BLM's Redding Field Office manages Douglas City Campground, a 24-site riverside campground tucked into a narrow canyon along the Trinity River in northern California. The road down to the campground drops at a steep grade, roughly 12%, so drivers with trailers should approach with care. Once in, the sites are paved and mostly level, with several backing directly up to the river.
The campground has seen recent infrastructure improvements, including new restroom and shower facilities and resurfaced pads. Sites vary in sun exposure: those along the perimeter and set against the hillside tend to get more shade, while center sites can be exposed during the heat of summer, when temperatures regularly reach 100°F. Campers report the campground fills on weekends in summer, while weekday visits allow more site selection. The Trinity River runs alongside the property and gives access to swimming holes, small rapids, and slower pools. Anglers and gold panners have tried their luck here, with mixed results. Poison oak is present throughout, particularly in sunny spots.
Cell coverage is spotty and reportedly limited to daylight hours. No hookups are available, and while a dump station is listed, at least one recent visitor noted it was absent from the area. Steiner Flat Campground and Steel Bridge Campground are among the other options along this stretch of the Trinity for those planning a longer stay or scouting campgrounds near Douglas City. "Babbling water to sleep to," notes Katie P., and that detail alone brings many campers back.
Description
The campground is now closed for the season and will reopen in early May, weather permitting.
Camp on the edge of the Trinity River in one of 23 tent/trailer campsites. Popular with fisherman and pleasure boaters alike, this clear, cold section of the river is world famous for its fly fishing. Paddlers enjoy the narrow valley with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas fir, Oaks, and Madrone trees coating the walls of the canyons. If you would like more adrenaline rush, the waters below Pigeon Point rage at class III-V for white water enthusiasts. Those interested in a more relaxing experience can enjoy the abundant camping options in the area or head for the trail with your friends, horses, or dog. If you would like to stay at the river's edge, you can always swim, fish or do a little gold panning. The river can be accessed from many locations along this stretch of the Trinity River.
