Den of Devils

What an amazing park! Stayed in Devils Den over spring break several years ago. Was cold and even snowed on one of the days that we were there. Camps sites are big and they have a fire pit, picnic table and a large gravel pit for the tents. Lots of hiking trails to explore and a river, if your brave enough to get in the freezing water.

The park rangers are great! Very knowledgeable and friendly.

Back country review - Butterfield Trail

This review is for the Butterfield Trail in Devils Den. You have to hike in to get to theses spots. If you start at the traditional Devils Den and park at the pedestrian bridge you have a nice challenging hike up to the back country portion of the park. You start hiking along a river and after a mile or so you start your upward journey. The trail is generally in good shape but if it has been raining, beware as some of the trail is also used for horses which makes the trail sometimes tough to make it through as it gets pretty mushy. My favorite spot is about halfway through right on a river that flows a blueish color that doesn't make you want to even filter and drink the water. The spots are level and secluded but you sometimes find trash as people don't abide by the leave no trace principle. I bring all my own water on the trail but there are a few spots you can filter. We have found many snakes here and some are poisonous. BEWARE! The geography has is pretty unique and flash flooding is common. Be very aware of your surroundings and watch the river if you are in a rain storm. You must check in at the ranger's station before you do any back country camping in the park. The trail is a pleasant longer trail in the area and is a must but I would recommend trying this trail in the Spring or late fall.

Great time, good amenities

The campsites are nice, and there are a lot to choose from, especially in the off season. It can get crowded and busy May-September. There is a park office with snacks, cool nature patches, and information about the area.

Good trails that range from 1 to 17 miles. Be sure to get a map so you take the right one.

Secluded

This state park is challenging to locate, especially at night. Familiarize yourself with the directions and try to arrive before dark.

There are many campsites available in many different areas of the park. Most of the sites are very private, have nearby facilities with showers, fire pits, tables, and trash bins. The sites all have access to trails and are close to water activities. The trails that are available are challenging, offer spectacular views and some history. There is back country hiking available, the park prefers that you register for a permit 24 hours in advance to accessing the back country trails. Some trails available are appropriate for mountain biking, however depending on the popularity of the trail is the level of maintenance that the trail receives. This state park is excellent for families because there are plenty of activities available that interest young kids.

Awesome place to visit

If you love hiking in rocky areas this is the place to go. Has a stream flowing where you can swim or kayak. Has all the hookups if you have a RV or if you want to tent camp it has this too. Book early if you know you will be in this area it if filled up most of the time.

Humid yet beautiful!!

My favorite camping spot yet. Aside from the extreme humidity this was a great family getaway. Pool, great trails, and the creek/river kept my kids entertained and worn out!

Wonderful trails

We stayed here when the weather was pretty cold so they didn't have most of the activities open like the pool, cafe, etc. It didn't matter this was such a gorgeous State Park. The trails were beautiful and well maintained. The camp office had quite a few camping supplies just in case you forget something and the staff was great! The little nature center part could use an update. We got up each morning and watched the wildlife down in the creek that runs near the campsites. The bathrooms were excellent! Hot showers and clean as a whistle. I'll be back for sure.

Beautiful park with lots to do

This is a gorgeous park, even on a rainy weekend. I stayed in Campground E, one of 5 campgrounds in the park, not including the equestrian campground or the walk in tent sites off of Campground A. E was a large campground, with mixed tent and RV camping, with some sites along Lee Creek. Each site was well equipped with paved parking pads, nice flat sites for tents (some gravel pads, some just grassy areas), and many of the spots had electic and water. All had campfire rings, picnic tables, and grills. There were two nice hiking trails leading out of this particular campground, and some of the other campgrounds (A in particular) also had good trails. The bathhouses were really nice and modern and very clean. What I liked about this park, besides the great hiking trails, were all of the historic CCC buildings. There is a really neat scenic overlook that was built by the CCC near the Yellow Rock trailhead, and if you step in the visitor's center, you are actually in the old CCC motor pool. There is a really nice statue and plaque commemorating the work of the CCC in building the park near the lake and cafe.

Favorite

Devils Den remains one of my families favorite places to visit.  The hiking trails are challenging but doable for anyone.  On this trip we camped in campground A.  All sites have a level area to set up your tent, table and fire pit.  The rushing creek next to site 1 offers easy access to the water to cool off during the heat of the day.  If you visit after a heavy ran the cave hike is amazing with a couple of nice wet weather water falls.  Reservations are recommend.

Devils Den State Park lives up to the intrigue of its name

Devils Den has great views and great hiking trails. It's listed in National Geographic's Guide to State Parks as one of the top parks in the South Central region. It is pretty good.

Unfortunately when I visited Devils Den there was "Ride the Dam" Bike trials championships going on and the park was crowded. I didn't make it to the Yellow Rock Overlook but I was still able to enjoy the park.

The campgrounds were average in condition but there were a lot of trees and plenty of space between camp sites. The Campground was full when i arrived so I couldn't stay the night but I was able to spend a lot of time at the park. If you are not into tent camping they have great cabins that are built in the woods and have excellent scenery. It is not as modern as Lake Fort Smith has just thirty minutes away, but it is an amazing place. It has a restaurant, pool, and a ton of outdoors activities. It is a place where most families can have fun.

This place is so cool!

So being from Utah I wouldn't say Arkansas has "mountains" But they do have these really cool cliff rocks. We stayed at Devils Den State Park and the camping was great but the scenery was awesome. I highly suggest hiking the Yellow Rock trail just outside of the campground. The large rock "mountain" it leads you too are so much fun to play on. They have tiny caves and are incredibly easy to craw around on. P.S make sure and bring lots of bug spray.

Pricey but plenty of activities

These sites are a little on the pricey side ranging from $12 a night to $32. However, you could easily get a satisfying and full vacation from this location. Most campgrounds are fun for a night or two, but here you would be able to see something new each day for a week without getting bored. There are miles and miles of trails that feature both historical sites and scenic views. There are plenty of activities for the whole family ranging from fishing to wildlife watching. There are also kids only events if you have children. The sites are very nice and have picnic tables as well as fire rings. Some sites offer electric and water hookups for RVs.

Welcome to the den

Devils Den is a great place to camp and hike for those who wanna get closer to nature. The campground is clean, but the showers could use some work. I gave it a 4 star rating just because the regulars are a little sketchy and we had to deal with the Ranger a few times because of them. Overall it's a great place to camp.

Love the mountains!

Stopped at Devils Den State Park on my way home from Missouri. Located. 11333 West Arkansas Hwy. 74 West Fork, AR 72774 It was so beautiful we winded up staying 4 nights. There was so much to see. I really loved the trail up by the caves. I loved all the unique rock formations. I enjoyed the learning trail. I got a little book that gave identification of plants and trees. The plants and trees had wood plaqus with a number on it. Then you looked up the number in the book. I learned trees I didn't know. The trail was beautiful and at the end of Trail there was a beautiful suspension bridge crossing over Lee creek. I also took a hike down the bike trails along the creek. It was wonderful camping. We we on the upper road campground and it was an awesome view looking down at everything. There weren't many campers so it was really peaceful. They have all kind of camping. They have nice hike in trail camping too. I loved going to sleep hearing the waterfall, crickets, frogs, and birds. In the evening I saw bats flying from there caves and feeding. I had a blast wading in the creek. I loved being surrounded by thick lush forest. I am looking forward to returning.
