While I camped many times as a kid, my first adult camping was at Big Lake. What a great place to learn to camp. Beautiful scenery, quiet, a big lake, fishing, and all away from civilization.
Like my title implies, this is where you go if you really want to “get away” from It all! This gorgeous campground is remote, very remote. But oh so perfect for taking the time to unplug and enjoy some truly breathtaking nature. Many of the campsites are a quick walk away from the water. Speaking of water, there’s lots of opportunity to fish! There are vault toilets close to most sites, though some require a bit more of a walk. There is a “fishing store” and check in building where odds and ends including firewood can be purchased. Definitely worth the drive up from Tucson!
Had the best time at Big Lake, AZ. First off though, reserve a camp site on-line. I didn’t but got lucky because we arrived on a Thursday. The scenery is beautiful. The weather was beautiful and the fishing was good.
This place was amazing friendly people and quiet campers. Great place to disconnect from life for awhile.
Several full-hookup spots, wildlife, friendly-helpfull Hosts $29.00 full hookup with senior Parks Card
Hubs and I took a trip up to Big Lake, AZ (near Alpine, AZ) and stayed in site 20 at Grayling Campground (one of 5 or 6 campgrounds within the Big Lake Recreation Area.)
Due to COVID, we couldn't use the showers, which are about a mile away, but we did enjoy the nice days and cool nights. The sites are large and well spaced. Site 20 is especially rocky, uneven and rooty which is why I didn't give this campground a 5.
There are 2 toilet buildings. One is a vault (single) toilet with no sink and the other toilet building with flushing toilets and a sink, but no soap and no paper towels.
We were there for 4 days during the week and enjoyed the peace and quiet.
There are lots of elk bugling at night and we even heard an owl (sounded huge) on our last night there.
The camp hosts were wonderful. We paid $20 a night.
There are water spigots throughout the campground and the water is safe and tasty to drink.
I recommend this campground and we will be going back.
Went up for Labor Day weekend with my kids. We had a blast. Campsites were nice, bathrooms were well maintained (actually had flushing toilets). The lake was beautiful. We rented a boat from the marina and spent about 3 hours fishing. Perfect weather. Wildlife: we saw blue jays, squirrels, chipmunks, as well as several elk who wandered through camp in the early evening. We will be going up to Big Lake again next year, if not sooner.
Great campsites within walk distance of the lake! Down fall is the campsites are big (enough room for all your camp friends) but you can only have two cars per site. Don’t let this keep you away! Plenty of hiking trails and great camp hosts!
Great place to camp
Fishing was scare, sites were nice, lake was pretty!
The elevation is 9000 ft. So it will affect your breathing somewhat however it will also take your breathe away from the beauty. Various types of camping, good fishing and boating.
Amazing scenery, fishing and beautiful fall colors. Not crowded unless you go on a holiday weekend. Numerous paid and dispersed campsites.
