Very private

We were the only ones here and tucked away behind all of the trees and fireweed. Road noise was mild and it got fairly dark under the cover of the trees. We didn’t even get out of our van because the mosquitoes were so bad though. We also saw two porcupines here as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to camp along Elliott Highway?

Summer is generally the best time to camp along Elliott Highway, with July offering long daylight hours and relatively mild temperatures. Be prepared for significant mosquito activity during this period - many campers find the insects quite intense and may need to remain in vehicles or tents during peak hours. Wildlife sightings are possible during summer months, including porcupines. The tree cover provides some protection from the midnight sun if you prefer darker sleeping conditions, though it doesn't get completely dark during peak summer.

What are the primitive camping options along Elliott Highway?

The Elliott Highway Pulloff Loop offers truly primitive dispersed camping with no facilities or amenities. These are simple pullout areas where you can park your vehicle and set up camp. Sites are typically surrounded by trees and native fireweed, providing some natural privacy and beauty. There are no designated camping pads, fire rings, water sources, or restroom facilities, so you must be fully self-sufficient and practice proper Leave No Trace principles when using these areas.

Where is Elliott Highway located and how do I access the campgrounds along it?

Elliott Highway is located in Alaska, running northwest from Fox (near Fairbanks). The Elliott Highway Pulloff Loop dispersed camping area can be accessed directly from the highway itself. Look for pulloff areas along the road where camping is permitted. These sites are typically unmarked but recognizable as cleared areas set back from the main road. Some spots are tucked behind trees, offering a bit more privacy and separation from highway traffic.
