Peltier Bridge Primitive Campground — Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Peltier Bridge Primitive Campground sits within Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area off Highway 299, accessed by a gravel road that reviewers describe as manageable in a standard sedan but narrow enough to limit larger vehicles. The campground is drive-in only, with a 15-foot RV maximum, and reservations must be made in advance through recreation.gov since passes are not available on-site. The nine sites are spread well apart from one another, with sites 7, 8, and 9 positioned farthest from the entrance and offering more seclusion. Tree cover is dense, which means solar panels and satellite devices are unlikely to function reliably here.

The creek running alongside the sites is the campground's defining feature. Campers consistently mention falling asleep to the sound of moving water, and on hot days the river provides a way to cool off, though getting to the water from some sites requires navigating brush or a steep grade. Trails in the surrounding area pass through terrain marked by old fire damage, though the campground itself retains significant tree cover and shade. Nearby, Horse Camp Primitive Campground and Brandy Creek Primitive Campground give campers additional options within the same recreation area.

Pit toilets at the campground entrance are consistently noted as clean, and bear boxes are on-site. No running water is available. "Right next to a creek/river so great water sounds all night," notes Stephanie W., who also found ample downed branches for campfires. At $20 per night, this campground works well for tent campers and small vehicle travelers who want direct creek access and a forested setting within a national recreation area.

Peaceful and quiet

There's nice hiking around, clean bathrooms. There's a lot of tree cover, so bad for solar or satellite.

Road to get there is dirt road, but we'll maintained.

Awesome spot by the creek

There’s like 9 or so sites all pretty far apart. The creek is super beautiful. It was really hot during the day like 90s but site #9 is shady and the river is freezing so it’s easy to stay cool. Gets pretty cold at night. Even with the campground almost full, it’s quiet and peaceful. Pit toilets are very clean!

Very nice site

Small campground. Easy entry off 299. A gravel road and car accessible. Bear boxes. Pit toilets at entry, 200 meters from Campsite 9. River view but access a challenge through brush or steep grade.

Quiet Little Campground

We were able to arrive at 9pm and still get a spot through recreation.gov. No running water. There were a lot of branches on the ground for us to be able to build a fire. Right next to a creek/river so great water sounds all night. Don’t think we could have fit more than 1 car to park there.

Nice campsite, very close to Redding for supplies and access, but still qui

This campsite was very nice and clean. Each spot was decent. #6, 8, and 9 probably your best bets if they are open. 4 and 5 are right next to the entrance. There's a small narrow dirt road, but easily doable even in a loaded down sedan. You can only buy the pass online so make sure you get it ahead of time.

Even as close to Redding as this was there were no highway or "civilization" sounds at night which was awesome. Plenty of frog noises though!

The drive up there was lots of old fire damage, but the site itself had lots of green (and poison oak!) The nearby trails were all in sight of the burned areas however.
