Galbraith Lake Campground — Dalton Highway

Three miles off the Dalton Highway past an airstrip, Galbraith Lake Campground sits in open terrain near Galbraith Lake and creek systems in Alaska's remote interior. This Bureau of Land Management facility charges $12 per night and prohibits pets, making it a straightforward overnight option for travelers heading to or from Deadhorse.

The campground features twelve numbered sites spread across the landscape, with varying distances from the single restroom facility. Sites 6, 7, 9, and 11 require the longest walk to facilities, while site 12 sits closest to both the restroom and exit route. "Site 12 was the best, personally (easy out, close enough to restroom)," notes one camper who tested multiple locations. The rough access road requires slow driving but accommodates RVs up to 37 feet.

Campers report frequent wildlife sightings and hiking opportunities that can reach into Gates of the Arctic National Park boundaries. Basic amenities include vault toilets, a dump station, and trash service, with campfires permitted. The terrain offers open sightlines and fishing access to nearby water features. For those exploring campgrounds around BLM Land — Central Yukon Field Office, this represents one of the more developed options along this remote stretch of highway.

Campers regularly cited stunning views and excellent wildlife sightings in this remote northern location. The single restroom serves all sites with varying distances, but most found the primitive setting worthwhile for the scenery.

Beautiful Camping Experience - Outside of Gates of the Arctic NP

On the way up to Deadhorse, we stopped at Galbraith to tent camp. You have to go passed the airstrip to get to the camp— probably about 3 miles from the turn off from Dalton. There are some great sites, unfortunately only 1 restroom, so if you pick camps 6, 7, 9, or 11 you will be the furthest from the bathroom. As for site 10, if you trek through the foliage, you can make it. Site 12 was the best, personally (easy out, close enough to restroom). We also stayed at site 6 which was pretty decent. Beautiful hiking opportunities. You could fairly easily hike into Gates of the Arctic Natl Park.

Camping in the middle of nowhere

Drove up the Dalton Highway with a 37 foot 5th wheel. We camped here for two nights. Drive slow you will be ok. It was beautiful.

Great views and free

We came just after a snow and the views were amazing and the animal sightings many. A little primitive but really a welcome surprise up so far north.
