Copper River Campground β€” Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Anglers and river enthusiasts will find direct access to the Copper River at this National Park Service campground within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. The site sits on riverbed terrain where campers can watch boats navigate the historic waters and observe fish wheels in operation along the old Copper River North Western Railroad bed.

The campground operates on a fee system with day parking at $10 and overnight camping at $20, collected through pay stations throughout the area. Visitors can expect to encounter eagles and other wildlife, though the location tends to be windy and dusty. Tanya B. advises campers to "find a spot near the tree line" for better shelter, as trees are sparse across much of the camping area.

Road conditions require attention since this is riverbed camping where vehicle placement matters. The major bridge spanning the Copper River provides a prominent landmark, and the area attracts dipnet fishermen during salmon runs. Bears are present in the region, requiring proper food storage practices.

Facilities include fire rings, picnic tables, and firewood availability, though bathroom facilities are limited. Campers seeking additional options can explore camping near Wrangell - St Elias National Park & Preserve for alternatives throughout this vast wilderness area. The campground works well for those comfortable with primitive conditions who want river access and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Guests often highlighted the spectacular riverside setting with wildlife viewing and historic features. The lack of bathroom facilities was a notable concern for visitors planning overnight stays.

Where do you pee?

Amazing camping right on the Copper River. This is the people’s land and managed by AHTNA Native Corp and well worth the $10 for day parking or $20 for overnight. As with all river bed camping watch where you drive. Stopped here to watch the boats float the Copper River. There are pay stations everywhere but I did not see any bathrooms. So with that being said and little trees around I just held it.

My suggestion is find a spot near the tree line.
