Milky Way Heaven

Easily one of my favorite places! The views here are like nothing else, perfect place without reception, fresh mountain air away from everything and yet close to a cute little town for chili cheese nachos or tackle. Owned and operated by BLM land, so it’s free to the public (first come first serve) but be sure to go prepared with your permit to have a fire and have the proper tools to extinguish it completely. Preservation of this land is imperative with rangers patrolling consistently and fines are unforgiving, there are seasons fire is not allowed and will be posted at entry. There are no specified camping spots, no restrooms, no available water, and no sewer or trash dumping areas available. Just the wilderness at its finest.

Milky Way and Rocks

Alabama Hills is a popular area to see the beauty of natural rock formations. This is BLM land so there's no campground amenities.  However you can camp here for free in many dispersed locations.  Just look around and look for spots that you can park and camp at. There are plenty of sites back into the rocks. There's cell service where the main road starts but not much after that. This is a great place to view the Milky Way and watch the sunrise. This is a great place to go rock climbing.

The views

Fabulous views of the rounded monolithic boulders fronting the Eastern Sierra. This is a large dispersed camping area with no facilities. Just the beauty and silence of the nature. The area was used, and still occasionally is, for the movie industry. You can even see the occasional jet fighter training here. Go see the Movie Museum in Lone Pine it’s worth it. The Reward Mine is near here and don’t forget to spend some time at Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp. We stayed here in May

Amazing and free!

Great place for a wide range of activities including rock climbing, hiking around mt Whitney or exploring the mind blowing rock formations. Drive up and pitch a tent and you’re set! It’s very quiet and peaceful, also an amazing view of the stars! Beautiful sunrise and sunset as well. Will definitely go back! (BLM land so carry out what you take in, including waste!)

BLM camping at it's finest

One of my all time favorite places to camp in fall and spring. Not too hot, not too cold. Absolutely stunning views. Seriously. Unbelievable views of the Eastern Sierra's from almost anywhere. There are a ton of sites so drive around until you find one you like. Lots of premade fire pits to use. Sites are pretty spread out so you won't really see/hear your neighbors. Roads are flat and my small sedan had no problem navigating.

Can't beat the views

Can't beat the views in this BLM area! Not only can you off-road and explore all it has to offer you can hike or go into town with a quick drive. Love the dispersed camping and exploring you can do here. Nobody to bother you. This is our most favorite camping spot to date. The weather is fun to watch and the views of mt Whitney are incredible.

The VIEWS!!!

High desert meets Sierra Nevadas in a magical rock playground with views of My Whitney. This spot literally has it all. Right off the 395, you have access to civilization and amenities. It's dispersed camping, but heavily used sites are well established. The deeper into the park you venture, the more primitive and less crowded it becomes. Take a quick drive and you're at Whitney Portal. We lucked out and had 360 degrees of the best views ever! Loads to do here. Popular for rock climbing, hiking, spectacular night sky, wildflowers, photography. Even though it's right off the highway you feel like you're on another planet. No facilities. Pack it in, pack it out. Hands down, one of the best camp spots I've ever had!

Bucket List Camping

This is one of my all time favorite camping sites. It’s just a few miles west of Bishop. The site is famous for filming westerns and commercials. The rock formations are incredible along with the views of the Sierras. It’s dispersed camping at its best. You need to get a site before early afternoon since the word is out on this place. We drove a few miles in to one of the higher elevations sites. We came back just a few weeks later since this was such an epic place. Highly recommended if you are traveling along Highway 395 and heading up the eastern Sierra Mountains. There are no facilities at this site. You will need to bring everything including, water, food, and toilet. Even in the Fall when we visited it was very hot in the day from the direct sun. You will need to plan your visit carefully and have a heater at night and AC in the day. Great place for climbing and hiking. The town of Bishop is very close. They have a visitors center with a dump for black water and also fresh water and toilets. Site is a good location for those preparing to hike Mt Whitney.

We absolutely love Alabama Hills. BLM land so you can camp anywhere. So many beautiful views. You can see Mount Whitney in the distance. 4 wheel drive isn’t required but definitely recommend. No bathrooms or water around. A lot of old movies were filmed in the hills. We went off roading to a nearby mine, you can drive all the way in the mine which was rad.

Awesome

This is the go to free camping area that my friends and I go to when we don’t want a campground. Its dispersed camping in the Alabama hills. No toilets or amenities so thats a little bummer. Its might be worth it to pay $8 a night at a campground if you want easy access to toilets. Tuttle creek is up the road and is a good option.

This is a great dispersed camping area at the base of the E. Sierras. Camping can be along any one of several dirt roads, explore a bit til you find just the right spot (existing sites are easy to pick out)! The town of Lone Pine is nearby but make sure you bring plenty of food and water. Pack in/Pack out. With Mt. Whitney as your back drop you really can't go wrong here.

Excellent dispersed camping in eastern Sierras

If youre comfortable with primitive dispersed camping, this is the place to go in the eastern Sierras. Like walking on mars, the landscape is amazing with endless boulders and unobstructed views of Mt Whitney. I was there in April, and it was quite windy so be prepared for that. If youre setting up a tent, make sure youre able to stake it down securely. With the ground being dry and rocky make sure to pick a spot accordingly. The area is ideal for RV or car camping.

We got some early morning wind and rain, but were rewarded full crisp rainbow that lasted a good 30 minutes, stretching over the landscape. It was quite the scene.

Loaction wise, youre close enough to the town of Lone Pine if you need groceries, laundry or shower, or feel like having a bite or drink at a local watering hole. It also feels far enough away civilization to have a genuine wilderness experience, and little light pollution from town. I look forward to going back!

deserty, dry, but plenty of space

This is one of our intermediate stops if I'm going on a weekend trip to Mammoth. There are a pretty substantial amount of off-road/mtb trails in this area, if that's your thing. Also, you might get the stray hiker trying to make it to the Mount Whitney trailhead.

Desert landscapes aren't usually my thing, but there's plenty of space. I'd avoid in the summer unless there's something you really want to do here - it got fairly hot even in March. Also, it's free, so for the price I can't really complain. Just pack in/pack out!!

Alabama Hills, CA 36°35'57.7"N 118°06'32.4"W

Alabama Hills California presents a varied landscape. From the picture above you can plainly see the desert floor to MT. Whitney, snow capped in March of 2018.

“Its like this place was made for exploring and with no end in sight”

With a last minute decision to make the 2.5 hour trek from our home in Valencia, California. Makayla packed up after her early release and headed North via the I-14 and CA-395.

The prior week had heavy rainstorms, high winds and the potential for below freezing temps. The unclear conditions mixed with the reality of fast moving flash floods in the area nearly cancelled the entire trip.

The area and what we recommend Access to the area is relatively easy. The trails are mostly groomed and with a most CUV's, Soft-roaders and even some 2wd vehicles can make the most of the area. If you want to get to the more interesting bits, like up Mt. Whitney, you will need a high clearance 4wd with Low Range and purposed tires. The scenery is nearly second to none and will not disappoint.

Camping is first come - first serve. There are no fees as this is an open area so plan accordingly as I am sure holidays can get packed. No shower or restroom facilities are available, so bring the necessary kit.

Alabama Hills may look familiar to many of you due to the simple fact that it has been seen in a large amount of movies. Westerns to Iron Man, the Hills were so widely used, one of the roads is appropriately titled "Movie Road".

Photographers alike can also take advantage of very little light pollution. Meaning that the low light Milky Way shots are considerably easier.

Alabama Hills Cafe is hands down the best place to grab breakfast for an early out when heading back to civilization. After a few days in the wilderness, there is nothing wrong with letting someone else do the cook and do the dishes for you
