## Overview

 Red Fir Flat Group Campground is located on the southern slope of Mt. Shasta at 6,400 feet in elevation. Snowpack in this location may extend into late June on heavy snow years, and usually sees late season snowfall in early November, possibly October. It is a popular site for meditation/retreat groups. Maximum stay limit is 7 days per group and or indvidual(s) 
## Recreation

 Most visitors enjoy the peace and solitude of the forest setting. Several hiking trails are located nearby, including the trail to the historic stone cabin at timberline owned and operated by the Sierra Club Foundation. Also within a few miles are Upper and Lower Panther Meadows, the access trail to South Gate Meadows and the trail to Gray Butte.
## Natural Features

 The campground is situated in an old growth forest of Shasta red fir. The forest provides plenty of shade and has open sunny spots as well. There is no view of the upper mountain from this location; however, views to the west and south include the Trinity Alps, Mount Eddy, and Castle Crags. 
## Nearby Attractions

 The area offers hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and climbing routes to the summit of Mt. Shasta. Mt. Shasta City is 10 miles away and provides full services including grocery stores and restaurants.

The Best Camping Near Mount Shasta, California

I stayed at this campsite the night before my group and I climbed up to Helen Lake to setup basecamp. I got to the trailhead around 3:30 and hung out around the area. The rangers are amazing, super friendly and offer a lot of information about the climb. There are campsites all over the place, but I stayed in my car so I don't have any information about the sites themselves. You have unreal views of Mt Shasta and when I was there the gate was locked to go up to Old Ski Bowl so I took my bike to go check it out. It was super cool!

Great campsite for summit attempts

There are grest amounts of trees throughout the cam ground, fire pits are abundant and lots of space from you neighbors. We have stayed 3 nights, no hastles or pay was required. 

Good open camp area. 

We went to this campground but there is a bunch of signs about reservations only, even though it said first come first serve on the website- (also there was not a single person in the actual campground.) plus, if you continue down the road (it looks like a big loop- GAIA is a good app for navigation) there is dispersed free camping that looks the exact same 👍🏼 and no fines! only recommendation is to show up during daylight because the dirt roads are a little bumpy and so hard to see after dark! we stayed the weekend before halloween, no snow but low 40's at night! 

ALSO, for any 4WD lovers, we got some good wheeling in too around here!
