I really like this campsite although it's a bit of a trek. The easiest route here directly from Hwy 166 via Pine Canyon Road is sadly locked private property so you must take Sierra Madre Road all the way to Miranda Pine campground and then take about a 12-14 mile road down into Horseshoe Canyon. A 2-3 hour 4x4 drive from 166. But the reward is pretty good, nice flat and shaded campsites with fire rings and this is a fire allowed campsite as of this review. Go in the Spring or Fall, Summer gets pretty hot and there are usually road closures in the winter to protect the roads from damage when they're wet.
While you have to bring all your own water, TP, and pack everything back out it's drive up camping so no big deal. I like to camp to be away from everybody and I've been here three times in that last 2-3 years and never seen a soul. Most people out here stop at the Miranda Pine campsite which has great views but it's windy and buggy.
If you keep driving and through this site and take a right (North) up 11N04A you'll end up at the Brookshire Campground. The Los Padres interactive map has this campsite mis-located but it is correct on Google Maps.
You need the standard Adventure Pass for $5 a night but I've never even seen a ranger out here.
