Twin Lakes Cabin (AK)

Twenty-three miles west of Petersburg, Twin Lakes Cabin operates as a US Forest Service rental within Tongass National Forest. The $40 nightly fee covers a cabin accommodation rather than traditional tent or RV camping, with no RV access permitted. Rough road conditions require careful vehicle consideration for the drive-in approach.

The forested setting includes open terrain near creek, river, and lake features that support fishing and swimming activities. Reservations are available through the Forest Service system, though pets are not permitted on the property. For additional options in the region, campers can explore camping areas around Petersburg. Book well ahead during summer months when cabin demand peaks.

Fee Info

Reservations can be made the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance of cabin arrival. Cabin reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation between May 1 and September 30, and 10 consecutive days from Oct. 1 through April 30. There are no discounts for Alaska cabin rentals with Golden Age and Golden Passports. Only one change per reservation for all Alaska cabins is allowed. Change is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation; after one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the current reservation and re-book the new dates.

Directions

Located on the north side of the Stikine River near Figure 8 Lake (Twin Lakes), in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The cabin is 17 miles from Wrangell, accessible by shallow draft boat or float plane during moderate to high river levels. A minimum 16-foot river level is generally needed for float plane landings. Low river levels limit small boat access as Hooligan Slough becomes shallow or blocked. A tide of 14 feet or higher is required for a shallow draft boat to cross the tide flats. The river is normally ice-free May to October. Please check local conditions ahead of time by calling the Wrangell Ranger District at (907) 874-2323.
