Beautiful

This was a very last minute booking, and the only place available, but it was absolutely gorgeous! There are some lovely trails to walk here, and the campsite it self is a little oasis! The camp hosts are so friendly and even showed us a snake she had caught, because we had never seen one before! I would seriously recommend this place, there is a lot of wildlife to be wary of, but if you know your stuff, then definitely head here! It’s wonderful, affordable, and everyone was very friendly!

Not happy with our get away

We decided to go camping on a Wednesday and Thursday thinking it would be much quieter than going over the weekend. Quiet time is at 10pm-6am. Our first night the group behind us were up till about 130am. They were loud but tolerable. Our second night. A large group in the spot right next to us didn’t even show up till 9pm. They spent about two and a half hours setting up 4 tents on one small camp site. They were also using what sounded like using a shop vac in reverse to set up multiple air mattresses. They were so loud and obnoxious until 230am. They smoked weed throughout the night. Then at 6am when they were up and just as loud. We got up and let our dog out of the tent. Their dog was off leash and came charging at our dog whom is sick with an autoimmune disease who can’t even walk, let alone can’t fight off a Rottweiler dog. Didn’t apologize or anything. So we packed up and left. None of the camp hosts went around to be sure the noise levels were down after 10pm. People are just allowed to do whatever they wanted. We liked our spot. It was a large campsite. We were so sad to not be able to sleep well due to ignorant people. So if you’re looking for a place to party all night… this is the campground for you.

Tucked Away Oasis

Wow! Never would have imagined this camp site would have looked the way it did. We were tucked up into the hill side with neighbors far enough sway to make it very private. There were no showers so we brought our travel one and hung it from a branch. It was May but got cold enough at night but was absolutely perfect during the day. We say rattle snakes in our walk. Deer walking around the trails. No market but the town is a short drive away.

Last Minute Getaway!

Really last minute camping trip I wanted to have, stumbled upon Hanna Flat Campgrounds and I highly recommend it!

Campground hosts are super sweet and they give you a rundown of the the whole campground once you get there. They sell firewood in case you run out or forget, same price as when you buy it in the town.

I went during a severe California drought so I understand that there are no “flushing” bathrooms working. Porta-potties we’re available which I didn’t mind much.

Very nice but can be busy

I have stayed here a few times and had great times. Quiet mountain campground not too far from town. Weekend summer crowds can be loud and packed. Had the unfortunate experience of a large group in camp who were loud and messy. Also beware you MUST pay $8 a night CASH ONLY for additional vehicles. We had to make a late ATM run since we don’t carry cash when we camp.

Worth the Hassle

Bit of a hassle getting up the washboard dirt road from Fawnskin but what you gain is worth it! No cell service except legend has it that site 37 has service if you stand on the rocks. We were at site 22, got occasional Verizon service in one corner of the driveway. Steep incline down to picnic table, tent area, and Bear locker. Almost no shade at this site. The draw for this campground even with pit and chemical toilets and little shade in the Westernmost loop, is access to the hiking trail (camp near the #50-60 sites to get closer to trailhead. Southern Sierra vibe, so close to Big Bear Lake and its amenities but you really feel isolated. Gets crowded and can be noisy on weekends but midweek is quite empty and usually peaceful.

Nice last minute spot

We found this campsite while we were in big bear and called the number listed who is a representative of the state park not the campsite. She was wonderful and told us how to get there. Drive was not bad we made it in a jetta safely. They were first come first serve and came back around to check you in. Spot was a bit small but nice. Walking down your find some great rocks to go exploring and a trail to head right off into. Bathrooms were closed and Porta potties available and wood on site.

Perfect

We drove up here blind not knowing what to expect. We had the time of our lives! First time was on 4th of July so we could still see fireworks from the top of the hill, so cool! All 4 of us fit in a small spot but there were plenty of larger ones. Second time we came was during winter and man was that fun!

Hanna Flat, CA Lots of Shade

Hanna Flat campgrounds are filled with lots of shade due to the big beautiful trees. The parking spots are a bit small in some campsites. Each site included a table, fire ring and bear safe locker. Each site was spread out and lots of space for 2-4 tents. The distance to downtown Big Bear is around 25 minutes. The drive up to the campsite was a bit bumpy, although the trail was a nice view. There is a small store before you start the trail with wood, ice, drinks and miscellaneous last minute camp essentials.

Nice escape during Covid!

This is a great campground near Big Bear lake. It's down a fun dirt road that my Explorer had no problem with. My 11 year old son was beside me holding on for dear life as I cracked up with joy! Who doesn't love hauling butt down a dirt road?! Low profile cars will make it in good weather, just go slow! The campground was filled with trees and its close to a trail that we took the kids on. Toilets weren't bad at all and the camp host was nice. I will definitely go back.

Cozy and Accommodating

We arrived at Hanna Flat campground around 11 am on Friday, August 21. First thing about the campground is that the road to get to it is pretty rough. Totally doable for any car, but take your time and be careful on the road! There are some pretty massive bumps you won't notice, so stick to the speed limit! Almost as soon as we got there, the camp host, Penny greeted us. We were told to find any spot marked "open", so we did. After setting up, we turned the reserved sign around... do not do this! We weren't aware of the camp protocol and because of this, we ended up making a little trouble. Check in is at 2pm, which we didn't know upon arrival at 11am, so later in the day when Penny came back around, she had another party set up to camp in our spot, where we had already set up our gear. We ended up working it out with the other party and were able to keep our campsite. The host, Penny eventually made her way back around and we were able to pay her, get some firewood, and offer our apologies. She was extremely sweet and happy we were able to resolve it between ourselves. The rest of the evening was wonderful. Easy parking, simple entry and exit, campfire rings, and animal-proof storage boxes. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous, our neighbors couldn't have been better, and even through a lot of issues, the host was accommodating, patient, and very friendly. We will definitely be camping here again if we ever make our way back to California.

Beautiful campground

We stayed up here mid-June and had a blast. Great weather, awesome host, and a well maintained campground. We stayed in site #60 which we loved. Plenty of space. There’s a trail that starts at the campground and heads north. We loved it, and it was good for both kids and dogs. We prefer staying here over Serrano

Basic camping

Overall a great campground. They have several reservable sites and several first come first serve sites. The campground is very well maintained. There are areas with several trees and areas with few trees. Some sites with privacy and others that are right on top of each other. This is typically where we go for our first camping trip of the summer. Depending on the weekend it can fill up so we always make reservations. The lake is a short drive away and there are plenty of off-road trails to explore in the area. The campground also has a trailhead in it that allows you to hike to the lake or up the mountain a few miles.

Overall great campsite

There are two sides to the site, reserved only and first come first serve. Both are well maintained and have portapottys. There is a decent trail that is behind some sites on the reserved side that is good for hiking or MTB (I rode MTB). The road to the site gets pretty rough. It is bumpy and very rutted in some spots, I saw a few cars but I would recommend something with decent ground clearance. Also after rain I can see some areas becoming impassable for cars. They have bear lockers at almost every site so trash doesn’t need to be hung in trees. Price when I went (memorial day weekend) was 31$ cash only for 1 night. Cash only!! they don’t take card. They also sell bundles of wood for 8$ but it’s cheaper in town. Overall great site and I would definitely visit again.

Partially shaded campground off dirt road

This is a nice campground that is located a little north of Big Bear. There is a dirt road that must be driven a couple miles to the campground, but it was well maintained and was easy to drive in our mini van.

The campground hosts were great and treated all of us very well. They did make a bigger deal of rattle snakes than they did with bears. There are food lockers.

The toilets were for the most part clean. There is running water faucets located at various points in the campground.

There is a hiking trail that starts from this campground.

Most sites are partially shaded and maintained very well. It is a very busy campground with some site fairly close to others. Very limited to no cell service.

Near Big Bear.

Hanna Flat is off a dirt road near Big Bear. There's about 90 campsites, and I'd say about 10 really cool sites. The Pct is near by and has a couple of trails right there. Campsites are pretty spaced out and have a bit of privacy.

Off the beaten path, but still popular

This campground is definitely off the main drag. It's not quite 4WD territory, but you will spend some time on a twisting bumpy dirt road to get there. Given that, we were surprised when we arrived to see that the campground was still almost full (we were, admittedly, visiting on a peak fall weekend). Despite being full, we found this campground to be much quieter than those lakeside. Maybe the folks dedicated enough to come up to Hanna Flat are cut from better cloth.

The grounds themselves are nice, if not exceptional. There's some hiking/biking trails available right from the campground, which is delightful, and the surrounding land was quite pretty.
