a general store close but it was closed fairly early and I wouldn’t rely on that, make sure your cooler is full! 
•There are some vault toilets down the road 10 min near the general store. 
•Roughly an hour (20 miles) from Aspen. 
•Rough terrain but not for long, paved up to the sites then rocky as you pull off into your spot. 
•I saw small pull behinds there. 


Worth the stay! 

I would say my first dispersed camping experience was a success. It was a bit cold but definitely a experience worth having for my family. Definitely worth a stop if you're traveling across country.

Sept 29- Oct 3 2020
After realizing that the NF service closed all the campgrounds early (no weather in the forecast) we wound up at this dispersed campground area. 
We scored a sweet spot overlooking the many peaks and a glimpse of the Twin Lakes. 
There are no services here and a lot of the higher up sites need a 4x4 but we made it in a Ford Transit and found an easier site to get to. 
At the end of Sept beginning Oct, it was about 30 degrees at night. Still, with plenty of firewood to be had in this area, we bundled up and had a great stay. 

10k feet in heaven 

Easily one of my favorite places to camp in Colorado! It’s a must stay every year for me. Killer views, great hiking, beach days and a peaceful location.

Awesome awesome awesome views. I got my Tacoma through the trees without a scratch. There was only one other vehicle there when I was there. Very very cold at night during May so dress warm. There are no bathrooms. Primitive camping only in this part. 

Dispersed

We stayed here the night of Friday 5/28 and left in the morning. We got there around 4:30pm. A lot of the sites with trees and beautiful views on top of the hill were taken, but we scored this gem that was a bit challenging to get to. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is a must. You follow the rocky dirt roads to find places with rock rings. It was the most beautiful campsite I've ever seen. This campsite was free, but there were also a few more accessible spots open down by the lake for a fee. You probably won't have any problems finding a place to camp here, but get there early for the really insane views-- it's worth it!

About 5 min up the mountain from the lakes. Lots of dispersed camping available. Our site had an amazing view of the lakes. Occasional dirt bike riding around. Some campers run loud music late into the night. Early June, lake water is very cold, but refreshing for a quick dip.

Only downside was it was a dry campsite and the area for a tent was rough.

Soild campsite

Awesome awesome views. I was able to get my Tacoma through the wooded area and we camped near a bunch of trees. After setting up camp we realized there was a few spots that were easier to access near the ledge. We went in late May. It was super cold at night. Bring plenty of warm clothes and fire wood.

Great spot at the north side, campsite was lower than the water line but once you go up past the rocks, the 360 views are breathtaking 

Hidden beauty

Twin Lakes, outside of Leadville, is one of my go to spots within a few hours of Lone Tree (Denver). While not true Alpine Lakes, the twins have crisp, clear water great for fishing, kayaking, Paddleboarding, and, if you’re brave enough, swimming! Even better, visit and walk into the old Interlocken Hotel down a short hike along the lakes, following either the Continental Divide Trail or the Colorado Trail.
